Warm and moist. Chance of rain. Chance of sun too for that matter. It got sunny and warm later in the day yesterday, and actual was a bit uncomfortable. Sure doesn’t feel like winter any more. I think Spring is firmly here.
Did a bunch of piddly stuff around the house yesterday. Put handles on a cabinet. Installed some of the changes to my networking. Fixed a couple of things. Sorted and put away some stuff. Kids were home in the afternoon and monopolized the washing machine, or I’d have gotten some domestic bliss in there too.
I did manage to cook a full dinner, which I’ve detailed in yesterday’s comments. I would like to be back at a point where I can cook more often. With the kids’ activities, and ours, I don’t see much of that coming up though.
Today I’ve got a couple of auction pickups. I need to go by my rent house too. Tenant called about the garage door not opening and getting jammed so I need to take a look at that. It might be something I can fix, and it might be something better left to a pro. At least we can deduct money we spend on hires, which we can’t do for my time and work.
D2 is on a school trip for the rest of the week. D1 will be rattling around the house and then at a friend’s for the weekend. I need to keep moving and keep doing stuff no matter how small. Movement is good.
Work. It’s what you do until you die. Hopefully, there will be plenty for me to work on for a couple more decades. I’d just like to be a bit more in control of what I do.
Always be working. Always be stacking.

After working pretty much all night Tuesday* and consequently going to sleep very early Wednesday night and consequently waking up around 0300 today, I read some Aeneid and then wondered what I should do. And the answer came to me and I wondered why I even had to wonder.
Hey, Denis! Why are you still asleep? What are you, some kind of snoooooozer?
Oh, and also: Frsit pots!!!!!!11!!!
* Something needed to be completed before 0700 and the customer was paying enough to make it worthwhile to work on it through the night
Good morning, dear SteveF!
Yes, this morning I am indeed a snooooozer. For reasons unknown to man or beast, I was awake a long time in the night, and when I eventually did conk out, I slept until nearly 10 am. Fortunately, I am on leave from work, so slugabed is OK, even desirable.
I wasn’t quite as polymath as SteveF, reading Virgil (in the Latin, or translated?), but I did read one of the Science Fiction Megapacks from Wildside Press, which are just right for insomnia – short stories, not dull, and not too much thinking required. Recommended, not just for sleepless nights.
I do have an inkling why I couldn’t sleep. The nasty pollen time has reached the BOL; my eyes started itching around bedtime, and my sinuses are stuffy. On top of that, yesterday was the anniversary of my dear father’s death. He would have been 99 this year. I miss him.
It is a beautiful spring day here; blue skies and sunshine. Too bad about the pollen, though. The RAV4 is at the car doctor’s for a service (just over 200000km), so I will take a walk later and pick it up.
Have a lovely day!
Flash storage is another component area where prices are distorted by the Monkey Trick at the moment.
Capex for the AI infrastructure will be the biggest and final currency debasement. Everyone wants a piece of that action.
As for Apple, I think they had a warehouse full of unsold A18 chips when someone saw this presentation from Brian Kernigan. Pay attention to the answer at ~ the 56:56 mark.

Youngest is off on her trip. Eldest is grumping from her bedroom.
The huge dessert I had yesterday barely moved my blood sugar. I’m going to have to try that again. Timing? What I ate before? Dunno but it would be worth figuring it out.

Fitful sleep last night, woke to see the youngest off, then back to bed for an hour and a half, now up again. Might nap when W and D1 leave.
Sky is brightening, looks like light overcast at the moment. 71F.

Elevate the mood in the house by blasting Baby Shark at 110dB.
Tip: Be outside before the music starts. Or maybe across town.
Man, One Little Debbie apple pie snack. It’s like being ruffied without the buttsex. I’m up and moving now though.

I beg to differ. In a sane world, the second amendment would be interpreted to invalidate the entire NFA, and I could install a fun switch on any firearm I own.
Not that full auto fire is practical for more than 99% of civilian needs. But I bet it’s fun!
About 4,000SF of mid-calf weeds mowed on a single charge of the Greenworks 21″ self-propelled 80V mower. The entire FY and most of the 20′ wide parkway.
Color me impressed.
I did that during my military training, M16, in 1969. I can say it is not fun. It hurts and the muzzle direction is difficult to control until a person is used to the effect. The first time is quite startling, and loud. There is a reason the weapons were fired in training with physical restrictions on where the pew-pew-pew-pew-pew-pew-pew-pew end of the weapon could be directed.
“Number of the Day”
“2,072,361”
“The number of votes cast in the GOP primary for the U.S. Senate. In contrast, there were 2,223,968 votes cast in the Democrats’ primary.”

Well that does not bode well for the November elections in Texas.
Was proof of citizenship required in the primary?
Was proof of citizenship required in the primary?
A government issued photo id is required for ANY voting in Texas. In theory, that is proof of citizenship but a number of non citizens seem to have fallen through. They are being weeded out by requiring a birth certificate presented to get your driver’s license, id card, or license to carry a gun renewed.

I really, really, really hope that is not the voice of experience.
And anything from Little Debbie needs to be outlawed. Especially the Little Debbie cherry pie snack.
The Little Debbie cream filled oatmeal cookies are awesome. I haven’t had on in years. I think they were Little Debbie.
I miss the Hostess fruit pies. Apple was good. Peach was good. Cherry was simply great.
“Is C++ Dead?”
https://deepengineering.substack.com/p/is-c-dead
“According to the January TIOBE Index, C++ is currently the fourth most popular programming language after C and Python. C++ is the main programming language used in many critical systems, including hospitals, cars, and airplanes. But dare I say it: C++ is prone to errors. And in 2024, even the U.S. government chipped in. They dropped the bomb: C and C++ are not memory-safe programming languages. In 2026, might C++ be seeing its last days?”
No, not even close to starting to die. New projects are being started in C++ daily.
The last time I renewed my d/l in person, the letter said blah blah blah and bring a copy of your birth certificate.
Yes, I have a copy. I had to get it to get a passport. It’s in a safe place. Where is the safe place? Not anywhere I look. So I went to renew. Took my passport. Told the guy I don’t know where my b-cert is but I had it a couple of years ago to get a passport. But I’m pretty sure I had to give a copy when I got my Learner’s Permit while in high school.
He clicked a bit on his PC and said “no problem, we have all of your info”.
I’m obviously not someone with any indian genetics. Though I can tan enough that folks think I’m Mexican. With sun-blonde hair. That was fun the time we went to Puerto Vallarta. Because my spoken Spanish is not much past asking where is the bathroom, asking for another beer, and ordering from a menu in a restaurant. Well, cuss words too.

And in that sane world, any bozo emptying a magazine with a sere switch and going wild with one round would be immediately removed by responsible citizens using whatever necessary combination of firearms, hand grenades, and napalm.
Unless four tractors were immediately available.

If you can’t handle the Nutty Bars, Oatmeal Creme Pies or Star Crunch in the 12-bar single-serving ”Big Pack” just send them to me and I will help.

I’ve met Mexicans that are blond haired and blue eyed without a tan. Whiter than me. Obviously pure Spanish heritage.
Although it works in both contexts, I have to ask: Did you mean dot or feather?
Feather.
The ugly secret of the Cuban diaspora in South Florida is the amount of inbreeding that took place on the island among the elite families 70 years ago.
My order of the Pi and memory cards was going to be delivered Monday. Now, tomorrow. Nice.
I did no computer stuff today. Yeah, surfed the web and blogs. Went through my Documents folder again to toss stuff that I’ll never ever use on Mint.
But messing with smb.conf? Not today. It will take of 10 minutes to see if Greg’s suggestion works. Just not in the mood.
Donde esta el baño, por favor.
Una mas cervesa Pacifico por favor.
Fish tacos? Nah.
The crazy part of going to PV was that we were trying to use what Spanish we knew and every one there was “no, I need to practice my English.” It made for some interesting conversations as both sides tried to understand what the other person was saying.
The opening scene of the “Person of Interest” TV show (2011-2016) (link) starts with “You are being watched.”
I saw this today from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (link) :
Interesting story about how you and your data is the product not just for advertisers, but governments. The story includes steps you can take to reduce your risk of this tracking via your phone (Android or Apple).
The “Person of Interest” show was excellent (streaming available on Amazon Prime). If you watch it (or watched it previously), remember that it was filmed 10-15 years ago. Think of how the show’s premise has gotten even more realistic now.
To quote another phrase from the (very old) “Hill Street Blues” – “Be careful out there.”
Tangent change.
I stumbled across a Substack. You don’t need their app, FF on a PC works fine. Then I stumbled across https://ekolovesyou.com and many more sites/blogs.
So I liked one of EKO’s posts enough that I read it several times and then I actually paid him money. Because it went behind the paywall and I wanted to read it again.
Well. I asked him if he could un-paywall this one post. He did.

I’m not trying to start some kind of thread about religion. I’m not a church goer. I’m not some kind of Jesus crazed bible thumper. I’m just me. I see the how the seasons change. How the leaves fall from the trees in Fall and bloom in the Spring. I see how chickens and emu hatch. And puppies being born. And….. I don’t know if there is an almighty. I’m pretty sure I’m not capable of understanding god anymore than my dogs understand a can opener. But. There’s something there. I feel it. I don’t understand it and likely I never will.
Call me whatever. Go read the link.
Trump Despises RINOs. So Why Is He Reportedly About To Endorse One Of The Swamp’s Biggest?
https://thefederalist.com/2026/03/05/trump-despises-rinos-so-why-is-he-reportedly-about-to-endorse-one-of-the-swamps-biggest/
The Federalist has half a dozen related articles today.
Trump lives to broker deals for a win. Winning in the Senate is important. Sometimes winning is not the only thing–there is a thing called principle. An endorsement of Cornyn is going to be seeen–rightfully so–as a betrayal of MAGA. Worthy of Kissinger and realpolitik.
IMO, a mistake on the order of Obama shipping pallets of cash to the mullahs.
In the theoretical faceoff with Talarico, Cornyn is said to be +3 and Paxton is even. No mention of uncertainty, but it’s likely within the error.
Trump’s best move is not to stand with RINO’s and the Swamp. Support Paxton, and tell the RNC and the Senate Squishies to get on board or get run over.
And tell Thune to get the SAVE Act passed, or the idol thought will be “Why does John Thune have any peace to sleep for the rest of his miserable life?” No SAVE Act and every election going forward has the Democrat’s thumb on the scales, and twenty years hence when the Democrat uniparty dream is a reality due to millions of votes from illegals legitimized by fiat and scofflaw, The Biden Open Borders Gambit will be seen as the transformative move of the century, and Orange Man will be written out of the recommended history books just as sure as the new popular K-12 titles are “Why Should Anyone Tell You Where to Put Your D*ck” and “Daddy’s New Wife, Bob”
A friend fell at a Dollar General several months ago. She and the store manager filled out an accident report. SHe had not been contacted about being reimbursed for her medical expenses. She wants to hire a lawyer. SHe has a video on her phone of the accident site and the fillingout of the accident report.
Our questoin is what is the normal lawyer (range) fee for this? She thinks it should be low as because she has these videos.
Thanks
@bob, unless it’s changed, personal injury claims are basically 3x your medical bills and related expenses. ⅓ to the Drs, ⅓ to you, and ⅓ to the law firm.
I’ve settled two personal injury claims and my personal experience backs this up. Unless there was something really egregious involved.
Might want to google around too. Slip and falls are usually fraud, so some companies offer a low cash settlement to make them go away and save money on their lawyers. WalMart fights every one in court as a principle. or they did anyway.
Any initial consultation with a law firm should be free.

Waste from “clean energy” piles up across the U.S

Not scribbling on the back of an envelope, yet, but it seems to me that a 300-foot wind turbine blade could be cut off center to give a pretty stable tip-up carry of the larger part by a helicopter. Dropping from 1000 feet should get to an appreciable percentage of terminal velocity and be stabilized vertically by a slight spin imparted by the blade twist. On a calm day it would make quite a statement dropped into a mansion owned by a green energy company exec. Make a great photo. Have to paint an inspirational message on the blade.

That was a huge ship, 240 m (800 feet) long.
And now Iran does not have a navy. Sucks to be them.

We have a new-ish process in our group’s area of responsibility which the developer wrote with prompts to the AI to generate the C++.
Unfortunately, the developer doesn’t have a clue abou where to begin to fix the bugs since he doesn’t know a lot about basic C++ much less C++23.
I don’t get involved.

I am about halfway through to my next milestone on converting my data reconciliation tool from Fortran to C++. This stage is converting over 100,000 lines of Fortran in a hundred plus subroutines. I am hoping that it all comes together without any major issues as debugging this code will not be fun.
For my conversion from 32 bit to 64 bit project, this is the Proof of Concept stage.
Time for me to get the trash cans out and get to bed.
