Cool, but not crazy cool. And it will get warmer later. Yesterday had some clouds, which kept the sun from broiling me, but it still was pretty warm in the afternoon. Fall is definitely here though. And welcome.
Did some auction stuff in the morning yesterday, then auction pickups in the afternoon. Mailed the ebay item I sold. Took 45 minutes as I didn’t drop it off when passing a box or station, and I forgot until after I got home so I had to go back out to drop it at the ‘good’ station. Lot of messing around for a tiny sale. I hope the guy really needed it.
Today I will be going to the BOL, but not first thing. I don’t want to wait too long, but I have to load up the truck and I want to sleep in a bit. There might be family stuff to attend to as well. D2 has plans for a school thing, which my wife is covering, but IDK if D1 needs anything from me. And I might have to meet with a craigslist buyer to sell something before I head out. Conveniently, the item is at the shop, along with most of what I am taking up this weekend.
Of course that isn’t due to ‘luck’. I live the prepping lifestyle.
Maybe I live it a little TOO much, but I don’t think so. I know I could be doing more, or doing what I do with more seriousness and commitment. Could be less too. It’s a habit and a lifestyle and a hobby. Cool, huh?
Prep something. Stack something.

It’s Broderick Crawford Day!
Whirly bird!
The Salt LIck in Driftwood still has a weird separation of alcohol sales from the main restaurant. I know that Hays County was dry when we first went in 2002, but I’m not sure why the strange compartmentalization continues today.
Trattoria Lisinia around the corner sells the usual beer and wine options at the table. However, Lisina is not a booze-oriented place like Carabba’s, which the owner co-founded and sold.
Most Central Texas BBQ places are BYOB. Maybe it is a tradition.
The newly-rebuilt “World’s Largest” Buc-ee’s in Luling sits at the gateway to Ground Zero of Central Texas BBQ with four major places within 10 minutes of the store, located near where US 183 crosses I-10.
New Braufels, the “World’s Largest” prior to Sevierville, supplies the river tubing crowd with “mixins”.. I’ve seen the fountain dispensers drained dry on Fourth of July weekends in the recent past.
Well, it was, until you shorted them a “N”.

200,000 More SIM Cards Found Linked to Secret Telecom Network in NYC

comment from AosHQ this morning:
That’s the only reference to the origin of the Secret Service involvement, and Ace provides no source.
A commented earlier, it seems unlikely that a server with 10,000 SIM cards could come online and not be easily visible to someone looking at network traffic.

Dirty Hospitals Are to Blame for Superbug Deaths

The text editor here is weird with my cr*p laptop lately.
4 GB RAM. Core2 branded as “Pentium”. Circa 2016 from my current employer.
I’ll continue to carry the laptop on the road and use it around the house until the experience gets too painful.
When we left Nashville on Sunday, TSA policy du jour was to take laptops out of the bags.
Old news.
In a grid down situation, the hospitals will become death traps the moment the $20/hr labor manning the mops disappear. Currenty, they only manage to maintain status quo..
My wife’s office in Florida always smelled like garbage because the $20/hr labor answering the phones turned emptying the lunchroom can which the staff shared into a race issue. “That ain’t my job.”
For the record, before anyone makes up a name, Shenique.
Emptying the non-biohazard can was actually one of their responsibilities, but what ya gonna do about it White people?
I subsidized the paychecks and *Christmas bonus* which came directly from my wife’s compensation.
Yeah, that isn’t happening again.
74F and sunny. Nice day and a far cry from 90F at 9am…

Up and fed. D2 is off on her thing. D1 is lounging in bed, as teens are wont to do.
I think I’ll finish this coffee, check on my auctions and the internet, and maybe do some mortar work on the walk before getting ready to head out (I can’t leave the bags where they are, and I don’t want to move them twice. 60# bags of mix are heavier than they used to be).

My wife’s old office always smelled like a superfund site because of the disinfectant used by the drug testing lab on the first floor. That sh!te would peel paint.

I’m of 2 minds about the unfortunate death of the synagogue gunshot victim.
On the first hand, there was a man with a knife attacking innocents, and he needed put down, pronto. Shooting him with what you had available was the right call. In the heat of the moment, I can understand taking the shot while losing sight of the backstop.
Added to that, first reports are that it was a through-and-through, so the cop hit his target. It was not a miss. If true, it was an over-penetration issue. Were they using ball ammo instead of hollowpoints? No Geneva convention issues apply to law enforcement.
OTOH, “Great” Britain. Under their rules, the cop will be charged with murder, just the same as if he had chosen a random citizen to shoot. Britain is lost.
It doesn’t matter anyway. In 10 years, Buckingham palace will be a mosque and all the jews will be enslaved or killed.
I had a joyful Friday. A GFCI went out in he kitchen. No big deal, I’ll just go get one. I went into the garage to pop the circuit breaker. I was raising the garage door for more light and it goes off the rails on one side and it completely jammed. One of the rollers even fell out it was so off. I searched for anybody near me and “Shawn” shows up with a ton of great Yelp reviews. And, wow, he says he can be there in an hour. He shows, the guy is 60, and is the Garage-Door-Whisperer. He had the door fixed, replaced a hinge, retentioned the springs, pulley, and tightened the drive cable in 30 minutes. I’m keeping him.
Now I go get the GFCI and start replacement. I’m putting in the ground and it breaks off where it is crimped to the next ground. Not much left in the box and I have no crimper or ferrules to use. Back to Home Depot just before it closes and get the stuff. It was tight, but I got the ground wound and crimped. Power back on.
TSA is a guessing game. When we went on the Cruise in May of this year, laptops could remain in the bags on the way to Canada. Coming back from Canada, nope, laptops out.
Then the trip to Las Vegas in July. Laptops in the bag both directions. Although the fake knee did cause a body wonding.
Germany in August, leaving, laptops out of the bags and getting chewed out for leaving the laptop in the bag. Returning from Europe, laptop in the bag, with the reasoning Germany has better scanners. The fake knee did cause me to get fondled. Given a choice I would rather be fondled by a female but some of those agents, no thanks.
WAGOS, the real stuff, not the crap made by Ideal. When the wires are short the WAGOS will get the job done. Easier than wire nuts.
Yeah, my first consideration, but some advice from the inner tubes indicated a lot of areas where WAGO doesn’t meet code for grounds. I’m not sure in Knee-Vahda, so I went with the crimpies.
Federal Agents Rammed, Boxed In by 10 Vehicles Near Chicago

Part of the federal response should be instant suspension of all federal aid to the Chicago PD and city government, with full review of any other disbursements.
Mississippi has leapfrogged nearly 40 states in 4th grade reading
https://x.com/Dale_Chu/status/1971201700825592086
From 46th in 2017 to 7th in 2024.
If that is indicative of overall improvement in student performance, the benefits are incalculable, and will probably exceed all the government assistance programs available as those students get older.
What makes me think that the teacher’s unions have been fighting the changes tooth and nail?
Insurrection, plain and simple. Police commanders, city council, mayor, governor, AG should all be arrested and federally charged.
I have an oak dining room table. If you remove both leaves, it’s a round table. You’ve seen them or similar with the somewhat clunky looking pedestal base.
His parents bought it from a little furniture store in “blank”. I know how to get there from Comanche. Head south towards Priddy and make a left turn off of 16. It doesn’t show on Google Maps. She died in 2002 and he a couple of years later. I think they had the dining set about 15 years. When he died one of his grandsons got the set. Dude is buying a buying house and has a card table for a dining room table. A few years go by and the boy has his mom and her husband living with him. Not my beeswax. Mom has a very nice pecan dining room set (that’s a fun story) and she wants to use it. So the oak table was stashed in a spare room for a couple of years.
He got on a cleaning kick and asked his dad if he wanted the set. Since our table was a thing I bought from Sears way back in 1978, sure! It was a nice table. But someone offers an upgrade?
I wiped the new set down down and waxed it. Johnson paste wax. That must have been 11 years ago. My mom was living here and she didn’t like the new chairs. So she used one of the old chairs. Ok mom, just eat your food and stop feeding Penny. “I don’t feed her!” Sure mom, Penny is staring at you from pure love, right? “Harrumph!”
Well things get grubby where folks sit, place mats or no. Just sitting with arms on the table. I finally cleared the table yesterday. It’s a too convenient flat surface. I intend to break that habit. Stop laughing.
I cleaned the table today. Misted it with water. That didn’t touch the grubby spots. Mixed up some Murphy’s oil soap. That worked. Rinsed with more misted water and let it dry for a couple hours. Out came the Johnson’s paste wax. While that was drying I gave the chairs a good dusting. Then I buffed the table. Hey, did you know that if you bother to read the directions it says to work with the grain? So I waxed it again. With the grain to remove the swirls.
It looks great. Needs a little extra buffing in spots as the light in the room changes. And I suppose, as the wax sets. Shines better than a high gloss polyurethane basketball court.
Lot’s of fun memories while waxing. Going to Comanche for Thanksgiving and Christmas and other times just for a visit. So much laughing! That generation is all gone 20 years now.
Not a bad day. Not sad. Wistful maybe. Kind of lonely perhaps but not really. Shrug. It’s what it is.
I took my mother to the ER this morning as her right arm was very swollen. They checked her in and are giving her iv antibiotics and steroids. She is allergic to penicillan and the good antibiotics.

W1 and I had a party this evening to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. Merry, yes, but also wistful somehow, on account of the loved ones who are no longer physically present with us after the 25 years.
Mr Lynn, I hope your mother will be better quickly.
I just had a txt from something named “Billy”. Addressed me by name. It missed my message until just now but is too busy to call right now, but would love to hear from me!
Pretty sure it’s not Billy Elsenbaumer. We were best friends when we lived across the street from each other. When we were NINE.
I can’t think of anyone else that goes by “Billy”. Ever.
Yeah. It’s spam. A new to me form.

From 46th in 2017 to 7th in 2024.
Did they say how Mississippi acheived this awesome improvement ? Or did the rest of the nation drop precipitously ?
One conservative outlet led with the headline that Mississippi did it by doing the opposite of what the Dept. of Education said to do.
Another said phonics.
I never followed up on either. I read a lot of headlines but don’t often click through.
Ever heard of “corn dishes”? It’s a thing. Yellow and textured like corn on the cob with green leaves.
An example: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1598602576/vintage-shawnee-pottery-corn-plate
I have that plate or very similar. And I suppose the “completer set”. Butter dish, salt and pepper shakers, a serving bowl. No plates or bowls…. someone else claimed that part of the set. One of the boys got the stuff. Left it here. Didn’t ever say what to do about it.
So a couple of years later, “Why don’t you have the corn dishes in Grandmother’s china cabinet?” The cabinet came with the table I waxed today. ”Uh, because I thought you just wanted me to store the stuff? Display it? I missed that part of the conversation.”
So the table is clear. Needs a centerpiece, yes? A big flowery centerpiece is right off of the list, forget it. Ain’t dusting that stuff for a start.
I have a crocheted doily that I think my dad got from either his mother or an aunt. I don’t really know. I sorta glommed on it when I was a kid. Picked out of a trash pile during a move. Because pretty. I have two. Both are sort of antimacassar size but decorative for decorative side chairs. If that makes sense. One is on the marble end table. Lays flat. Just right so the phone and kindle don’t “clunk” when laid down. Lain down. Hmm
Thin yarn. A bit thicker than kite string. Embroidery yarn weight but not slick or fluffy.
The other is “frilly” at the eight corners and sort of matches the colors of the corn dishware.
Hey. I guess the doilies are like 70 years old. Use them or let them sit in a drawer?
Kind of like the handmade quilts in the closet. Pretty sure they were made to be used and not stashed in a closet.
Time for dog walks.
I think they teach the kids how to sound out the words. Like the way I think I learned. I don’t recall. I still say words wrong that I’ve never heard spoken.
None of the hieroglyphic nonsense of “whole word”.
Also might be a bit of “you can’t read in third grade, you are repeating third grade” encouragement happening.
Yeah, phonics.
After decades of “educators” destroying reading education with theories that don’t work, the parents are rebelling.
The classic question is: Why can’t Johnny read?
The answer is: Because Ed.D.’s have rectal-cranial inversion, can’t read or write themselves, and are also infected with chronic plagiarism.
Now they need to flush out math education.
One conservative outlet led with the headline that Mississippi did it by doing the opposite of what the Dept. of Education said to do.

Probably both.
Mom said today that I could count and read when I went to kindergarten. Mom was the best teacher. She said it freaked the teacher that I could read already.
Mr Lynn, I hope your mother will be better quickly.
Turns out Mom has a staph infection on her right arm going across to her left arm. Her self diagnosis said shingles but doc said those go up into the neck. Treatment is steroids and antibiotics, one of the myacins that she is not allergic to yet.
Mom will be in the hospital 2 to 4 or more days. 84 year old wheelchair bound lady who is oh so tired and getting more and more confused.
And I have a cataract surgery on Tuesday.
Wide awake at 9 pm. Penny has gone to bed. Buddy the Beagle is looking at me like he’s ready to go to bed.
I guess I’d best go. Might sleep worth a darn, too.
After this current song!
Doh!

Made it to the BOL.
Put a new audio book in so I could listen on the way. It looked like a young adult fantasy from the cover.
Turns out it’s Mormon fiction. I didn’t know there was such a thing, but in this a family travels thru a ‘rift’ back to 100AD and lives with some people who are in the Book of Mormon. I am not that familiar with the details of their particular beliefs, but there are a bunch of weird names so far.
It’s read by the author, who has a weird vocal thing for juvenile characters, but other than that, one disc in and it’s about the level of good fanfic, other than the subject matter being new to me.

Lot of people on the road tonight. More than usual.

I think I’ll head down to the dock for some radio/reading and a tiny little fire. It’s pleasantly cool.

Had a nice little fire on the dock. Full moon, and the lake is calm. Chilly though, 68F and 71%RH. I’ll be setting up a heater for my backside next time.
Time for a shower and bed.
