Cool, mid 70sF to start but warming to over 100F by afternoon. That’s my guess anyway. Yesterday was sunny and hot. Really a pretty nice day if the humidity wasn’t so high. As it was, you could hurt yourself outside in the sun. Nice at night though.
Did my dad taxi in the morning, with a pickup included. Got some stuff for the household, the BOL, and to sell at my non-prepping hobby show in the Fall. Then I was kinda stuck close to home all afternoon with more taxi duties. I did get a few housekeeping and office things done.
But today, I’ll be running around doing pickups in various parts of town. At least gas is back down to $3.37. Every little bit helps.
I’m gathering supplies for fixes and improvements at home and the BOL, and I’m adding to the stacks. Which is something you should think about doing… hurricane season is coming.

How is the Iran deal being sold in the US? From here, it looks like complete capitulation by the USA: Iran gets to control the Strait of Hormuz, gets a huge reparations fund, and “will negotiate” on the nuclear topics. I.e., Iran lost nothing but some hardware, gains a lot of money, and has shown that – despite tactical losses – it can outlast and strategically defeat the US military.
How the heck is this being sold in the US? I’m sure the administration is claiming some sort of victory…
On other topics, bit of a misadventure today. I was out welding a fence, when the wife turned on the sprinkler. Onto the extension cable roll, which shorted and tripped a breaker.
Well, that’s what breakers are for, only: The one that tripped is not the one labelled “workshop”, but rather the one labelled “pantry light”. And, yes, the pantry light also went out.
Looks like a big oops in the electrical wiring. We are (I think) still within the house’s guarantee period, so I wrote up the info, took some pics, and sent it off to the building company.
I have no idea. Between family troubles*, dealing with the effects of yesterday’s storm, and working extra to earn money to make up for all the time away from the computer recently, I’ve been too busy to pay attention.
* Several family members have taken a turn for the worse and need help with things. I’d tell them that I’m busy so kindly just drop dead for a while, but that would be in poor taste under the circumstances.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a building which did not have both miswired runs and mislabeled breakers. I’m not a trained and licensed electrician but I know that a breaker labeled Dining Room should not also controlling half of the kitchen counter outlets. Now, I don’t want to suggest that most of the contractors putting up houses in the US are unlicensed, incompetent, hung over, or thinking about humping their sisters, but I have to judge by the evidence.
It is so regular that my wife will do something that either screws up what I’m working on, damages something, or puts me at great risk of death or injury, that I generally don’t do such projects if she’s home, or else turn off the sprinkler water, turn off a breaker and lock the door to that room, or similar. I’m almost positive that it’s not deliberate. She’s just so self-centered and oblivious that it doesn’t occur to her that there are considerations other than what she has in mind at the moment.
What is their food source inside the building? Moisture?

If they’re in your keyboard, I’d suggest getting a pro involved and have a Come To Jesus meeting with everyone working in the building about awareness and minor housekeeping chores which need to be done daily.

My wife’s office in Florida always smelled like garbage and “felt” dirty due to a combination of Amish and Mennonite support staff playing games with each other about the pecking order between the two racial groups to the point that the breakroom garbage was always overflowing whenever I walked back there.

Tell me that you have incompetent people in Operations or management without using the word “incompetent”. On the plus side, I was paid by the hour for the full process, not just the two minutes it took me to make the fix.

One of those holidays was Veterans Day. Half a dozen of the people on the contract were veterans. When MLK days was instated it was mandatory that we take that day off and lose Veterans Day. Even though I work for a BigCorp, the holiday, and leave policy in general, is pretty good. We can defer any holiday to use later. It must be used by the end of the year. I’m also deferring July 4, which is observed on July 3 this year, to use later.
Very seldom do I take a fixed-price contract or piecework gig. There’s always – always! – something left out of the description. I previously tried just raising the price to allow for the possibility, by which I mean near certainty, that the task would take longer than expected because of surprises. The client never wanted to pay the increased rate. Fine. They can look for someone else who will (attempt to) do the work at a price they want to pay and I can usually find other paying work.

In the era after Romex replaced knob-and-tube, but before GFCI, I was told this was intentional. You could keep the number of circuits down, and spread the load across rooms. Back in those days, power usage was unlikely to max out in two rooms at the same time. So adjacent bedrooms would have 3 circuits for 2 rooms, and maybe some of the outlets and lights would be shared with circuits for living rooms and hallways and lights. If you had need for power in a bedroom, you’d split your devices across 2 walls, and likely have your devices split on 2 circuits.
That was the era when a house had maybe one TV and no computers.
Whether planned or not, I ran into this in several houses I renovated.
Fair enough, but this house is 16 years old. GFCI breakers and outlets all over the place. The washing machine outlet in the basement has GFCI, which is reasonable, but if it trips, the (one) outlet in the garage also stops working. Also, that outlet is too far away from the water inlets and outlets for the washing machine to use it. Amateur work from foundation to roof.

Ok, now I’ll rant about GFCI.
In this part of Texas, in the era this house was built, GFCI was expensive.
The code required all bathrooms, kitchens, exterior, and garage outlets had to be protected by GFCI. Which is not unreasonable.
But the outlets were expensive, as I noted above. So the contractors figured out you can save money by daisy-chaining the outlets.
Instead of 2 circuits for the kitchen, have 5 outlets, but one circuit, and all controlled by a single GFCI. So you can’t run the toaster oven, microwave , stand mixer and the coffeemaker at the same time.
The two bathrooms share a wall, so one GFCI covers both bathrooms. It also controls the single outlet in the garage. It also controls the two exterior outlets. Which is not enough juice to run the deep freeze and the beer fridge.
Today, GFCI outlets are cheaper, and I would have 8 of them: 2 kitchen, 2 exterior, 2 bathroom, 2 garage. All on separate 20 amp breakers. The way this house was built, it’s two.
The “surprise” is that ~⅔ are working (although it doesn’t say how much or where, or what their median income is).
No mention of inflation at all, or useless degrees, or the wage depressing and rent increasing effect of massive immigration.

I don’t like to put him off, but in this case, a total failure is easier to diagnose than an intermittent one. I may leave from there to The Woodlands for a pickup on my way to the BOL. If it’s raining, I won’t continue on to the BOL though.
Currently the fronts and the rain are passing by on either side of us with only flashes and rumbles and the occasional drop. If it rains at the BOL there won’t be any reason for me to head up as I won’t be able to mow and that task will be pushed into next week.
