I’ve got an iPhone 14. I mostly like it but the camera/photo system is awful. (I’m current on updates.)
I take a picture and then usually can’t find it. Today I took several pictures. Went to the Photos app got a heading of Collections. Down the page are subheadings of Memories, Pinned, Albums, People & Pets, Featured Photos, Shared Albums, Recent Days, Trips, Media Types, Utilities, and Wall Paper Suggestions. No pictures!!!
Featured photos is stuff from months ago. Recent Days has one picture from today and everything else is from 2025 or earlier.
I would like to put my photos into albums. I’ve not been able create an album. The Album submenu has nothing and no suggestions on how to use it.
The Shared Albums submenu has a Start Sharing button which when selected asks me for the name of the album. I don’t have any albums to share – duh.
The utilities submenu doesn’t mention albums.
Sometimes I get pictures in the Photo app but not very often.
I tried searching for how to use this app. “How to ue iPhotos on iPhone….” says to open the app and “Once you select the Photos app, denoted by a circular fan of rainbow color feathers, you’re greeted with an immediate view of your latest images added to the app, along with a few navigation options.” That’s bullshiittt. No photos on my iPhone.

I regret that I can’t help you, because my experience with Apple stuff is that I can rarely get it to do what I want or need, and it’s not for lack of trying.
Doctor Pournelle used to say that everything with Apple either worked right off the bat or was impossible. I have found no reason to disagree with that assessment.
I can only commiserate with you, and hope someone else can advise you.

Go to the Photos App. There should be two icons at the bottom, Library and Collections. Your photos should be under Library.
Or go to Collections, then select Utilities, then Captured by Me.

That is still largely true. But what has made a difference since Pournelle made that statement is the amount of resources on the WEB. I find the same issue with Windows. I personally think it is idiotic coders and designers who never actually use the stuff they wrote. Or never had someone sit down, having never used the app, and then watch the user.
Bad idea. Some of the stuff on Android is just as confusing and convoluted as Apple. Just in a different way. I have an Android system and find some stuff easy, other stuff is like “what the he// were they thinking?”. And Android is not always the same from vendor to vendor. Apple only has themselves to blame.
What Mr. Ray said above. It is possible your iCloud account is affecting your photos. There are ways to sync your photos to iCloud and delete them from the phone.
I’ve never had a problem with the Photos app, but Apple stuff is prone to being screwy just like any e-device.

You have a to buy the iPhone Duo because you want it, not for penance. And if you truly must suffer penance, there is that matter of the iPhone gimbal that I will gladly take off your conscience and provide all the penance you need.
Barring that, do you have a name, and model, for your iPhone gimbal? I have not had much luck searching B&H and Amazon, probably not use the correct terms. I want something that keeps the phone level and has a button on the handle to activate the shutter button.
In my own case, and stated for my defense, a better word may be “oblivious”.
User Interface development – I hate “UX” as a term – is hard. When I was learning the programming trade, we had fewer choices about interactions between users and programs. Efficiency and straightforwardness were easier and our users were primarily well-trained data entry operators or accountants. We used data entry screens on monochrome character cell terminals, and my peers used CICS to accomplish the same things.
When X-windows as new, I did an early GIS system, and worked closely with our end users, and I feel I got it mostly right. But our users were a small number of Majors and above in the Air Force and could communicate clearly to us what their needs were.
Later, I developed a few very useful database intensive web pages. They were awful looking and limited, and presented exactly the right information in exactly the right formats. Again, a small community of focused users is easier to please.
Developing a common usage app for a horde of people of varying levels of intelligence and making it clear and concise and aesthetically pleasing and still functional is a daunting task. Expecting an H-1B programmer to do in his second or third or fourth language is unrealistic.
Having said all that, I wonder if I should revisit web development in the age of AI. Maybe it could handle the parts I have trouble visualizing?

Re-creating and re-using the old site will take FAR LONGER than creating a new one from scratch with automated tools.
It’s like learning CAD. Creating a part model with no particular measurements or geometry is very easy in the tutorials. Modeling an existing part is slow, tedious, and much more difficult.
My experience has been frustrating, but there is a LOT of help, and many many add ons for wordpress.
JIT learning means that you can learn and do just enough to get a result that works.

I’ve been back to using Rustdesk to access my Mac Mini in SA. Even with a VPN running on each end, it is proving to be snappy. I use Tailscale for the networking. There is a quirk many people complain about: your keyboard loses focus once you move out of the RD window. Some other app makes this happen. I think I’ve narrowed it down to the Kensington Trackball app I use. When I kill that, I get my keyboard focus back. I will play with that some more to make sure. Many others report Logitech apps will cause the keyboard focus loss.
I still use Jumpdesk (while I figure out RD) since it is the best remote app for Macs. It is a paid app and will probably switch to a subscription like everybody else. Tailscale and Rustdesk are open source. There are subscriptions for business level use.

We have people who generate those and never look at them with a critical eye.
Even as oblivious as I am to aesthetics, I’m offended by just how bland and ineffective most of the AI stuff is. Sharper lines, more contrast, less busy-ness, all those would help. That, and including the critical information without hiding it.
It’s easy to just ignore those.
Apple and Google are going to have staff psychologists involved with the user interface to maximize the dopamine hit and keep the users hooked. The developers often have little say about how the user interacts with the app.

The website is schizo. The public face is WordPress, and there’s a separate page for officers and board members behind a login screen that looks like the very best of 80’s BBSs, full of database dumps and search screens for multiple databases, all written in PHP. The databases are MySQL, and designed by an enthusiastic and talented but untrained programmer who understands nothing about DB design. For instance, all the date fields are mm/dd/yyyy strings, so there is no way to filter or sort on dates easily.
There is no change control, and there are live interfaces to PayPal and our public-facing membership new/renew/change forms.
After writing all this, I just now decided I’d rather let it die than volunteer to fix it. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Anyway. I have about 150 more. Plus boxed sets of stuff like “50 great westerns”. Which were probably late night filler on WGN and WTBS back when cable TV was new.
Plus stuff like B5 and Enterprise and Battlestar Glactica and Picard. No lack of anything to watch here.
@paul, I’ve got a pile of those compilation sets too. I decided not to bother ripping them to the server as it’s a pain in the adze. The ripping software doesn’t really do well with series or compilation sets. I blame the limited labeling of dvds and no real standard for it. Having to manually change the filenames of everything in the set is more work than I’m willing to do for what is probably barely watchable dreck anyway.
And despite how much I’ve ripped, I rarely watch it.

Little success with Albums. Created one and put two pictures in it. But I need to label the pictures if that’s possible. Can I have sub albums?
We are working through a box set of the “Battlestar Galactica” reboot with our son.
Should be a “+” thingy at the top of the screen to add an album at the top level. But no sub-albums. I did not find a way to rename a picture. Apple uses a funky name that probably only makes sense to IOS.
I’ve been watching ST:Strange New Worlds. The final season is going out with a thud. Unoriginal scripts, too many rehashes of other Trek, TV, and movies, etc. The sets and production look great.

Now the screen credits were a thing to behold. About five minutes of tiny text that were hard to read four feet from a 55″ TV.

– that is indeed how the local Film Commission counts the economic impact of filmed entertainment production… In some places they are mainly focused on hotel – night stays as that is easy to count and put a value on.
Film production is a big temporary boost to a local economy as hundreds of people need food and lodging, local rentals make money, locals are hired as temps, and even Home Depot gets a chunk of spending if any sets get built…
And since the economic activity wouldn’t exist without the production, and ceases to exist when they leave, it’s fair enough to credit some of that activity to the production. Obviously if the food truck would just be in a different location, making the same money, there is no marginal economic activity, and it shouldn’t be counted.
15K ‘impacted’ might be better, but that would have had to have been a pretty big crew and a big production.

Book number two of a three book illustrated science fiction space opera series. The books were illustrated by the science fiction author Cedar Sanderson. This is continuation of a series of two books set in the 2100s and a series of six books set in the 4000s or 5000s, ending two years prior to this series. I read the well printed and well bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback published by Raconteur Press in 2025 that I bought in 2026. And the I have the following book in the series and am hoping for more books in the series.
I love Space Opera. And I love pulp science fiction. This series is both and a great example of the merging of the two. In fact, this series reminds me very much of the Robert Heinlein juvenile books, the Piers Anthony “Bio of a Space Tyrant” series, the “Mutineer’s Moon” series by David Weber, and the Perry Rhodan series. The dialog is very frequent and the action moves along quickly.
In the far distant future, The Solarian Imperium consists of 38 star systems including Earth and the Sol system which were made uninhabitable in the War of Succession. Emperor Chase Morgan is the latest in a long line of Morgans ruling the Imperium. His family keeps power because they are genetically modified with machine interfaces in their DNA. So are all of the Nobles: the Earls, the Dukes, the Counts, and the Barons. Any machine of any importance, and especially the space ships and the military weapons, requires a human with machine interface to tell the AI what to do. And the Imperial family machine interface in their DNA is the best of all the interfaces and has special rights with all of the machines in the Imperium. And nobody knows or understands how tight the Imperial human machine interfaces are with every AI in the Imperium.
Eric Wolfram and his sister Candi (Candice) were raised by Dar (Dartanion) in his scrap yard on a frontier planet outside the Solarium Imperium. Dar rescued them at ages 7 and 10 from a drunkard who was not taking care of them. They were refugees from a space ship that was attacked by pirates where their father, mother, and older brother were killed. They took a lifeboat to the nearest planet. Both Eric and his sister have a DNA machine interface of at least the Ducal level. And Eric is growing up and running with a bad crowd Dar made him move out of the salvage yard. After a robbery gone bad, Eric joins a Privateer spaceship operating under a Letter of Marque from the King of Iraklis, a three star kingdom far away from the Solarium Imperium.

@paul, wrt ripping, I’m ripping the CDs to listen to them, and have the library in the truck since my wife cancelled my XM radio, and at the lake. I’m ripping the DVDs to get the media out of the house, and so we can have them at the lake.
I wouldn’t even have internet or a tv at the lake, but it gives the kids something to do if they are too sun burnt, or it’s raining. Family movie night can be fun too. The plan is that eventually, l’ll be watching movies on a more regular basis, kinda what you’re doing. I’ve got a lot of plans though.

Oh, I liked that one. I arrived at it in an odd way, I was following a rabbit hole about Sia, and came across the Alita cut of the music video for “Unstoppable”. Prior to that I didn’t realize people, sometimes the artist, sometimes not, did what you could call memetic videos of a popular song over different videos or compilations. Anyway, that led to the movie, which I really liked. There’s a sequel in development, apparently.
I didn’t do any yard or vehicle work today, contenting myself with removing a cardboard pile from the basement. It’s in a feed tote now, one of the cubic meter sized ones. In that vein, I acknowledge I’m a utility hoarder, i.e. I keep things I intend to use for any of a wide range of projects. The cardboard was/is intended as fuel for a pellet heater, which I don’t own yet, to be processed in the DIY pellet mill I have purchased or otherwise acquired components for, like a free trash compactor. I also keep pretty much everything else, an outgrowth of an attempt to minimize landfill impact. I started sorting various refundable, recyclable and reusable items rather than taking it to the landfill a couple of years after I bought this house. Now I have about 10 years’ worth of most of the above, which has just about outgrown the basement, but fortunately, I have time to address that now, as well as motivation. So that’s a win, I guess.

We use a more precise term, GUI, Graphical User Interface. Which, allows one to distinguish from a TUI, a textual user interface.

From punch cards on mainframes to teleprinter terminals on minicomputers to “everyone has a terminal on their desk” to desktop VAXen with Xwindows (DECWiindows) to PCs with Windows. Don’t forget WYSIWYG. State of the art in 1989 was VAX Document, where you marked up your textfile with tags (like HTML) and printing involved a translation to PostScript. WordPerfect and Word came later.
I also went through all the buzzword factories of the 70’s to current time. “Search for Excellence” to “Provably Correct Computing” to Ada to to Spiral Development to Six Sigma. Of all those, Spiral Development was the only one that made a difference. They gave it a different name since then, agile, but the idea is mostly the same.
I went from Programming to Data Processing to Information Technology to Business Intelligence.
The scariest parts were when I had small children to raise and they kept saying that we would have toolsets “Just around the corner” that would eliminate the need for programmers at all. The first couple of times, it scared me. I got jaded, the kids grew up, and then I “retired”. Now, it looks like we’ve maybe turned the corner and AI can write (at least) mediocre code, so a lot of coders are at risk.

Me too. My dad started his software business in 1968 using time sharing on a Univac 1108 while he was teaching at OU. That Univac was housed in the old Fannin Bank Building in what is the current Med Center in Houston on Holcolm at Fannin. Dad bought a Prime 450 (0.5 mip) in 1977, was freaking awesome time sharing machine for about three people. We had six terminals at first, then a dozen. Dad upgraded to a Prime 750 (1.0 mip) in 1980.
I came back in 1989. We had an Apollo DN10000, a half dozen Apollo 3500s, a VAX VMS refrigerator sized machine with an E size plotter, a half dozen DecWindows VMS machines, a Prime 2250, and two dozen 286 / 386 PCs running DOS. We were porting our database CAD software from the VAX to DecWindows which was a freaking disaster with a severe not invented here syndrome to the core team which caused a project failure. I tried an end run around the project by porting the old F77 software to the Unix database but failed. The company dropped from 85 people to 45 people this year.
By 1993, we had added more 386 PCS and were using Windows 3.11 / Lantastic to connect the PCs to the Unix boxen. We added several RS/6000, HP/UX, and a Sun Sparcstation to the crazy mix. But in 1995, the company crashed down to 10 people and we rebooted the company to a new company.

I’m kinda surprised that no one has written a graphical way to sort and categorize photos, like dealing cards into different piles… I’ve wanted that for at least 20 years.
Google tried to make it automatic with AI and Picassa, and the resulting tagging of people in pictures was too good. It scared users at the time, so they shut down the program. At least the public part of it. I expect that the IP was reused and sold to various .gov three letter agencies.

I think we saw some of it in the persecution of the J 6 people. The cops “develop probably cause” all the time to bust people without giving away the real way they identified them. I’ve heard it enough times on the scanner.
