Mon. May 16, 2022 – still at lake

Sunny cool and clear in the morning, getting hot later.   Probably the same in Houston.

After I set up an A/C service visit, I’ll work in the garden for a bit.  I spent several hours yesterday rototilling the whole thing again.   I thought I’d just get the grass off, but that took multiple passes, and increasing the depth.  I eventually got the whole plot tilled to an even depth.  Made my rows and planted two of them.  I did not know that beans should be soaked overnight before planting, so they will get planted today.

The planting choices are a bit wierd, but some of the seeds I have won’t do well this late.  I’m pushing it with what I am planting.  I wanted to get SOMETHING in though.   Since the fence isn’t in yet, I covered the whole row with hardware cloth in a tunnel shape.   I’ll either have to bring up more hardware cloth, or get busy on the fence.

I spent the hottest part of yesterday doing some other things, including taking a break to eat lunch with my wife on the dock.  Very cool breeze on the dock…   So I tried my hand at throwing the cast net.   Tougher than it looks.  I did manage to catch 3 little fish that would have made decent bait, which is what you do with the cast net in Texas.   I’ll need more practice, and maybe an in person coach…

The eclipse was cool.  Glad I got to see another one.

Unless things go horribly wrong, I’ll head home in the afternoon.  I’ve got a list of stacks to move up here, and more stuff to do work with.  We have one bedroom with the paint, ceiling fan, flooring, and furniture in it.   There is only the closet floor still to do.   Plenty of other work to do…

I’ve been sipping the news through a tiny straw, so I might have more to say later.   Someone asked the question “what will they come up with next to distract us?”   Now we know.   Yes, I know that is crazy conspiracy talk.  I will need to see more coverage before it’s anything more than a wry observation, but the question was asked.

Stack some stuff.   It’s getting weirder daily.

Wed. May 11, 2022 – well it’s Wednesday already…

Hot and humid again.  Pretty nice yesterday, although hot, the  humidity was lower and in the shade it was very pleasant.

I got some pickups done, and took some stuff to storage.  Oh, and I used the dumpster at my secondary location to get rid of more debris from the BOL.

Today the plan is  to get another pickup done, then move stuff from storage to the auction, and get an item for my non-prepping hobby swap meet sale this weekend.

I might make a run up to the BOL depending on timing and how I feel.  That would put me up there overnight and part of Thursday.  If I’m there, I might as well do some work…  and if I’m doing work, I will do it in the garden.  I’ve got a whole load ready to go up anyway.

Meanwhile, the world turns.   The stock market might be finally reacting to the other stuff going on, and the thing that can not go on forever will come to an end.  Remember that in 2008 the collapsing market values were a stairstep down, a pause, then again, and again, and again.  There were mini recoveries, but the trend was down.  I’m hoping against it, but I think this might be time.  It is well overdue by most accounts.  We’ll certainly know soon enough.

No matter what happens, as many folks have been saying in one way or another,  stacks will help.

So stack, like your life depends on it.  Because it might.

Tues. May 10, 2022 – no pithy comment today

Hot and humid, but clear, like yesterday…   So I better get some stuff done early, or sweat to the skin later.

Did all indoor stuff yesterday.  I spent a bunch of time trying to model the slope and terrain at the BOL in Sketchup.   The ‘sandbox’ tool is great for fantasy terrain, but there doesn’t seem to be a good fast way to match existing.   I’m about half way through trying to do something with contours… which if it doesn’t work, I’ll have to do over with a different method.   Just plotting my elevations has been useful to see the ‘lay of the land’ though.

Speaking of the BOL, I think I’m shooting for heading back up on Wednesday.  I’ve got so much to do, and I get more done when I’m there by myself, that I can’t skip a week.  We’re heading up for the weekend, but it will be another short trip.

New A/C system seems to be a bit more efficient than the old.   Days like yesterday, the old system would be falling behind by 330 pm, but the new system kept up just fine.  Tentatively I’ll call it money well spent.

Sometime soon, I’ve got to do some personal checkups and maintenance on this old body of mine.  Better to do it than to wait.  Obamma-lamma no care kicked my various doctors’ @sses and I’ve been without a primary care doc for too long.  Past time to do something about that.

Add it to the list.

And stack it high.

Sun. May 8, 2022 – Happy Mother’s Day

Hot here, and continues to be hot in Texas, and much of the mid-west.  It was in the 80’s even with some overcast, and late in the day.  I’m expecting the same today, but maybe today I’ll get in the lake.

Saturday had me doing a bunch of stuff before leaving the house.  One thing was putting my network rack back together and making sure my cams were up and recording.   Two of the neighbors had their trucks burglarized the night before and I didn’t get any video.  Both left the trucks unlocked, both lost gubs.   That is just seriously stupid, and it’s the second time for the one guy.

Finally I got on the road.  Stopped in Conroe to do a pickup.  More stuff for the BOL.   Eventually got here.

My perfectly prepped garden has sprouted GRASS in a uniform layer.   If I’d  planted it, I doubt it would have looked so good.  That’s going away today, and some veg WILL get planted.  One good thing, it showed that the back two feet of tilled earth don’t really get enough sunlight.  The new grass was much thinner there.  I will keep that in mind as I plant.

Lots of projects today, we’ll see what gets done.   We will get out on the water, and I think I’ll probably get into the water this trip.   My wife insists that we have some fun today.

And since it’s Mother’s Day, and she’s a mom, I guess I better do what she tells me to do….

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms.

Sat. May 7, 2022 – Ah work, I could watch it all day….

Sunny and hot, humid of course.  It’s supposed to be a very hot weekend.  Lynn has been watching the power generation numbers here in Texas, and the heat is going to drive some really high usage…  I’m kinda selfish normally, but if we are careful to reduce unneeded usage for the weekend, we’ll all have the power we need to keep cool.

I spent yesterday in the heat.   I might have spent too long in it, as I was feeling poorly by the end of the day.  I did a couple of pickups, then spent the rest of the afternoon sorting and stacking at one of my storage units.  I finished up by loading the truck for today’s run up to the BOL.

Our weekend commitments will come first, mainly swim team practice, but also lawn cutting and general weekend stuff.   Then I’ll find the last few things I need to get together for this week’s work – seeds, camping hot water heater, plumbing bits, hardware cloth, outdoor shower stuff…   wife has decided we will have an outdoor shower at the BOL until our septic situation is resolved.   Conveniently, I have a propane fired instant hot water heater stacked somewhere, as a prep against a long outage here.  I need to get it out, look at what is involved (a hose, propane tank, and shower head, presumably) and get those parts together too.

I’ll have some time in the morning to get that stuff done before we head out.

Then my comms will be spotty as before.

I’m testing out a prep this weekend, you should too.  Dig something out and use it.   Then stack whatever your test reveals that you lack….

Fri. May 6, 2022 – Don’t you.. forget about me. Don’t don’t don’t you…

Forecast for today is sunny and hot.   Last night was cool and wet.   I guess it will depend on what blows in, or through.  I need to not have rain coming down to do the things I need to do…

Yesterday the A/C guys finished about 4 in the afternoon.   Inspection should be today.   There are a couple of things I think they could have done better, but it is done, I didn’t have to do it, and I can tweak stuff as needed.  I’ve left my network rack apart until after the inspection as it lives right next to the air handler.  Better that the inspector can move and see freely.

I did a pickup, more freeze drieds.  At $50-60 per bucket, it’s not a terrible deal and it will jumpstart my BOL stock up.  I will have to add meat.

Found a few more things for the BOL house and dock.   The current plan is to head up Saturday morning, after swim team practice.   I’d rather go up this afternoon.  I’ve got a full load for the truck and a load for the wife’s minivan. SO MUCH STUFF.  And so much to do.

At least the A/C project here is mostly complete.  That is one worry off the list.  Water heater, A/C, and next needs to be the generator.  Yes, still haven’t found an electrician/install company that will come out and do it  after our friend got scared away.  If I knew I could get a propane jet kit for it, I’d take it to the BOL, and get a bigger one for this house.  But I don’t think that’s an option at this point.

I feel the pressure, but remind myself it’s a marathon not a sprint.   Except if it is a sprint, ‘cuz it does feel that way…..

Get busy with your own journey, whether sprint or leisurely stroll across the heath… and stack the stuff high.

Sun. May 1, 2022 – a day of rest. Oh, who am I kidding?

Moderate temps today with some chance of light rain.  So someone in Houston will be getting rain, I hope it’s not me.   Saturday was humid but otherwise very nice.   I am glad for the extra bit of Spring before the heat of Summer kicks in.

Did my dad duties, did some shopping for the garden and to close the wall where there water heater used to be.  Did some cleanup around the house, but really should have done more.

Wife and D1 will be home late this morning.  I’m planning to sleep in as long as possible.

Then I’ll do some more household chores and cleanup.  I should have a few minutes to dump the bags of dirt onto the raised beds and get the potted plants into the ground.  I’m going with a minimum here this spring as it’s already a bit late.  Peppers, zukes, cukes, small watermelons, and some beans if I can remember correctly.  The small pots that were $3.83 each last year are almost $5 this year.  Even the cashier at Home Depot asked me if I was sure I wanted that many plants…   But I use AMEX rewards for the garden expenses, so I was sure.   My wife already put in a couple of tomato plants, the collards are  from last year, and the herbs are either new or from last year too.  Gardening work is predicated on no or little rain of course.

I really need to get up to the lake and get the garden going.  I’ve got other stuff I need to do up there, and there are at least two pickups full of stuff waiting to go up.  The latest load includes an armchair, and a wheelbarrow, along with some long term storage food.   On the one hand, since we have a ton of work to do, we don’t want a ton of stuff in the way.  On the other, it’s piling up here, and needs to move.   On the gripping hand, I’m much more comfortable getting some back up stuff up there.

Diversification of location.  Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Supply chain is getting worse.   The shutdowns in Shanghai should start showing up in delays pretty soon.  Don’t get caught flat footed.  Stack what you need.

Sat. Apr. 30, 2022 – may go north today…

Forecast for another nice day.  Yesterday certainly was nice, although humid.   Evening was very nice.  It’s nice when it is nice out.  So nice.

Did some errands.  Picked up some stuff. Took the smaller kid to swim practice.   Talked to a septic contractor.

Today I’ll take the smaller kid to swim, then either head to the lake, or work around the house.  I really need to get up there, but there is a ton of stuff to do here too.  Having my wife and one kid out of the house makes it easier to do stuff here so I should take advantage of that, right?  Oh, and the HVAC contractor wants to look around again and get a contract signed and I’d have to be here for that.

On the other hand, not having D1 here to manage the dog means I have to do it.  That complicates going to the BOL, as he can’t be trusted not to bolt.  I did not and do not want to be one of those people who are bullied by a pet, arranging everything around that pet.  Him climbing onto the kitchen table is pretty close to the last straw.  No good solutions to this problem.

I guess we’ll just have to play it by ear.

There is always something you can be stacking, always something that will improve your position.  Find that thing, and stack it, find that thing and do it.

Sat. Apr. 16, 2022 – got my workout yesterday

Continued cool and overcast with high humidity here at the BOL.  Well, probably.   It was humid enough yesterday for three days…   We had the windows open all day but ran the A/C at night.   Really glad for A/C to knock down the humidity.  The A/C here blows cold and strong.

See yesterday’s comments for some of what I got done.   Today’s plan is trim and carpet removal, cleaning and new lights and fan in another bedroom.  I have some garden stuff to do in between.  I might do some plumbing.  There is always more on the list.

At some point we’ll head home to prep for Easter.

It’s all prepping.

Take a moment this weekend and look at what you’ve got.  Add to the stacks.

Thur. Apr. 14, 2022 – driving to BOL

Clear and comfortable today.  I hope.  Yesterday was overcast and some parts of Houston and surrounds got hammered with rain.  I never saw more than a drizzle.

Picked up a third of the pipes I went north for yesterday.   What looked like ordinary light weight fence posts turned out to be crazy heavy, schedule 80 galvanized pipe.   I only got six 10ft pipes on the truck and it was already caving in the roof.   I’ll either get a trailer for the rest, including the 20ft pipes, or have them deliver to the  BOL.   I did not know delivery was an option.  It might not be if the cost is more than renting a trailer and buying the gas.   The pipe is so heavy I might save it for the dock repairs and use pipe instead of pilings.

Today I’ve got two pickups on the way to the BOL to meet with the second opinion septic engineer.  Haven’t heard back from the first guy yet about schedule, or cost.  He’s got a reputation for good work but also for being hard to pin down.  Considering we’ll be living with the system for a long time, it makes sense to have another opinion.

So I will not be commenting or riding herd for most of the day.   I’ll likely spend the night up there, and drive home on Friday to get ready for Easter.   There I go, making plans.   Hope that doesn’t bite my backside later.

I’ve got a bunch of stuff to take up with me of course, and work to do while I’m there.  No rest for the wicked I’m afraid.

Stacking for two now, turning money into stuff.  It’s one strategy for dealing with high inflation.  Stack it up, while it’s still cheap.
