Mon. Feb. 20, 2023 – President’s Day

Cool to start but warming later?  Maybe.   Yesterday was pretty nice, sunny and warm.   Windy as Chicago until afternoon.  Decided not to burn my slash pile.

Also didn’t mow the lawn.   It would look better but I spent the time doing plumbing.    Took a while in the attic to get holes where I needed them.   Lots of belly crawling, lots of kneeling.  Lots of fiberglas.   Old boy used a kraft faced batt, and the facing is brittle and weak, so every time you touch or move it, it crumbles.   My N95 mask is filthy but my lungs are probably ok.

I didn’t buy the right sized adapter to connect to the existing tub controls, so I’ll head into town today and see if I can find what I need.  If not, I can solder on a copper to pex adapter, and leave a little stub of copper attached to the tub.  I’d prefer to do it without soldering, but if that is what it takes, well, that’s why they make that adapter.

Getting pex to the last hose bib was a challenge too.  I couldn’t get access from above, so I removed more paneling (fortunately in the bedroom closet behind the bath) and made a horizontal run, through a 90 degree bend where the walls meet… couldn’t have done that with plastic or steel pipe.  I’ll feed it from the toilet feed, and will put a valve on it.    It’s not ideal to have a valve in the closet, but there are nifty ‘snap in’ plastic access panels that will hide the mess.   As long as I get the valve in, I can turn the water back on to the toilet and tub, and worry about the hose bib later, with all the other spigots.

Getting the pex dropped into the wall for the toilet supply involved a lot of belly time, with my face down in the insulation.   I pick up yoga mats when they are cheap for just that situation.  Cardboard works too.  No matter what, it’s unpleasant and good PPEs are recommended.  Pex makes it a lot easier to do retrofit than any other system besides copper tube, and we don’t use copper tube for that anymore.

Finishing the tub/toilet/hose bib will leave just the hall bath sink, and the master bath shower on the old copper.   The sink should be straightforward if I remove the vanity.  The master shower is NOT straightforward, unless I open the wall in the bedroom.  Not looking forward to that.  That shower was replaced recently so I’m hoping the pipes are in good shape.   Yeah, I know.  Unlikely.

So today will be more plumbing.  Maybe some organizing.  And later a fire.  Hope the music is more uptempo though.

Stack some stuff and the skills to use it.

nick

Oh yeah, it was pretty clear when I started my fire, but got hazy later.   The lake was dead flat- I could see the reflection of airplane lights in it.   I did see one long shooting star before the haze got too bad.

Sun. Feb. 19, 2023 – date feels weird somehow, what am I missing?

Cool here at the BOL, and damp of course.  Yesterday was nice.   Cool and clear with some clouds.  Bit nippy in the evening.  Today should be nice.

I did a couple of errands before heading up yesterday.  Dropped in on my gun store buddy.   Helped the wife and kids get ready for 6 hours of cookie booth…   then loaded up the truck and headed out.

Didn’t get much done other than putting food away, and unloading the truck.  Didn’t really expect to with the late start.

Today should be plumbing and electrical with a side of cleaning and organizing.  I might run the mower to keep the weeds down, and the gas fresh.  Battery is probably down though, in which case, I’ll get the charger going.   I need to do the full spring service before too long.   I have all the stuff but have been putting it off.

There are some branches to collect and maybe if there isn’t much wind, I’ll try burning some of my slash pile.  Lot of burning brush piles on the way in yesterday.  Given the level of the lake, there has been a lot of rain lately.  I might need to use an accelerant.  Always a good time…

The journey of a thousand steps– yada yada.

Prep.  Improve.  Stack…

Sat. Feb. 18, 2023 – pick any two…

Cold.  Damp.  Mainly cold.   It was 35F when I went to sleep last night.  The wind had stopped but dang, that’s cold.   It was pretty nice during the day, after a chilly start, but when the nuclear furnace passes out of the local sky, temperatures started to drop, da, drop, drop…

I ended up doing my pickups.   Concrete saw looks complete and came with several blades, including one that is brand new.   If the gas engine runs it will be a great help at the BOL.  I decided to leave it at the house for now, until I get the engine running.   That’s a lot easier where I have all my tools and the internet, and stores nearby.  But that is one more gas engine on the list of stuff to look at…

Hit up Lowes for plumbing stuff.   Hit the Costco for gas ($2.75/gal vs. the Shell station at $3.19) and some food.    There were some of my staples that weren’t there, but they’d gotten some stuff that was missing last visit back into stock.   Prices were mixed.   Lamb is the same, ham is up by 50%.   Chicken is back down to ~1USD /pound for legs.   Catfish is $9/pound.  Rice is up to 80c/pound, so about 50-80% increase.   Pancake mix is now $8 up from $6.      Beef was mixed, but mostly expensive.  Canned beef was $18 for four cans.  That seems crazy high.  They had a bigger variety of coffee than they used to have, and prices weren’t crazy.   Dairy and eggs were good prices, but very low stock.   There are clearly still issues in the supply chain.

Then I got home and got dinner ready.   Decided to head out this morning instead of driving in the dark, and I hadn’t loaded up the stuff from storage yet, and it was late.

Wife and kids have cookie booths all after noon and evening.   I’ll sleep for a bit, then head out.   Plumbing awaits!

Working on the BOL is time well spent.   Further equipping it is money and effort well spent.   There is just so much to do.  Questions like “how many different forms of backup heat do I need there?”, and “will one kero heater be enough? or should I have propane Mr Heaters as backup too?”   “How many fans and electric heaters in case there is power but no propane?”  “Do I split up existing stocks or buy more just for the BOL?”   Well, you get the drift.

I thought I had big stacks.   Now I have two, but they are half the size they were…

So stack some more.   Because two is one and one is none.

regarding the post title, Good, Fast, or Cheap, Pick any two…   in my personal life I lean toward good and cheap but too often find myself picking fast and cheap.   In my previous professional life I was one of the “pros from Dover” and we definitely ran to good and fast.

Fri. Feb. 17, 2023 – standard policy of denial

Colder,  and still damp.  Not a pleasant combination when you are carrying around a bunch of damaged bits and pieces.  I’ve been moving away from cold climates since I was 20.   Yesterday was nice until about 8pm then the temp dropped.   47F when I went to bed.  Misty drizzle periodically throughout the day too.

Did three pickups, chatted with folks at two.  Both agreed that the weirdness seems to be increasing.  I think the distractions have a frantic sense to them, as they become less effective over time.  After all, we’ve gone from accepting gay marriage to cutting off kids’ genitalia and stopping them from having puberty in TEN years.  (H/T JW)  Distractions have to be pretty freaking big when the people have learned to ignore something like that.  Pretty soon a mushroom cloud over Ohio isn’t even enough.

Pay attention.   Improve your situation.  Have somewhere to go.  Avoid notice.  Pull your circle in tight.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups to do.  I bought a concrete saw to use at the BOL.  I need something to help me up there and it was cheaper than a single blade.   I hope it runs without too much trouble.   I would like to pick it up on my way out of town, it’s in the right direction, but don’t know if I’ll get the rest of my stuff done.   Not even sure if I’m headed out today or tomorrow.   I will be ‘playing it by ear’.

The list at the BOL needs some attention, and it needs it with increasing urgency.  So I will head that way and do those things.   Maybe, I’ll get the crawdad traps in the water, and I’ll get some bugs.   That would be a nice surprise.

Then I just  need to stack the butter and seasoning for the boil!

Stack it up, for all values of ‘it’.

Mon. Jan 30, 2023 – time flies

Cool and damp, getting warmer later, maybe.     National forecast has us in a rain and T storm possible zone.    I’ve got stuff to do that can’t happen in the rain, so I hope it holds off or is very regional.

Started the day yesterday at the BOL.   Rained on and off all day.  Temps came up into the 60s, but were dropping like a stone by dark.  There was a brief rainless period in the afternoon that let me get stuff inside and dried off.  Also threw a lure in the water a few times.   The lake is back to normal levels, but was murky as chocolate milk from the run off.  Fish gotta eat regardless, so I tried something bright and noisy.  No luck though.

Saw a couple of waterfowl I didn’t recognize.  I’m going to have to look them up.   Kinda goose like, kinda not.   The local fauna changes with the season, and it’s interesting watching it and learning about it.

It was a productive weekend.   Wife got a lot of stuff painted and organized/cleaned.   I got the washer plumbed in and tested.  Also got the gas line for a dryer plumbed in and tested.  The dryer that came with the house is electric, older, but doing fine.   I just figured that if I have the wall open anyway, I should put the gas line in and future proof it.  I was already wearing my PPE for attic work.  I also completed the insulation of the pex in the attic.   It’s easier to slide the foam on than to slit it and then tape the slit closed.   Since I was cutting the last big section in half to add the drops for the laundry machine, I took the opportunity to slide on the foam in both directions.

I still need to run pex for all the hall bath, the master shower, and one remaining hose bib.   And in spring I’ll need to connect the other hose bibs too.   That will be next visit, or the ones after that.  No shortage of things to do.  Nice to be crossing stuff off the list.

Hung two doors and put knobs on them…  and discovered that  I got the size wrong on the other doors.   I’ll be looking for more 32″ doors.  I’m still looking for entry doors anyway.  Between the house, shed, garage, and dock house, I need 4 entry doors in various styles.  I don’t want to pay retail for that many.  Thankfully, not an urgent project.

It’s time to start doing some network/media server/pc work up there too.   I’ve got walls open and I’m in the attic, I might as well at least pull the cat cable.   I’d like to get cameras and a nvr running up there, and an internal network even if we don’t have internet access.   It’ll be in between other projects, but cams are starting to push on my brain.  That’s usually a sign that I need to get something done.

Anyway, unless something changes, critical infrastructure FIRST, then other stuff.

And in the mean time, still working on my house, and still stacking…

Sun. Jan. 29, 2023 – rainy days, stuff happening anyway

Cool and wet, possibly COLD and wet later.   Wasn’t bad yesterday, but it was wet and gloomy.   I think we’ll get more of that today.   We got actual rain last night, not just misty drizzle like we had during the day.

I slept in, then did plumbing.   Had to McGyver a piece.   No one had the reducer I needed, but they had one with threads.   Threads I could remove with power and hand tools….     It just took longer than it should, and entailed a trip into town.   Stock at the hardware store and at Tractor Supply was wide but very shallow.   And there were big holes where they hadn’t gotten any new stock in a while.

Walmart looked pretty well stocked, but only with the stuff they have, which does not include plumbing fittings.     They had a lot of stuff on Clearance too.   I worked slow but got the drain installed.   Got the supply ready to connect today.   Turn off the water, cut the pex, insert and crimp new T fittings, turn it back on.   I love making changes to pex, it is so easy.

Still need to drop the gas line into the wall, and change out the romex to grounded 2 wire for the outlet in the wall.  Then button it all up and pack for home.

That’s the plan, but we all know about plans…

Watched “The Producers” with wife and D2 since it was raining and we couldn’t have a fire.   It was the Mathew Brodderick, Nathan Lane version and it was really good.  I love the original movie with Gene Wilder, but the new book and music (written by Mel Brooks) did a great job of freshening up the story while keeping the best parts.   The movie did a fantastic job of melding the stage action with the “film” segments to tell the story but still capture the feel of a Broadway show.   D2 is turning into a theatre geek too and laughed out loud throughout.

Stack up the good times.

Sat. Jan. 28, 2023 – and I’m at the BOL, and it’s chilly

Chilly and damp.   Was 46F when I got here yesterday, and just slightly warmer when I went to bed.  Should be the same until the sun warms the earth…

I got all the pickups done that I couldn’t reschedule or move into next week.   Nice hunting tool.   Kayak is a bit more worn than it looked in the pix, but not so bad I’m unhappy.  Other stuff is what I expected.

Hit the lowes for plumbing parts before heading up.   Spent some time last night walking through the project and discovered I need a couple more parts.   Natch.    Will have to head into  town and get them.

Got caught up with my fishing neighbor.

Played a game of Rumikub with D2 and the wife.   Read a bit.  Nice day.

Oh, and I smashed what was left of my terminal clamp into a solid bar, jammed that into a new clamp and installed the new, fat, terminal clamp in the Ranger.   Worked great.   Stacks came through.

Today I’ll be working on plumbing, and may move an electrical outlet or two.   May take a break and do something else on the list, like moving broken concrete.  Dunno, might rain according to the wife…   Flexible, that’s me.

Brought up a couple of things to add to the stacks here.   Add to yours whenever you can.   There are no indications that things are getting better.

Fri. Jan. 27, 2023 – busy day, lot’s to do…

Cold and clear, but damp.  Was cold Thursday morning, and cool most of the day.  I did take my jacket off in the afternoon.  It was 38F when I went to bed.   It’ll probably be around that to start today.

Got very little done on my list yesterday.   Did have a lovely  lunch with a reader.  Long chat took up most of my afternoon, and that was an excellent way to spend the day.   It does mean I have a few more things to do today though.

Like a whole bunch of pickups scattered all over the place.   I’m going to delay one to Monday for sure, ask about delaying another that is way down south, and hopefully just get one in the neighborhood, and two that are on the west side.  I’ve got a list of stuff I need to get at lowes too, which I probably should have gotten yesterday.

Plan is to head up to the BOL later today, catching a pickup in Conroe on the way.   That’s gonna take actually leaving the house, and running around all day.  Wife and kids will follow after school/work.

Then the work begins!   I still have plumbing to do to get the laundry machine drain and supply connected, and as long as the wall is open, I need to get the gas line in too for the dryer.  Even if I don’t connect it to the manifold yet, getting it into the wall is important.   Wife and kids will be painting.  And if I run out of plumbing, I can hang doors, or change out light fixtures, or any of the other things on the list…

The day starts with getting the wife and kids out the door.  So that’s first.  Then I’ll start my running around.

I’m stacking things.   Mostly at the BOL, but I am stacking… you should too.

Tues. Jan. 24, 2023 – same old, but more…

Cold again, and clear, but windy.   It was pretty chilly yesterday whenever the sun wasn’t hitting me.  And it got very unpleasant around 7pm.   It’s not quite as bone chilling at midnight, but cold enough to promise cold for today.

I did a small repair to my Ranger.  Swapped some parts from the parts truck to the driver.  The plasticized “rubber” over the cruise control buttons fails and crumbles.   I’ve replaced them with NOS once, and now with the ones that have been sitting in the donor vehicle for the last few years.   They are already failing, but I soaked them with silicone spray.   It seems to help, for a while.

Did some ‘domestic bliss’ (cleaning up around the house, laundry, shopping, etc.)

Got the CO2 pistol out and did some target shooting in the yard.   It’ll put holes in stuff, and dent sheet metal.   I remember meaning to do a lot more work with the airguns, but then we bought a BOL…   was nice to do some trigger pull work.

Collards made it through the freeze and cold spell, nothing else did though.   Time to start planning for gardens, here and at the BOL.

Bid on some pavers for the BOL.  Didn’t win them.  They would have made a good short term solution for hardscape around the house after I remove all the broken concrete.   They went for more than I was willing to pay.  Something else will come up.

Today is a trash run, and auction pickups.  If I can, I’ll drop some stuff off at my auctioneer.  That will clear some space at the house and in the storage unit.  That would be a Good Thing ™.

I’ll be stacking some stuff, and organizing, and generally getting ready.   All y’all should be doing the same.

Tues. Jan. 17, 2023 – what to do, what to do….

Cool but damp.  Maybe sunny and warmer later.   I hope so.    It was very nice most of the day at the BOL.  Started a bit dreary, with a sprinkle of rain, but cleared and got sunny in the afternoon.  Here in Houston it was 66F when I went to bed.

I did get a bunch of small things done at the BOL.   Main thing was capping off the supply to the clothes washer, and opening the wall to figure out what I need to add a trap to the drain line, and to pull in the water and gas lines.   I will move that up the list for the next visit.   I really need to get OFF the copper water lines.

Today I’m at home and there are piles of stuff to do.   Which thing gets tackled first is the question of the day.   Knock off some small things, or tackle something big?   I guess it will come down to how I feel at the moment.   Stuff needs doin’, and I need to do stuff.   Match made in heaven?

I know I’ll be adding to the stacks or working on them…   you should too.
