Mon. May 26, 2025 – Memorial Day, USA

By on May 26th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Hot and humid today, on the unofficial start of Summer. It was steamy all day yesterday even after the rain cleared out. Dunno if we’ll get rain today, but it would be nice to have a nice day.

Flags at half staff until noon, then raised to full, as we spend the morning remembering those who fell in the fight, and the afternoon celebrating what they fought for. Friends and family. It’s always that in the end.

———–

I spent yesterday chipping away at the list. Some additional items ‘spontaneously’ got added, and were dealt with. I did get the grass cut, and trimmed, and the debris blown clear. I pruned trees. I even bagged the peach tree with a giant mesh bag that is supposed to keep insects and critters from eating your fruit. We’ll see if any survive to be harvested this year. Most years the critters spoil all the fruit before it ripens.

Spent a few minutes talking to one of the neighbors here who lives in Houston and is a bit more prepper minded than most. He just installed a solar system with two Tesla Powerwalls for storage. It’s some sort of leased thing, where he pays a fixed rate, which was less than his utility bill. Don’t know the details, but it sounds like more of the financial shenanigans that most solar companies are dealing in, except that he gets the storage too. He’s just done it, and I’ll be interested in his results and happiness in a few months or a year.

I’m not sure I would want a big battery next to the house… but there is an appeal to having the system.

——
Went for a short cruise around the lake with my wife. She enjoyed it, as it was nice and cool with the wind after a day working.

——-
Today we’ll be doing things to get ready to head home, and I still have to put solar panels somewhere, and unload my truck. It’s gonna be a move this and move that kind of a day, I think. They feel like just shuffling the deck chairs, but it is important. I found some things I’d brought up here while looking for other stuff in the garage, which drove home the need to properly put stuff away. If you can’t find it, do you really have it?

Stack stuff. Learn stuff. USE the stuff.

Sun. May 25, 2025 – 05252025 Maybe we’ll get the boat out for a spin…

By on May 25th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Sure to be hot and humid today with a chance of rain. We’ll see what we really get. Rain would be good for the land and the lake, but not so much fun for us.

It took me a while to get going yesterday, after rising at a reasonable time, getting out of the house took a while. Loading up the truck took some sweat and time. If I didn’t have a deadline for a pickup, I probably would have left even later. I did make my pickup with 15 minutes to spare. And it included 5 gallons of diesel fuel when I thought I had just gotten empty cans. I will move that to a proper yellow jug today. The rest of the day is in yesterday’s comments.

I’ve got a full slate today, with “unload the truck and put stuff away”, “cut the grass”, and “investigate a slow plumbing leak” leading the list. Freaking indoor plumbing. It’s one of the miracles of the modern age, but sure can be a pain to maintain. You never know what you’ll find when you open a wall…

But I’m hoping for a nail through pex and a very slow leak.

There will need to be some organizing of sheds and a lot of stacking stuff in the shed, with a bit of swapping out winter for summer gear involved too.

There is always more to do. Always more to stack. The stacks make it easier now, they’ll make it possible later…

Get busy.

Sat. May 24, 2025 – Headed to the BOL, eventually…

By on May 24th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Hot and humid, probably. We did get a front that came through late in the day, and some wind with a little cooling, but IDK if it will really make a difference. All the rain missed me, and it was 101F in the driveway at 5pm… I think today will be similar. Forecast for the next couple days might have some rain in it.

That would be nice if we weren’t at the BOL for the long weekend.

I did get stuff done yesterday. All my scheduled pickups went well. I managed to get the kid where she needed to be on time. Picked her up too. She went to see an R rated movie with her girlfriend and regretted it. Too much realistic gore and she was really freaked out by the audience laughing at the gruesome deaths. Yeah kid, there are sick people in the world, and they get encouraged by the mass media. Desensitized to violence for years. It’s not an accident, it’s too pervasive.

Today I’m sleeping in a bit, then I will load up. W and the Ds will head up late morning, I’ve got a pickup on the way that I can’t do before afternoon. I’m hoping the solar install stuff gets here before my departure too.

I wouldn’t mind a little rain, if it happens overnight, but I don’t want to spent the whole weekend indoors. However, it’s not up to me, so I’ll just deal with it.

And I’ll be working to improve my situation. Like always. And probably stacking something.

‘Cuz you know that’s the right thing to do, right?

Fri. May 23, 2025 – some stuff to do, some to put off, some off putting…

Warm, and moist. Great in a cake, not so great in the weather. But it could be cold, and moist, which hurts. I’m assuming that we actually will get to hot and wet before the end of the day. It was certainly hot and moist yesterday.

I did get some stuff done. I got three pickups out of the way, with a bunch more to do today. Then it was grocery shopping for the weekend (and some sale items) and kid stuff. The kid stuff took until late, then dinner out, then finally home.

Today will be mostly pickups. Some shopping for stuff for the BOL. Some loading of stuff to take up. I am juggling possibilities to see if I go up today or tomorrow. It’s looking like tomorrow as I have some awkwardly timed pickups. Even then, I won’t be leaving in the morning tomorrow either. Which raises the question of picking up the solar panels today, or tomorrow on the way out of town… The timing really sucks though, with nothing quite lining up. The most annoying thing is that I didn’t win the major item in the auction with the last pickup, but I did win some minor things. So I’m stuck getting them later than I would have liked.

I was busy with the kid stuff and couldn’t adjust my bids.

Oh well. I like to combine trips, and have everything lined up, but I can’t always. W and the girls can’t head up until later Saturday either because of kid stuff commitments. As long as I get everything, it is what it is.

Probably time to buy even less, but I find it hard to pass on a great deal. And there is still stuff we need, like stuff for the boat. Freaking auction had a bunch of good stuff, on Lake Conroe, which was convenient too. But I didn’t win most of it. Had I known, I’d have been more aggressive bidding on lots once I knew I was making the trip.

It seems like there is always something to do, or buy. But that’s the story of my life. Always be working, always be stacking. Today’s no different.

Thur. May 22, 2025 – Still busy, just different busy

Still hot too. It was a bit cooler yesterday and was even pleasant in the shade, with a breeze. Since the overcast held up for a lot of the day, temps didn’t climb as high. I’m hoping today is similar.

Did my doctor visits. Apparently I’m healthy. Cardiac, oncology, bloodwork, all good. Ruling out any major issues is a good thing. I’ll do my follow up colonoscopy in the next couple of months, and some allergy testing. That should answer any remaining questions. After all that, I can stride confidently into my next decade.

Did some shopping in between docs. Grabbed 130 media at the Goodwill outlet. That’s about half movies, half CDs, and some books and games. Most of the books and games will go to my auctioneer. Everything else will get ripped to the server. It was a rare day to have all that stuff I wanted.

Stopped in at the fun store to see my friends. Had a nice chat and they did a steady stream of business while I was there. They had a lot of pistols on consignment. I’ve been seeing a lot of ammo in my auctions lately, even .22LR. Times are getting tight again, methinks.

Taking D1 and her friends out for dinner rounded out the evening. Good news from the docs, and a night with family. It was a good day.

Today I’ll be trying to get a couple of pickups done. I’ve got a few other things to do too, but most of the day is open. Tonight, D2 walks across the stage at her middle school. Time FLIES.

Use that power of time to do a little, frequently. Before you know it, you’ll have world class stacks, speak another language, have a solid new skill, or have saved for your BOL. Or all of those if you are ambitious.

Stack the good things.

Wed. May 21, 2025 – full day ahead… and full steam ahead, iceburg ahoy!

Warm. Uncomfortably warm. And moist. Can’t forget moist. Summer in Houston is here. 80F by 8am? Maybe. Certainly got warm yesterday despite the overcast most of the day, for most of Houston. I drove all over and got only a bit of mist on the windshield despite the threatening skies. Then it was thunder and lightning around 8pm, but no release…

Did a few pickups yesterday. IDK what’s up with my brain but this was another day when I just couldn’t get the pickups in in the time I thought I could. I left the house a bit late, due to some gastric distress, and that threw off my whole plan for the day. Unfortunately I didn’t realize it until too late. I might have forfeited about $50 worth of items. One auctioneer is a real bastard about pickup times. I did hit Costco after picking up the kid from school. A quick in and out with only a few items and it was still over $200.

Today I’ve got pickups and two doctor visits. The orthopedic surgeon in the morning to take a look at my right bicep, and my GP in the afternoon to review all the testing I had done. I am afraid I tore something in my previously repaired bicep. It’s not as bad as when I tore it loose the first time, but I definitely heard and felt something give, and it does ache a bit. Maybe the MRI can show if his repair has failed, or if I have a new tear.

Then I’ll meet with my GP to go over all the imaging and cardiac testing I’ve had done. Didn’t find any issues, clean bill of health, but the underlying complaint is still there. Getting old isn’t for the weak, or the indigent. I’m pretty sure I’ll hit my deductible this year, for the second time in 20 years, iirc.

I’m not really complaining too much. I’m healthy and most of the mechanical fixes were straightforward. Wife and kids are crazy healthy compared to just about anyone else I know. The system is broken however, and it does chafe occasionally.

Grid up, we’re living in the future, so let’s leverage that for all it’s worth.

Unfortunately with yesterday’s miscalculations and today’s appointments, I’m losing whatever momentum I had. I know how the next two weeks play out, and it isn’t with me making headway on my storage units or selling a bunch of stuff. Gnu dang it.

I will do what I can, and always be working. Stacking would be easier.

Tues. May 20, 2025 – just another day in May, which is the 5th month

By on May 20th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

Warm and humid again, with some sun. That describes what ended up happening Monday. The sun poked through and broiled my brains. The same is on deck for today.

I spent the morning yesterday doing home things. I put stuff away. I got stuff down from the attic. I stacked some stuff for later. And then I took a whole pickup full of mostly speakers and amps to my buddy’s shop where I’ll meet people to sell them on Craigslist. That got a bunch of stuff out of my “library”. I took some of the stuff for my local auction over there too. I’m about to rearrange and move a bunch of things in my local home environment, as soon as I am sure of what I want to do. Getting stuff out of the way helps. I did some kid taxi later, and even got the broken sprinkler head replaced.

Little things, but needed things.

Today I have pickups. Some down in Missouri City, some in Cypress. More driving than I’d like in a single day, but can’t be helped. As long as I can generate some forward movement and momentum, I’m happy. Of course that will come to a slamming halt with the end of school year, Memorial Day, and then a week in central Florida with my mom and siblings. Or maybe just sibling, but mom is looking forward to it. Life. Overrated.

Or not.

Do what you can. Move forward if you can. Stay even if you can’t. Limit how much you fall behind if that doesn’t work. Stack.

Mon. May 19, 2025 – not your average picnic basket

By on May 19th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

Hot again. Sunny still. Like yesterday. I ran out of time to procrastinate some of the outdoor work so I was out in the sun and heat yesterday. No sir, I didn’t like it. But it needed to be done. More will need to be done in the coming days too.

I didn’t do much in the morning. Took more rest than I’d intended actually. Felt good. But I knew I had to do some stuff on the list. So I did outdoor work. I fixed my mower and cut the grass in the back yard. I did some weeding and killed some ants in the raised beds. Grapes are developing well on the remaining vine. I didn’t cut any shoots back this year, so maybe it’s lighter than it should be, but hey there are grapes. I think it’s whatever variety the root stock is though after the die back of a few years ago. The skins are tough and thick.

The perennial collards are doing very well. I’ll harvest some soon.

I did some clean up along the fence line and pruned some of the foliage along the fence. Checked on the apple trees, and I’ve got apples on the older tree for the first time ever. I think the cooler spring might have helped there.

Did some work on the sprinklers and tested the zones. Some more work will be required as one of the heads was just shooting water into the sky… but I’ll get to that later this week.

I even moved a few things around the house and yard to sort and put stuff away. And don’t forget the domestic bliss, two loads of laundry! Now folded and put away.

I got a surprising amount of stuff done in half a day. If only I could keep that up for a week or two.

We’ll see, but I think my other responsibilities will derail the effort.

Call it ‘always be working’ and improving my situation. Or what it really is, finally getting to some of the stuff I’ve been putting off for too long.

In any case, stacking is easier than doing without…

Sun. May 18, 2025 – Somebody might rest today, but not me, well, not much

By on May 18th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

Warm bordering on hot, and well into hot later, if forecasts and common sense are to be believed. It was sunny and hot Saturday with my driveway thermometer showing over 100F in the afternoon. Probably be the same today. Although, the wind picked up a lot in the late night, so something might be blowing in on the winds of change.

I didn’t get as much done as I’d hoped yesterday, but then I was pushing against the world and that never goes well for me. For some reason I couldn’t make the time math add up correctly, so I was late or missed most of my appointments. I did stop at the boat guy and finish the paperwork, so that was an important task off the list. Now to go to Fish and Game and complete the changes in ownership and get the registration in our name.

Today I’m sleeping in a bit, then putting away all the stuff that came home in the past week. I will also try to pull stuff for my local auctioneer. That is pretty much the extent of my goals for the day. Some yardwork can happen too, if it’s not too hot.

Not much stacking this week, more refinement and retrenchment, with a bit of stacking. I’m gonna have to work harder, and smarter. Joy.

We’ll see how I do. You- do as I say, not as I do! Stack.

Sat. May 17, 2025 – more, more, more, and more

By on May 17th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

More warmth. It’s supposed to be hot again today. At some point yesterday it was over 101F in my driveway… of course in past years that would be normal for this week. The light overcast cleared late morning and then it was sunny and hot. Today should be more of the same.

I didn’t get much done in the morning yesterday. Took the kid to school because my wife took the other one on her field trip to the beach in Galveston. The school goes every year and it’s a great time for the kids. W enjoyed her time with the other moms, and got to know her new car on the way down. She likes some of the driver assistance stuff, but acknowledges that I would hate it, and that it falls apart in construction zones. The sales guys said the windshield, with the camera glued to it, was less than $900 not thousands, if it needed to be replaced. Still not as cheap as straight glass, and I bet there aren’t any aftermarket choices. Oh well, not my car.

I did a lot of driving in the afternoon and some of it was really a waste. IDK how I got the pickup days wrong for the two auctions in Dickenson (way south, only 20 miles from Galveston) but I didn’t roll two pickups into one trip, and even the pickup I did was on the wrong day, and it would have been cheaper to have the items shipped… I’m going to have to stop bidding in those two auctions, they are just too far away, and I don’t need the stuff that badly.

Took a break in the afternoon to get D1, but she didn’t want to practice driving to my other pickup. So I left her at home and got some camping/cooking supplies. I have a bunch of different ways to cook in a grid down scenario, and they all take different fuels. I picked up some of the butane cans very cheaply yesterday. I like the single burner butane “camp stoves” that so many asians use to cook at the table. Having more fuel for them is a good thing. The cans look like spray paint cans.

As an aside, my strategy is “choices” and “defence in depth” and those apply to all areas of my preps. Instead of having a huge cache of fuel for one type of stove and spares, etc. I have several different stoves, with different fuels, with the idea that I can use whatever fuel might be available… I have reasonable stacks of fuel for each, and combined across all the types I do have quite a substantial cache.

And it’s a little bigger after yesterday. BTW, I picked up a couple of Mr Heater refillable 1 pound propane tanks. I’d refilled the ‘disposable’ ones, but there are issues with that. These are designed to be refilled from a BBQ bottle, and they are DOT approved. Now I’ve got even more flexibility.

Today will be picking up the solar panels and another auction pickup, and doing stuff around the house. I might even get some done this time.

There will surely be stacking too.
