Cool. Damp bordering on wet. And then warming to a nice day. That was yesterday, and hopefully today. I love Fall. We don’t get much of the changing foliage, but we do get some. And we get a bit of jacket and sweater weather, but not enough for someone raised in the Midwest. Fortunately, we also don’t get several feet of snow, or icy drizzle, or a month of grey dirty days.
Didn’t get much done yesterday, as my wife was in painting mode in the laundry area. That kept me mostly out of there and off that project. I did some auction stuff instead. It turned into a mostly ‘off’ day.
Today will be different. I should be able to wrap up the new pantry project. I’ll put the laundry room back together and progress as far as I can anyway. I’ve got one pickup close by, and I’ll do some auction stuff in the morning too. But I should be able to get some more work done around the house.
Should. I’m beginning to think about adding some more bulk buckets to the stacks too. What’s cheap now might be dear later. Well, relatively cheap… it’s still much more than it was a couple of years ago and there is less selection. War leads to a number of things, shortages and displaced people being among the most prevalent. One I can do something about. The other, all I can do is try to prevent it from being me, and prepare to offer what help I can.
Stacks will help.

(why are the king’s horses involved?)
Maybe you’re just a wimp?
More helpfully, it’s because you’re not expecting the contact, so your brain magnifies the sensation. If someone were plinking acorns at you and you saw him doing it, you’d find it annoying but not painful.
“All the king’s horses and all the king’s men” refers to the royal guard regiments, mounted and foot.
“Today will be different
For better or worse.
Carpe diem.
The NTP protocol resolves the paradox.
I have *the* book somewhere around here. IIRC, the text was over $100.
One of my long term projects is a Stratum 1 time server on my home network. I have all of the pieces but very little … time!
Does NYC require the Mayor to be a US Citizen?
The Constitution does not require the Speaker of the House to be an elected member of the House.
Does New York City care?
Yeah, Communist. Trump tho.
We gonna git all them Devils, starting with their Orange King.
The property taxes are arguably more important than paying the IRS. Make sure the money is there.
The ISDs sold their souls to the bond ghouls to buy nonsense. Now the Legislature has to keep the plates spinning with the surplus every two years.
61F and saturated. Water from the tap was chilly this morning. That is the sure sign of Summer’s end in Houston.

Prices for NTP timeservers are all over the place on ebay.

Not hearing much stirring from the females yet this am. I better poke the lions again.

Winter has arrived here. 6 degrees, northwest wind, pouring rain and, just now, hail. Brr. I have to go out in it later and pack the car. Brr.
Hmmm, CAT5 headed for Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Shouldn’t be an issue for use though.

Most of the GPS-based servers break after a while in my experience. Spending big money doesn’t matter.
Yep. We just purchased a new one. They just work, until they don’t.
The problem comes when the Stratum 1 source loses its mind. Most Hot Skillz “Dev Ops” people don’t understand what that looks like or how to prevent the condition from developing having only used Chronyd as their server.
Windstorms here in the high desert for the next few days.
Until now it has been one of the most pleasant Fall’s I can recall around here.
No roof work, which is fine with me.
And so it begins…
I received an email from TVA to register for their Rest or Rise sweepstakes, with a chance to win some trinkets. All you have to do is fill out a form and register your smart thermostat.
Yeah, no thanks.
Well, we needed some rain…
My secondary location received 19″ of rain last night, GFs house got 18″, my primary 16″. My properties are fine and stayed dry, although the secondary was basically surrounded by a moat (topographical planning for the win.)
Lots of sinkholes on important roads, boil orders, etc… Central FL is going to be a mess for a while. It will be interesting to see where big snakes and gators appear after being relocated by temporary rivers.
The weather change that accompanied the storm is looking like our low temps might drop below 60 later this week, too. I’m still getting used to feeling cold with our current lows in the upper sixties (pretty chilly for us.) Winter is coming.
Nick, many thanks, especially for the reassurance that “done is good”. Time is in short supply today, so only this quick reply for the nonce. The posts on the Denon don’t seem to be quite the same as the ones you indicated. There is no central aperture for a banana plug, for instance. I can’t use banana plugs on the AVR for lack of space behind it, but I did put them on all the speakers for ease of disconnecting them, if necessary for cleaning the floor, etc.
I put the Hi-Fi amp and the connected devices (TV, satellite receiver, CD player, Blu-Ray player, subwoofer) all on their own extension 8-socket bar, and I have the bar connected to the mains supply via a normal 13A plug and socket. If I remove the plug, the air gap is however far I move the plug from the socket, so I think it will be fine.
We had lightning nearby today, so I applied the protocol and pulled the plug. I will leave it pulled when the BOL is not occupied, though that does go against my longstanding policy of never disconnecting electronics from the mains, as they really don’t like heating and cooling cycles, especially since lead-free solder came into general use on the circuit boards.
@denis, IDK that denon used other connectors but you continentals do things ‘differently’ (SCART connector, I”m looking at you)…
In any case, the electrical connections are probably fine and likely to stay that way for a long time. Experiment with speaker placement and room tuning before worrying about any connector or cable issues.
I’m trying to get our “library” set up for vinyl listening now that it’s not the kid cage “toy room”. That means getting one of the many turntables/amp/speaker choices nailed down and figuring out how to place gear in the room. Also, 20 linear feet of vinyl needs a storage system, not just a shelf.

Mamdami is a muslim. His naturalization should be reversed and he should be deported.
There is a world war coming between the muslims and the Christians, somewhere between 20 years to a 100 years away. The USA will be the last bastion of Christianity as the muslims murder non-muslims around the world. Europe and the UK will fall soon (soon being a decade or two) to the Caliphate.

I‘m back from my colonoscopy. That Propofol is great. I was out in 10 seconds. Woke up and it was all over.
The doc said I’m fine for a 70-year old. I had four micro-polyps removed for biopsy. A small divot of diverticulitis. A couple of small hemorroids. I should get another colonoscopy in three years.
“Democrats Are on the Clock as Schumer Shutdown Approaches Key Deadline”
https://thelibertydaily.com/democrats-are-clock-as-schumer-shutdown-approaches-key/
“(Discern Report)—As the Schumer-led government shutdown drags into its fourth grueling week, Democrats find themselves racing against the clock with a critical Obamacare deadline looming large. With millions of Americans thinking about healthcare costs, the political theater in Washington is intensifying, but Republicans are calling out what they see as blatant Democratic gamesmanship to weaponize the crisis for electoral gain.”
“The heart of the standoff revolves around the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, beefed up during the Covid-19 plandemic and now set to expire at the end of 2025. Open enrollment for Obamacare kicks off on November 1, 2025—just days away—and Democrats are demanding an extension as a non-negotiable in any deal to reopen the government. Without it, they warn, premiums, co-pays, and deductibles could explode.”
GOP, you had better keep on the line on these unaffordable subsidies.
I was out in less time. I felt a funny taste in my mouth, mentioned it, told it was the injection. The next I remember is waking up and a nurse telling me it was OK to fart. (What a rush, literally and figuratively) Not groggy at all. Unlike my knee surgery where I was a zombie for a couple of hours after taking an hour to wake up. Then sleeping for most of the rest of the day. In my exam they found a couple of pre-cancerous polyps that were removed. I needed to return in three years.
“Mutineer’s Moon (Dahak Series)” by David Weber
https://www.amazon.com/Mutineers-Moon-Dahak-David-Weber/dp/0671720856?tag=ttgnet-20/
Book number one of a three book space opera science fiction series. I reread the well printed and bound MMPB published by Baen in 1993 that was reprinted for eighth time in 2004 (I have several copies). This is my favorite SF book and series of all time as I have reread it eight or twelve times now. I am rereading the second book in the series now which sadly, has gone out of print as a standalone book.
https://www.amazon.com/Armageddon-Inheritance-David-Weber/dp/0671721976?tag=ttgnet-20/
I do not know why this is my favorite SF book and series of all time. I think that I like the standup position of the chief protagonist, Colin the First. Or that there are so many different species of intelligent space races in the series. Or that the book is written so tightly, especially when compared to Weber’s later works. Or that an self aware artificial intelligence shares the main protagonist job in the book, much like Heinlein’s “The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress”.
I keep on hoping that David Weber will write more books in the Dahak series but, I doubt it. He did write the Safehold series which is along the same lines as this book, overpowering space aliens and self aware artificial intelligences. BTW, there is an ending to the Safehold, Honorverse, and Dahak series that David Weber wrote as joke:

The entire series is also available in an omnibus book, “Empire From The Ashes” in either kindle or trade paperback. I also own this book in trade paperback.
https://www.amazon.com/Empire-Ashes-David-Weber/dp/141650933X?tag=ttgnet-20/
Here is my 2006 review of the book:
“I love this book. Of my 5,000+ SciFi books, it is my favorite. True, it is a little bit raw. But, it tells a SOLID story and leaves you wanting more more more at the end. That is the sign of a great book. A sentient ship the size of the moon and the unique story of the “space aliens” makes for a totally cool story. BTW, I am reading it for the 5th or 6th time (who keeps count ?). Weber owes a couple of authors for his story: Heinlein’s “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” and the Perry Rhodan series. There are two sequels to this book, also 5 stars. I am valiantly waiting for the fourth …”
My rating: 6 out of 5 stars (yes 6 stars, get over it !)
Amazon rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars (589 reviews)

“Truckers push back on driver-shortage ‘myth’ that has led to flood of foreigners in long-haul industry”
https://www.theblaze.com/news/truckers-push-back-on-driver-shortage-myth-that-has-led-to-flood-of-foreigners-in-long-haul-industry
“Truck driving was once a career path that epitomized the American dream, offering high pay and lifelong job security. Yet in recent years, the industry has become trapped in a cycle of high turnover, continually refilling positions with inexperienced drivers, prompting concerns about road safety and national security.”
“Multiple truckers told Blaze News that the industry’s challenges stem from the myth that it is battling a truck-driver shortage. This narrative has been used to justify heavy government intervention, including taxpayer-funded programs that cover training and recruiting costs, significantly reducing the financial burdens previously borne by carriers or aspiring drivers.”
“Those who reject the truck-driver-shortage claim argue that this taxpayer-subsidized setup effectively incentivizes labor dumping that masks high turnover caused by dismal wages and poor working conditions.”
I have been wondering about this for quite a while. There are several industries in the USA that refuse to pay a living wage and will hire illegals to get things done while throwing safety and good working conditions out the door.

“Exclusive-Amazon targets as many as 30,000 corporate job cuts, sources say”
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/exclusive-amazon-targets-many-30-184252368.html
“SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Amazon is planning to cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs beginning on Tuesday, as the company pares expenses and compensates for overhiring during the peak demand of the pandemic, according to three people familiar with the matter.”
“The figure represents a small percentage of Amazon’s 1.55 million total employees, but nearly 10% of its roughly 350,000 corporate employees. This would mark Amazon’s largest job cut since late 2022, when it started to eliminate around 27,000 positions.”
And now Amazon is laying off people.

That is the stuff that killed Michael Jackson. He used it to go to sleep every night.
Perhaps it was his guilty conscious keeping him awake.

I never met him, but I worked with many people that toured with MJ for years. MJ was a money machine.

I’ve got the pantry cabinets installed, and the slide out vertical organizer. Put two doors on, but ran out of hinges. I didn’t realize that the big doors needed 3 hinges each.
I haven’t assembled any of the drawers yet. I think I’ll let W express her opinion before committing to that much additional work.
IKEAs kitchen cabinets are solid, especially once they are attached to the wall.
The grey doors I picked don’t work well with the blue grey she painted the room though.
n
The hinge mounting system is very easy and the doors lined up exactly. Much improved over 15 years ago, and pretty much any cabinet hinge system I’ve ever used.

“Tesla ‘may lose’ Elon Musk if shareholders don’t approve $1 trillion pay package, chairperson warns”
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-may-lose-elon-musk-if-shareholders-dont-approve-1-trillion-pay-package-chairperson-warns-143908548.html?guccounter=1
“Once again, Tesla (TSLA) chair Robyn Denholm pleaded with shareholders to approve CEO Elon Musk’s unprecedented compensation package, one that could cost the company $1 trillion, with the threat of Musk leaving the company.”
Musk won’t leave Tesla but he could effectively never show up. That would be very bad for Tesla.
Don’t worry. It’ll be fine. An aircraft that can think, fly and fight on its own isn’t going to go Skynet and kill us all.
Well… I put together one drawer to see how things were going to work. And they don’t.
Not like I thought anyway, so I have to figure something else out.

Jackson was in rehearsal for a new tour and probably needed something to get enough sleep.

“How This SCOTUS Term Could Boost Republican Efforts Before Midterms”
https://thelibertydaily.com/how-this-scotus-term-could-boost-republican-efforts/
“(DCNF)—The Supreme Court is handling several major cases that could shake up the 2026 midterms, potentially giving Republicans a competitive edge.”
“Decisions in three election-related cases are expected by the end of the Supreme Court’s term in June and may reshape the 2026 election landscape.”
“Questions at play include race-based redistricting in Louisiana v. Callais, limits on party’s coordinated spending with candidates in National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) v. Federal Election Commission (FEC) and when candidates have standing to challenge state election rules in Bost v. Illinois State Board of Elections.”
The Louisiana case is interesting. There is nothing in the USC about using anything but population to determine voting districts. The concept of racial “minority representation” is only possible when the races are not uniformly distributed geographically. But lack of uniformity is not sufficient to enable drawing districts that do not violate other long-held principles, such as keeping smaller political divisions intact. And if race is an acceptable factor, then which race, and what about religion, ethnicity, and even age? When presented with more than one possible solution, how is the choice made, and who makes it? Districting is a political act, not a judicial one–the judiciary has no constitutional role but they have created one for themselves.
Musk won’t leave Tesla but he could effectively never show up. That would be very bad for Tesla.
Of course, Musk could start a new robotics company, Musk Robotics, Inc.
BTW, this is the part of AI that is going to work. Unlike the rest of AI that is not working very well at all.
Pournelle said it best, teaching a computer to do the things that the stupidest human being on the planet can do easily is difficult, very difficult. He knew after using a IBM 360 to test space suits in a vacuum chamber for NASA / Boeing. Apparently every thing that could go wrong did go wrong and then some.
