Mr SteveF needs to stop procrastinating and do his goddamned taxes, too. All else being equal, I’d just as soon skip doing the taxes and just knife a dozen useless bureaucrats as my contribution to society.

Strictly anecdotal, but I’ve noticed that my hybrid and SSD drives seem to run cooler than the pure mechanical drives they replaced. Battery life is a little better on the SSD system, but the hybrid doesn’t seem to make a difference in power consumption running Windows 7.
Speed is definitely better on both.
WRT backup, I have a Western Digital My Cloud unit on my desk. No issues yet after two years. Can access it from desktop, laptop, Samsung Tablets and Phone.
Been outside working in the sun. 91 and sunny in the driveway. Nice cool shade with a breeze everywhere else.
Got one junky bush out (and got to use my brush hook) and got one apple tree planted.
Watched the tree guys take out some sort of dogwood looking tree on the corner of the house, and a really beat up pecan in the front yard. Also did some trimming in the oak and took out a fast growing junk tree in the back. That really opened up the late sun into the yard, and will give me another place for citrus once the stump is out. Left the pecan in decent size pieces, now I need another rack.
Gotta get the other apple in the ground but really need to catch my breath, hydrate, and eat lunch first. Tree is on the sunny side of the house, so it’s quite hot.
Added 1 bag manure and 2 bags soil to the raised bed on that side too. I’m gonna give zucchini and cukes one more try in that bed.
I am feeling better, but I’m still coughing. It’s just not debilitating at the moment. Still not as strong as I should be either, but definitely on the mend. Took longer than I thought to get the tree in the ground, but slow and steady prevents cardiac incidents…
Think I’ll heat up some more leftovers and eat some more lunch before heading back out.

Wish I were back in Hong Kong. Taxes … easy peasy.
The Inland Revenue send you a letter saying they think you made X. They were always right. Then you multiply X times .10 and write that in the I OWE YOU line. Fill out a check and your good to go. Yes, fill out a check. Hong Kong besides having a flat tax (10% when I was there) does NOT have Pay as you Earn (witholding). You get your FULL paycheck every month and it’s up to you to put $$ aside to pay the tax man at the end of the year. Most people don’t put money aside. The banks see this as a wonderfull opportunity to offer year end TAX loans. So you take out a loan to pay your taxes and pay it back (with interest) over the next 12 months. Everyone seems to like this arrangement. Hong Kong is great – except the weather whic is like Houston (HOT & HUMID) all year round except maybe Jan. when the highs fall into the 60’s and the locals dress up like it’s going to snow. Oh, and the choking pollution that blows in from southern China industrial complex. But on clear days it’s a treat. Hong Kong is the place where the essentials are EXPENSIVE, housing, food, etc. and the luxuries are cheap, Rolex, tailored clothing, electronics, pearls, jade, etc.
I sill miss the place.
That’s why people have an AED, right? The Airway Evacuation Dephlegmer will take care of that cough in no time.

IIRC, the hybrid drive is 5400 RPM with 8 GB SSD cache — the slower mechanism probably helps with heat also. The jury is still out on that beastie, however. I had planned to take the laptop to FL with us last week, but I had to get real work done for a Compilers class so the SSD machine went instead.
I guess you didn’t need space heaters with the Raptors running. Just put a server in every room.

Had my two VA appointments this afternoon; one was just taking blood from me again; I thought I was done with that 42 years ago, hahaha. The other one had me pretty much bare-ass nekkid and being examined thoroughly by two cute young women, one the PA and the other the doc. They couldn’t keep their hands off me and I had to keep whispering sotto voce “Down, boy, down!” But all systems are go and the only issue I have is the continuing chronic back stuff, which I’m working on anyway.
And here is some fun; we have a professor in Toronto who discusses with Gavin McCinnes (how’s it goin’, eh?) the state of the campus these days on his and a lot of others, too many, actually. The radical nutbags are on the march and taking no prisoners. The prof is very articulate and trashes these assholes left and right. I am stealing two of his phrases: “Oedipal coddling,” and “ideological possession,” i.e., possession in the sense of being possessed by demons.

Well, I finished getting the second apple tree in the ground. Ground which is supposed to be loamy sand according to the deed, but is in fact clay reinforced with a thick web of roots.
While chopping down thru said roots, I discovered that pvc sprinkler pipe sounds, and cuts, exactly like roots. I had everything I needed to fix (replace) 18″ of pipe, but I couldn’t get it dry. So off to the store for some sharkbite fittings. They push on, and can go on wet.
Had to work much faster than I would have due to blocking the neighbor’s driveway, after the repair setback, so I’m pretty beat.
Tomorrow I’ll get the cukes and zukes in the ground, get a couple beds dressed, and when the pickup is finally empty, pick up what I need for some more woodpile racking. That pecan will make for some fine burning and probably some good smoke chips in a year or so.
Oh, and I’ll get whatever the juice for rotting out stumps is…
All this while recovering from flu and bad back, AND getting ready for the local hamfest on Saturday. I’ve got a ton of stuff to sell, and am hoping for at least a $500-700 day at the swapmeet. If I bring some of the radios I’m hoarding, and if the o-scopes sell, I could double that which would make for a very pleasant day standing around chatting with hams.

I’ll be doing a couple of big loads of laundry in the laundromat dryers tomorrow, mostly wife’s stuff; you’d think three or four big families lived here. Sometimes works out well because I can sit and read and they play an oldies station over the speakers and occasionally I get to chat with some of the lower-class locals, in meatspace. See and hear what they’re talking about. Or I can run off and do some other errand and come back within the hour; it’s near the big “city” downtown.
After that, a recon to a mass up the road in Swanton. Wednesday night another such recon in the next town down, Georgia. And Thursday PM the Latin mass down at the co-cathedral in Burlap. Wife wants to start going back regular again but she don’t much care for the Latin mass and insists, rightfully, that the other modern mass is legit; sometimes I’m not so sure. Two more mass recons over the weekend here in Snarl-binz. (that’s how locals pronounce it). And the towns of Swanton and Milton are pronounced without the ‘t.’
Prepping? When the next check/s roll in; cash put aside; and this month, a major haul of food. So I gotta assemble more shelving in the cellar. Next month: cash again, and ammo. Focusing on 9mm, 10mm, and 5.56.

Clean bill of health today so life is good.

She’s boning up for it all week. No family can make it to the taping, but one of her work colleagues who lives in San Diego will be there with her, so that’s good.

That’s how Switzerland does it as well. It’s a great system, because people feel the pain when they pay their taxes. This gives people a serious motivation to see taxes kept low.
Of course, the leftist politicians who want MOAR government are always trying to find other ways to increase government income. The current favorite is increasing VAT, which is completely invisible to the end consumer (except for increase prices in the stores). It looks like VAT is about to go up another 0.6%.
Switzerland has half the solution in place: The government isn’t allowed to run a deficit. What’s missing is the other half: A hard cap on total government income and/or expenditures, to prevent taxes from going up and up and up.
There is one thing I dislike about Swiss politics, though. That is the idea that you can legislate politeness. There are topics that are literally illegal to discuss. Denying the Holocaust is the most famous example. Insulting foreign heads of state. Racism in general. Various others. The leftists are now working to extend this generally to “hate speech”, to include whatever specific topics (homophobia, sexism, etc.) that they want.
I’m a member of the local Pirate Party, because it’s the only party to have a clue on technical issues, and I figure they deserve the support. However, the current party leaders are mostly naive leftists in other respects. I’d like to see them concentrate on what the PP is supposed to represent: sensible IP laws, privacy, encryption, etc.. But they want to stake out positions on basic income, hate speech, etc. that are just intolerable. Makes for interesting discussions on the forums, which helps me polish my written German (which may actually be the bigger motivation).
