Hot and humid. Over 100F today probably. Likely. It was over yesterday, even if we did get a bit of cloudiness later in the day. Still hot at midnight though.
I did auction stuff in the morning, then drove down to where NASA is for an auction pickup. 6 things to sell at my hobby show next month. Dumped the trash and debris out of my truck too. Then it was home for an unpleasant if tasty dinner. Everyone was waiting for me to make something but meal planning and meal preparation are two things that I guess I don’t do. It’s getting harder to hold the line.
I did stop at Goodwill looking for pants/shorts/high tech shirts/ or even shoes on my way home from dumping the trash. Found 3 columbia or PFG shirts and a couple of audio books. One was Orson Scott Card, apparently a short story in the Enderverse. I’ve never seen the written version so it will be neat to hear it first. And while I was sitting at the computer for the last couple of days I ripped about 40 CDs I got for $5. fre:ac audio encoder seems to be a LOT faster than Music Player used to be. They were mostly jazz and soul but had some good related stuff too. Physical media – own it.
Today I’ll work the list. Maybe bring a big tv home from the shop. We took the 60″ off the living room wall and took it to the BOL, so we have room for one of the new ones. I might try to fit the 86″ after all, just because I won’t have to do an upgrade later if I do. Can’t get much bigger than that, not in my living room anyway.
And I’d like to make a Costco run. Stacks can always use more…

Wednesday. Good morning.
Last day at the BOL for a few days. I spotted Bambi’s sister last night, but no sign of Bambi himself. Now I will give that patch of woods a break for a few days, and come back unexpected – hopefully!
Up early to scrape the dirt off. I have a funeral to attend. If there are people you love, tell them often. Who knows when the last opportunity will have been.
Be strong. Taking care of people is also telling them you love them, but being a doormat isn’t.
I had to go through the same exercise, and it was no fun, but it was necessary, and it did improve matters.

My grandmother died on Christmas Day, in the morning, while sitting at the breakfast table in the nursing home. Everyone in the family believes she chose that day on purpose so everyone would remember the date. It worked. My wife’s grandmother invited every one of her family to her home over the course of about a week. After the last person had visited, she died the next day. She knew, somehow, and was able to choose the date.

Another story from my recent NA visit. On arrival in Atlanta I went to the Dollar Car Rental desk … the young lady advised me that the Compact I had booked was not available and listed off a number of vehicle types I could choose from. Not being familiar with the options, I said I would be ok with a Nissan. When the documentation was presented, there was a $293 upgrade charge. I advised the young lady that that is not how it works, if they don’t have a Compact, they take the hit on the upgrade. No, she says, if I don’t pay the upgrade, I don’t get a car and I can go elsewhere! I asked to speak to the manager … “the manager is not available, you will have to wait, it could be half an hour …” After about 10-15minutes, another staff member comes to the desk, largely ignores the young lady’s protestations and starts working on the computer – she advises me that the nature of the payment is such that she can’t refund the upgrade charge at that point, but writes on the documentation to refund the charge with her name written. She advised, not to let the return team book me out, but to lock the car and go to the return desk when returning the car and show them the documentation and they would take care of the refund. The return staff were bemused, but helpful and delivered the refund. Appropriate feedback was provided to Hertz/Dollar re the experience.
Hiring a car at Thrifty in Calgary later in my trip was an entirely different experience. No Compact, no discussion, keys provided to a brand new upgraded car.
@PaultheManc Hertz is not the most pleasant rental company to deal with. If you come back this way, I’ve always had great luck with Enterprise. I rent at least a couple times a year from them and have never had any issues. That includes in the UK last year. I also have a reservation with them for my Spain trip next month and I’m hoping that goes smoothly too.

I heard on the radio that Fraudci had six lawyers with him. One of them got thrown out of the hearing for disruptions. Fraudci cited the 5th amendment 111 times. There is something seriously wrong with that.

Yesterday Big River rumbled up and well, that sure doesn’t look like a package containing the new solar panel for the gate.
A couple of USB sticks. I found a note, she wants all of the saved mail so she can read the stories she missed over the years. Two sticks, one to fill, one for me. Nice!
This morning brought another surprise. At the gate, which was wide open and beeping once a second, was a package on the ground. No idea, just it’s from Big River.
It was the sampler pack, I guess, of Tim Tams. Four flavors. What’s a Tim Tam? A rectangular cookie. The cookie part has a texture much like a Nilla Vanilla Wafer. But filled with frosting like an Oreo. Then dipped in chocolate like a Thin Mint. Really good stuff.
They were sort of stuck together but flexing the packages separated them. I haven’t opened any yet. I have some other junk food to finish first. Freshness!
I just checked my mail. She got the delivery notice for the USB sticks and then for the Tim Tams “hours later”. So Big River ran two trucks out to me yesterday…. one arrived after it was dark. Else the cookies would be a melted together blob.

Made it to New River Gorge for the bridge walk tomorrow. Toyota maps said 4 hour trip, it was 6. One stop at Buc-ee’s for gas. The big delay was a busy two lane highway where some construction crew had one lane blocked. I had to wait 20 minutes to get through, then very slow going, traffic the other direction was a three-mile backup. People at the back will take at least an hour to get through based on my timing of the crew controlling one way traffic.
We went to the bridge, found the place for the tour, then walked around the park a little bit. We saw one tour starting, a steep walk down the hillside, then flat for the bridge part. It is a one way trip with a shuttle return. We should be done by 11:00 AM.
We flew into Atlanta last fall and rented a vehicle from Enterprise.
The vehicle, a well-used last gen Camry, drove like it was on the verge of having a transmission problem.
60,000 miles. My guess is that the transmission fluid was never changed.
Otherwise, we’ve had decent experiences with Enterprise over the last few years.
At O’Scare, the substitution for the RAV4 my wife reserved was a BMW X5 at no extra charge, but I’ll debate anyone on whether that was truly an upgrade.
X5 used to be the grocery getter of choice in my neighborhood pre-Tonymobiles, and one stretch of road going to Home Depot and Sam’s seemed to be the place where all of them inevitably broke down.

Did some kid taxi for D2 who isn’t subject fully to my strike. Then auction pickup, then stuff dropoff at shop, then shopping at Costco. Not my normal grocery shopping, which I apparently never did, and don’t do, but I bought TP on sale, because eventually this nonsense will end, and I’m still a stingy bastage. Also bought a big hunk of beef to cut into NYStrip steaks. At $10/pound it was a good deal. Pork loin was on sale too, but I’ve got a lot of pork in the freezers.
The price for lamb ribs finally went up. I’m pretty sure it’s been the same for several years.
They’ve changed a lot at our costco, cutting the wine section dramatically, cutting the Apple ™ section and the jewelry section to ¼ of what they were. TV section seems like it’s an aisle smaller too. They had tables of clothes in the “just walked into the store” area that jewelry and Apple ™ used to occupy.
They’ve got TamTams in the snack section….
