Sun. Sept. 2, 2018 – time to do some more work

By on September 2nd, 2018 in Random Stuff

80F at 8am.

Another day of household work ahead of me, if I don’t get rained out.

Being away for 10 days really set me back on dad to day stuff. You don’t realize until you skip it, how many little things you do.

Our best wishes to Lynn for his continued recovery. And our prayers for the rest of our extended family who are ill or suffering.

The antics at the funerals this weekend will pale in comparison what’s coming in the awards season.

It would be fun if the Xenu believers could arrange for “Mission Impossible” to upset “Black Panther” in the new “Best Achievement in Black Panther -er- Popular Film” award category.

If any group could pull it off, it would be SeaOrg. Vindication for Tom Cruise and, indirectly, the “church”. “MI: Fallout” is definitely good enough to stake a legitimate claim on that award.

  3. dkreck says:

I don’t much care for the MI movies but probably because I don’t like TC. I’d rather watch reruns of the TV series.
    and…

Watched first two Jack Ryan episodes. So far I like it.

Crazyeyes can’t run for Prez in 2020 because she won’t be old enough.

On the other hand, Obuttsuck wasn’t American and he got inserted into the White House, so I guess Constitutional barriers aren’t all that important.*

    * If you’re a Democrat. Remember how the MSM were all up in arms about McCain not being a natural-born American citizen when he ran in 2000? Not that I’m any fan of Traitor John, but the media’s double standard gets tiresome.

  6. Nick Flandrey says:

Hmm, Costco by me has this “Baja” 900w propane inverter generator for sale, $299.

It looks identical to the Ryobi, except the plastic is different colors. (and the Baja colors look cheap)

Think it’s the private label version? Or the chinesium “third shift” version?*

*the first two shifts at the factory are for the customer, the third shift is for the thieves.

  7. lynn says:

Crazy eyes will be old enough to be VP though. And don’t think that the dumbocrats will not hesitate to run her with Newsom with a total Bernie candidate slate: open borders, free university, and free healthcare.

  8. Greg Norton says:

Not that I’m any fan of Traitor John, but the media’s double standard gets tiresome.

In 2012, during the week after the first debate when Mittens made Obama look vulnerable, some of the media outlets dug up the old dead horse about George Romney not being a natural born citizen, having been born in the polygamous Mormon colonies in Mexico.

Mittens was, of course, a citizen, having been born in Bloomfield Hills, but the situation struck me as if the groupthink was working on a meme to disqualify Romney the Younger based on the elder Romney’s questionable eligibility status in the 60s. Fortunately/unfortunately, Obama fought back during the second debate so deployment of the weapon of mass (media) destruction was not necessary.

  9. lynn says:

Thanks for the best wishes. I am doing very well considering. I highly recommended any minimally invasive version of a procedure. My dad had open heart surgery 21 years ago to replace his aortic valve. It took him a year to recover. He says that they can now replace that valve via an artery.

  10. Nick Flandrey says:

I’d like to think that that sort of nonsense will bring out the conservative voters who normally don’t participate.

Surely Ma and Pa Six Pack can see the disastrous effect those policies have had on their wages, earning power, neighborhoods, and safety…..

Given the numbers, every black in America could vote democratic and it wouldn’t matter one bit if the rest of the country voted. Same for every hispanic.

Crazy eyes will be old enough to be VP though. And don’t think that the dumbocrats will not hesitate to run her with Newsom with a total Bernie candidate slate: open borders, free university, and free healthcare.

I thought the VP requirements were identical to the President.

Newsom will run with BETO if Robert Francis (real *Irish 4th generation* name) pulls off the win in Texas — that’s why the CA money is here if I had to guess. Otherwise, Gwen Graham wouldn’t surprise me in order to play the “female” card, get her father’s name recognition advantage in FL … and pu old Bob himself out on the campaign trail.

I’d say the Dems slit their own throats in the primary in FL last week, sending Graham back to Miami with a copy of the home game, but then DeSantis went and dropped the “monkey around” line on Wednesday morning.

Trump can’t win without Texas and Florida, and both could be in play in 2020.

  12. Greg Norton says:

Surely Ma and Pa Six Pack can see the disastrous effect those policies have had on their wages, earning power, neighborhoods, and safety…..

Ma and Pa Six Pack might just decide that they want free stuff.

  13. lynn says:

I thought the VP requirements were identical to the President.

Oops, for some reason I thought that the VP only had to be 30. That makes no sense and the VP must be 35.

  14. lynn says:

Trump can’t win without Texas and Florida, and both could be in play in 2020.

Yes, sadly so. The porous borders over the last 40 years have done incredible damage.

  15. lynn says:

Ma and Pa Six Pack might just decide that they want free stuff.

Ma and Pa Six Pack were horribly educated by the “free” public schools. They do not understand what is free for one is taken forcibly away from another.

  16. paul says:

Ma and Pa Six Pack might just decide that they want free stuff.

Maybe so. But this Pa Six Pack doesn’t qualify for free stuff because he co-owns a 2004 Ford Van with his Mom that BlueBooks for $400 and he owns a ’02 Dodge Ram. Don’t know the BB for the truck, but I paid $1000 cash and the tax office charged me for $1680 value…. even with all the paperwork filled out. *

Food stamps. I looked a couple of years ago and if I lied or got rid of a vehicle, either of a ’96 Stratus or a ’92 Dodge truck, I qualified for about $270/month of groceries. I’m not that hungry to be a leech. Tho for stockpiling…. tempting, but no.

    * When I asked why they charged tax a higher value than what I paid, “that’s what the computer says”. So I have to fill out all this paperwork and you still charge what you want? Plus a $4.95 “handling fee”?? WTF?? She was not amused when I said everything I buy and sell in the future is going to be for $1000 on the paperwork. “You can’t do that!”
Hide and watch. Treat me like a liar and that’s what you are going to get.

“Dick Morris: Russia and China are Causing Climate Change, Not the US”
    https://www.westernjournal.com/dick-morris-russia-china-causing-climate-change-not-us/

“Since 1980, the United States has decreased its emissions of greenhouse gases by 65 percent — despite more than tripling our real GDP in the interval.”

“Since 2000, our carbon emissions have dropped from 20.2 million metric tons to 16.4 million tons today.”

“By contrast, China’s have risen from 2.7 million to 7.8 million over the same period and Russia’s are up from 10.6 million to 12.5 million.”

“It is not the United States whose policies need reversal — it is Russia and China’s.”

Interesting. I wonder if his numbers are correct.

We are getting a 1,800 acre solar power plant here in Fort Bend County that will be able to produce up to 200 MW. Sounds like a lot of land for what a single gas turbine on an acre of land could produce.

Solar should go on roofs. As a plus the panels shade the roof and keep the building cooler. Plus the composite shingles last longer.

OK, this is strange. I got a check for $14.76 from the FTC (federal trade commission) for purchases of Lights of America LED bulbs that were not meeting their life and strength claims. The strange thing is, I did not sign up for this refund. How did they know that I bought these light bulbs ?
    https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedings/refunds/lights-america-refunds

My thought is that they reviewed credit card charges at Home Depot and violated my privacy. Not good.

And, I would not sign up for the refunds. I do not want to be a party to this. But, I will cash the check since I have it already. And, I will not buy any more Lights of America bulbs but, I made that decision years ago based on experience.

  21. nick flandrey says:

Some stuff off my list despite the threatened t-storms, we just got a bit of rain, but mostly just overcast. Still didn’t want to bring home 12 bags of concrete mix and have them rained on. That’s what I need for my gennie slab.

So instead I installed a new battery in my Expy. 100 month Kirkland, failed after 60. Five years in TX is actually pretty good. They pro-rated and sold me a new one, 36 month warranty. That is both truck batteries this year. As a bonus, the radio system seems to have reset and come back to life. Hooray, and I didn’t even have to pull the dash. I’ve been driving it without a radio for a while now.

Fixed the windshield wiper pump on the Ranger. Removed it, banged on it, knocked the debris out, and it started running fine. Saved ~15$ and it had to be removed anyway, so why not try?

Pulled the clicking hard drive from my old Tivo, put it on my pc and verified that it wouldn’t spin up (need a drive for daughter’s pc.) Cracked it open to show the kids what is inside. Pretty cool. Single platter, 360Gb Western Digital “green power” drive. Has “av” in the model number so it might be optimized for constant spinning… failed after 6-7 years of hard use.

Sold two items on ebay today. I hope that is the start of things ramping back up.

Super humid, but only 85F, so it’s almost cool. Anywhere without a breeze is sweaty just standing still though.

Not feeling super today. Little bit of nausea. I think it’s related to wearing the ‘cheater’ glasses. They make my head spin when I forget and look thru them at the wrong time.

    Poking away at the pile.

  22. nick flandrey says:

@lynn, you don’t have any privacy. The plaintiffs probably just subpoenaed the store for every customer who bought the lights in the last 10 years. The stores are tracking the stuff because they can, storage is cheap, and they figure they can better market to you with it. Even if they never sell to an outside party, they still own the data, keep it, and can do whatever they want with it.

Only if they collected the data on a website, or somewhere else with a EULA and a privacy policy that they then violated is there any real issue.

I get random checks in the mail every so often. I wouldn’t have joined the suit if I thought about it, because I believe they mostly enrich lawyers and have little benefit for customers. Their position is that you have to “opt out” and I’m sure you either didn’t think much of the card when you got it, or did, and have forgotten in the intervening years.

I count it as free money.

There is a story floating around this weekend that Master Card sold a bunch of purchase data to Google, including offline purchases.

Also, Lights of America products were at Costco/Sam’s once upon a time.

  24. Greg Norton says:

Interesting. I wonder if his numbers are correct.

Probably. I would be willing to bet that most of the plastic in the “Pacific garbage patch” did not originate in the United States, but you know who will be asked to pay for the cleanup once they figure out what to do with the junk.

I think that I am on my third battery in my 2005 Expedition and the wife just got her fourth battery in her 2005 Civic. And the spurious electrical problems are bothering me too. The worst is the steering wheel switches, they are all going out. The bothersome switches are the cruise control buttons as they are not duplicated on the dash.

We have a highly technical society built out of borderline componentry that requires constant maintenance. I have a bad feeling that I would be astounded by the cost to generally improve all of the solutions that we use to a higher level of reliability.

  26. Greg Norton says:

Yes, sadly so. The porous borders over the last 40 years have done incredible damage.

West Coast real estate going parabolic has been the bigger problem. That combined with the total lack of growth management in Florida and Texas.

Now I understand why it looked like there was a mini run on gasoline at HEB when I stopped this afternoon.

After last Labor Day, it doesn’t take much to generate panic among the new-ish Austin residents.

I remember Lights of America. They were early, in super cheap packaging, and looked like one step above a scam. I don’t recall buying any.

  30. nick flandrey says:

@paul, TX wants to charge you the fee based on Kelley Blue Book. It keeps people from writing $100 on the bill of sale. They tried that with me on my Expy, but since it was sold by a municipal agency, at auction, the law correctly recognizes that the vehicle’s worth is what someone will pay for it at public auction. Saved me a bunch of money.

I’ve still got about 6 or 7 of them installed in my office buildings. I probably had 50 of them at one point. I am slowly replacing them with GE LED bulbs.

They were among the first CFL bulbs available at the warehouse stores. The white light from them tended to be harsh.

I just put a new battery in my wife’s 2015 Crosstour. She drives about 6 miles to work…not enough to consistently charge up the battery. I finally bought another battery tender and throw it on her car several times a week. Got the battery at Costco – best price by far.

I have loved that about my Expy that both of the dash power stay alive when the ignition is off. Good on both of them because I fried one of them and have yet to fix the circuit (oh yes, I did it good, the wiring melted in the console).

Three years is decent for a battery anymore, and I’ve never seen a manufacturer’s stock battery last beyond that length of time, going back 25 years.
