Sun. Aug. 17, 2025 – no rest for me, well, not much

By on August 17th, 2025 in cooking/baking, culture, lakehouse

Hot and humid, but maybe a little bit less hot. Yesterday had some storms pass around us and that helped bring the temperature down for a bit. Got into the 90sF later though. Hopefully, today will be clear but a little overcast wouldn’t be terrible.

I finished my walkway. For now anyway. I got a couple of sections of roof powerwashed but have more to do today. It was a good amount of work considering my later start. I’m hoping that getting the roof back to shiny white will help with the A/C bill by reflecting more heat. It wasn’t on my list at all but it fit into it by being something I could do in the heat. It looks so much better too. I wonder if there is some sort of wax or spray that would make it more slick to keep the dirt and mildew off of it.

Today I’ll do more roof washing, then I’ll pack up for home. I don’t think the grass needs mowing, but I’ll look again in the daylight. The dishes need washing and the house needs a general spruce up. The girls will probably head up next weekend, while I have my hobby convention. Maybe I’ll even get some stuff put away in the garage. Could happen.

All it takes is time and motivation.

And stacking.

Sat. Aug. 16, 2025 – at the BOL, working. Unless it is raining…

By on August 16th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

But it’s probably not raining. It’s probably 100F and 90+% RH. Because that’s what yesterday was like. And tomorrow will probably be like that too.

I did my stuff Friday, and actually left the house at the time I needed to. That let me do a pickup on the way. Water skis, solar panels, EZGo parts, and a plate compactor. What a load. Took a while to get through traffic, and when I got here, the A/C wasn’t working. Got that fixed. Details in yesterday’s comments. Then it was still hot and humid so I stayed in my air-conditioned house and read.

Today I’ve got two main goals, and a minor goal. I have to compact the crushed slag walkway. I would like to continue pressure washing the roof. And I have to cut and remove a limb that broke and is partially resting on the roof. There are many other things I can do too, mostly involving putting away and organizing all the stuff I’ve been bringing up here. The major projects are too involved to start most of them on a weekend when it’s only me here (and the dog) or they involve work in the attic which isn’t advisable in this heat.

There is a lot of stacking to do. And a lot of improving. I’ll get to some of it. Stack something of your own.

Fri. Aug. 15, 2025 – hi ho, hi ho, ho ho ho…

By on August 15th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Hot and humid, although a front moved by and brought some cooling – and some rain in parts of town. I’m guessing we’ll get more hot and humid for a while yet, with occasional thunderstorms.

I did get stuff done yesterday. Did some pickups. Mostly stuff for the BOL and another solar panel. Talked with my auctioneer about bringing in more stuff to sell. He put me off into next week. Which really pushes into the week after, since I’ll be busy getting ready for my hobby thing.

Today I’ll be loading the truck for my quick trip to the BOL. I’ve got stuff to finish there this weekend and the girls have a GS thing scheduled. I’ll do a pickup or two on the way. I’ve got some domestic bliss to take care of here first, and some other stuff that I need to do too. I will take the dog with me, so I won’t have the luxury of just working straight through for hours at a time. That can be a blessing in disguise I guess.

It’ll be working to improve my situation, and not as much stacking, but it’ll keep me busy.

I’ve got a feeling I’ll be busy for a while. Stack something, it’s easier.

Thur. Aug. 14, 2025 – yah think?

By on August 14th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

More hot and more humid. Quantity and quality. We did get some clouds yesterday, with the occasional drop or two hitting the windshield, depending on where you were in town. We even had thunder and lightning in the late evening. The east coast may even get a hurricane in a few days. Good times, right?

I did some of what I needed to do. One pickup. Contact with two potential buyers for the stuff I’ve got on craigslist. Some time at my buddy’s shop. Figured out why there was no power– 5 dunning notices, culminating in disconnection were sitting at the bottom of the mailbox. I guess I’ll be getting an account set up myself.

Kids’ first day of school went well. They both have friends in classes and they can eat together at lunch. D2 has math in the same class as D1’s bestie. Kid is up two grades in math, since elementary school, and she’s keeping up. She’s got a lot on her schedule with band, theater, and debate…

Today I’ll be doing two more pickups on the other side of town, and making a run past my secondary location. I’ve also got some office stuff to do, and some more domestic bliss. And it’s kid taxi day too.

It’s all good. Still leaves time for stacking.

Which everyone should be doing, right?

Wed. Aug. 13, 2025 – school days, school days, dear old golden rule days

By on August 13th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

Hot and humid. Again. Because I still have brain that hasn’t melted out of my head. Yet. But if this weather holds, I’ll be wiping brain off my shoulders…

It was hot yesterday. Really, no surprise as it’s Houston, and still summer. We were blessed with a long mild Spring, so I really shouldn’t complain, but… it’s sweaty hot.

I did get a few things done. I got the trash from the BOL and from the last trip to the BOL finally disposed of. I moved some stuff to my buddy’s shop. I answered a couple of questions about stuff for sale. And I picked up the kid from band practice. Not really very much when I look at it.

Today, I’ve got a pickup or two. I wasn’t going to bid on stuff but I backslid. But whatever I do it will be AFTER sending my kids off to high school for the first day of school. Time is flying by. I’ve got to do some domestic bliss and I really should list a few more easy and high dollar listings. End of the month is coming up too soon.

I’m also hammering out statements like a machine gun, without enough connective phrases, so I better stop now.

Things to do, people to see, preps to stack…

Tues. Aug. 12, 2025 – let’s try again

By on August 12th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

Hot. Oh my hot. Mid 90sF in the afternoon, no breeze, but at least there was some overcast. That’s what today will be like too, probably.

I hid indoors. My back was killing me. Standing. walking. sitting, all hurt. Eventually I got the shiatsu machine to work on it, followed by a hot shower and stretching, then more stretching. It finally moved, and felt good for about an hour. Not much productive happened. I think it was caused by the time I spent standing on the sloped roof, pressurewashing. That was very awkward and I did it for a couple of hours. In any case, it really hurt and I didn’t feel like doing anything more than catching up on paperwork and online auctions.

Today I’ll have to do some stuff. I’ve got a craigslist guy and an ebay guy that need more info about stuff I’m selling, so I have to go figure out the answers to their questions. Fortunately I told them I’d get back to them on Tuesday.

I’ve got kid taxi, and domestic bliss to do today too. No rest for the wicked. Or wrest ‘or the wicket. Sticky or not.

Today is the 7th anniversary of my dad’s passing, and I miss him. I’ve been thinking about him a lot this last week, when I wasn’t focused on the job. His legacy is me, my siblings, our kids, and a some things he made for us. I feel like I’ll have done pretty well if I turn out just like him.

In the mean time, I’ll keep working. And stacking. And hoping.

Mon. Aug. 11, 2025 – home sweat home…

By on August 11th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

Hot and humid. Again and still. Here in Houston too. We did get some thunder but no rain at the BOL yesterday afternoon. It seems to be like my house here, weather often swerves around us. Beautiful sunset and huge orange moon rising…

I got a bunch of stuff done. And some stuff started. Mowed the lawn. Seeded the bare dirt and sprinkled it in. Cleaned up leftover dirt and debris in the driveway. Powerwashed the rental machines. Powerwashed the house, the roof, and the garage door. The roof is white metal corrugated roofing and it was looking shabby. I only had time to do the side facing the street, but what a difference. I’ll have to do it all now. Then it was ‘leaving the BOL’ list… and home.

Today I’ve got a list to do here. Because of course I do. It’s long too. Kids start school Wednesday, so there will be some getting ready for that too. I’m sure that they’ve forgotten something critical. You always do.

Stack, plan, help, build, repair, reuse, rejoice.

Sun. Aug. 10, 2025 – getting ready to head home.

By on August 10th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Still gonna be a hot one. So humid. So hot. Blazing sun. Forecast has us on the edge of some t-storm possible areas, but we’ll likely have another day like yesterday. And the week before.

I did more work with the machines, cleaned up some details. Put some stuff away. Chatted with one of the neighbors for a while. A slower day for sure, with a late start.

Today will be more of that. Sleeping in a bit, then doing all the normal visit stuff. Lawn needs mowing. Stuff needs to be added to the stacks. Machines need to be fueled and cleaned. They are scheduled for pickup on Monday morning. Maybe I’ll leave for home before dark, we’ll see how it goes. There is always more that could be done, but I’m not starting any projects.

It’s been a productive 9 days.

It’s been hot, and hard work too. Filthy work with red clay silt everywhere, and the dust from the slag too. My throat hurts from breathing all the cr@p. Or I’m getting sick, but I hope it’s environmental.

Time to wrap up this show and get ready for the next thing.

More stacking. More working to improve.

Sat. Aug. 9, 2025 – still at the BOL, still working.

By on August 9th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

And it’s still hot. Humid like a swamp. Sun like a laser death ray. And that was yesterday. Today will likely be the same.

I did get stuff done. I’ve finished the walkway. I’ve knocked down all the dirt piles and flattened the area. I’ll take another look in good light, but I think I’ll throw some grass seed on it and walk away. I’ve still got crushed slag left, and I have a potential use. My fishing buddy suggested making a pad under the new shed where I’ll park the lawn mower.

Unfortunately, the old shed is still there. I would love to crank something out while I have the machines, but the shed project is far down the list. I guess I’ll just have another pile of material waiting for the time.

Today I’ve got cleanup, and putting things away. I’ll take an hour and call into my non-prepping hobby meeting instead of attending in person. That gives me 8 hours of daylight today, and 10-12 tomorrow for working. Or maybe it gives me time to take a break before rushing home into the beginning of the school year.

Gotta stop and smell the roses sometimes.

Always be working. And stack some good times too.

Fri. Aug. 8, 2025 – well, more work. What a surprise.

By on August 8th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Hot. So hot in the sun. And humid. Crazy humid. Ten minutes of raking in the sun and I need to go inside and cool down. And a breeze? What’s that? I think today will be like the last three days. Gorgeous and sunny, if I was on vacation. Misery if I’m working outdoors.

I got a lot done. See yesterday’s comments for details. There is still plenty on the list, if they don’t pick up the machines today. If they do, I’ll go home. If not, I’ll stay and keep working.

I’ve got plenty still to do. I need to finish cleaning up from the walkway install. There are a few more grading things to do, and I need to finish knocking down the dirt piles I had left over from 2023 when I last had the machines here. And I’ll have to move the leftover crushed slag. I guess I’ll have a pile of something no matter what I do.

A second home takes a lot of work. A BOL takes more because of the rural setting, lack of local services and stores, and providing more of your own services and support. The work I’m doing this week isn’t critical. It won’t increase my readiness or resilience (well the new garden might), but it does impact the family’s use of the property, and it helps with integration into the community.

And those are good things.

Keep stacking. Keep working. Keep the faith.
