Hot, but maybe the front will make it just a bit not as hot? It was certainly hot yesterday before the rain came with the front. Lots of thunder, lots of local lightning strikes. Much drama. Not much rain though. We’ll see how today shapes up.
Did my pickup. The gantry crane will be useful for my truck repairs. The cameras turned out to be analog and nothing I want to spend time messing with. Did my normal returns auction pickup too. Didn’t do much else.
Today I’ve got another surplus pickup to do. I got a bunch more of the roll around laptop cart things from the hospital, so I’ll break those down for scrap, inverters, and batteries. I also got a bunch of open frame telcom racks sold as scrap that I’ll bring to the next hamfest. Racks usually sell well for me. And if not, they are aluminum C channel, and could be re-purposed or scrapped. IDK if I can get everything in one trip, but I’ll know after I try today! I’ve still got tomorrow if I have to make a second trip.
And in order to make room for this stuff, I have to continue my organization and clean out of my shop. Which will be sweaty and tedious. But hey, they call it ‘work’ not ‘playing around’.
Always be working… and stacking.

Good morning!
Teaching again today, last lecture before the students get a couple of weeks to work on projects. Hey, sometimes you get pleasant surprises! One guy I had in a course 1-1/2 years ago. Surly, uncooperative. This time, he’s a star student! Dunno what happened, but it’s nice to see š
Pretty crazy prices everywhere, but they aren’t going down. Thanks, Trump, for making Iran aware of just how much power they have over global fuel markets. Now that Yemen is copying them, well, we’re in for interesting times.
There is no way that those two straits will ever go back to “normal”. I suppose the greenies are going to be happy, because this will force a faster transition to alternatives.
Yep. Taking a step back, I think the larger problem is that there are too many transport options. Scooters with no power. Scooters with power. Bicycles with and without. Electric motorbikes, small and large. All this in addition to pedestrians, motorcycles, cars and trucks.
Some of these mix with pedestrians, some mix with normal traffic. In all cases, there is a huge mix of speeds, of ages, of driver training. It’s a mess, and there is no easy way to clean it up.
I am particularly annoyed by the electric scooters. Some of them are huge and fast. The riders (usually young teens) slalom through crowds of pedestrians on their way to school. They are the “macho” option for kids too young to drive.
Now look at the racial and sexual breakdown of the MAID deaths vs those of the Canadian population.
Maids have turned violent in the Canadian Paradise? Why could they be so unhappy?
āTaking a step back, I think the larger problem is that there are too many transport options. Scooters with no power. Scooters with power. Bicycles with and without. Electric motorbikes, small and large. All this in addition to pedestrians, motorcycles, cars and trucks.ā
Complexity increases as the number of streams with varying speeds and rights-of-way. Certainly more than linear. Is it a power function, geometric, or a blend?
It used to be bad enough having cars and bicycles on the same roads, with most of the bicycles running stop sugns, switching between car lanes and bike lanes at will without signals, and ignoring crosswalk signals.
Remember kids, unlike Old Guy, the troll comes here just for the argument, especially about theological subjects.
With not one but two āBible as literatureā classes going onto his CV during the 2025-26 academic year at God Forsaken Blue State U, he’s going to be coming here for exchanges he won’t get in the faculty lounge from the tenure track DEI hires. Don’t take the bait.
Not that he earned the money for that new Subie in the driveway ⦠cough ⦠but at least make him earn the insurance payments.
MAID is voluntary.
ā There have been too many stories alleging that it is not. And encouraging it rather than more costly treatments has been the predicted outcome of state paid healthcare for a long time.

The vast majority of deaths from āgun violenceā in the US are really from āGANG violenceā and as such are mostly voluntary as well, from one perspective, with a squint and a head tilt.

ā again, from a core ideological standpoint, NO! The urge to control and restrict must be resisted!
If anything, tariff the hell out of them to make the cost higher to discourage them. Anything sold in parking lots is illegal 99% of the time, so they’re already breaking laws just with their import.
The situation will sort itself out. Remember mopeds? Minibikes? The 50cc scooters?
The Segway was going to āchange the nature of transportation.ā Nope.

This is an excellent result. Every supporter of blue city government and teacher unions should be required to enroll their children in public schools.
Wasn’t The Jesus Truck supposed to do that as well?
And by āJesus Truckā, I’m not limiting the category to Tony’s debacle Cybertruck. Tommy Boy’s Lightning and the crab walking Hummer disaster for GM should be considered too.
Remember that Super Bowl commercial with the Lightning powering the whole house in a power failure, much to the delight of the stacked MILF in the tight sweater?
The marketplace worked ⦠sorta ⦠with the Jesus Truck, but Stellantis paid for Tony’s R&D.
BTW, that reminds me — I saw a *new* Charger V6 cop car driven by one Wilco Sheriff’s deputy last weekend, but those cost $60k now rather than the mid $30s for the modified V8 saloon in the before times.
The bond ghouls will feast well in Texas.
āThe urge to control and restrict must be resisted!ā
Depends on what you mean. Do you disagree with licensing and insurance requirements? Does equity not require that all vehicles have license and insurance? Do you think is is safe or equitable to give non-autos presumptive rights which they somehow retain despite wholesale disregard of the rules of the road? If unlicensed and uninsured minors operate vehicles is there any reason that parents should not have absolute liability?
Her daughter appears to have some potential. Would homeschooling enable her to catch up, or is her education a lost cause? What, if anything, can be done?
I don’t think so, Tim.
It started out as voluntary, rare, so people in the last stages of their terminal illness could skip the last few days or weeks of a painful death. A release of sorts.
Now, it’s just a treatment choice on your Chinese or Indian or Paki doctor’s list, and he doesn’t like your kind anyway. The latest high profile case is a grandma who didn’t even understand what treatment was being offered by her doctor who didn’t share her language. Following just a week after they killed a toddler. People with depression are offered a choice of weeks waiting for a counselor, or MAID right now.
But it saved money for the Canadian healthcare system. All those messy, whiny white people wanting to bother the doctors and nurses.
Remember those old days when we were told we were silly for believing death panels would happen? Now the whole panel is one foreign doctor.
Your MBBS will see you now.

@drwilliams, remember that the whole licensure and registration and insurance web slowly came to life and grew like a fungus in the dark. We existed without them. We could exist without them again.
The urge to regulate and control led to the current situation. I’ve got MANDATORY (under threat of force) required insurance, but I still have to carry and pay for āuninsured motoristā coverage. But insurance is mandatory⦠it’s a burden, a cost, a friction on my life, that is completely ignored by others anyway, who have no fear of the consequences.
Why do we have municipal parking meters? Do We the People not own the streets collectively? Did we vote to voluntarily subject ourselves to taxation out of the goodness of our hearts? When will the matter be up for a vote on its continuation?
We āownā our vehicles, but can’t use them without paying the state, paying the cartel for insurance – at the demand of the state, paying to protect ourselves from those who choose not to pay anywayā¦. We’re sheep to be shorn. THAT’S what you get with control and restriction.
n
You can use your vehicle all you want without paying. What you are paying for is infrastructure maintenance. You are paying to drive on the roads. Yes, the roads are public. But if choose to not drive, why should I pay for the roads? Those that use the roads are paying for the use of the roads. Heavier vehicles, such as trucks, pay more for the use of the roads as they cause more
wear and teardamage. If there were no parking meters, people would camp out for days in the same spot leaving no place to park for others. The demand for free good is infinite and charging for parking tends to limit that demand.
Where I have an issue is the University of TN campus. Parking is free in all city, county, and state-owned parking garages, including metered spaces on the street, for VA disabled license plates. But not on the UT campus, which is state owned property. UT, along with the other state-owned universities in the state have managed to exempt themselves from that little rule.
If a person is caught driving without insurance the penalties should be severe. Financially painful. I don’t like subsidizing the negligence of others.
First offense is paying one year of premiums as a fine and acquiring an insurance policy in the high-risk pool. The second offense is two years of premiums plus 25% of the cost of the premiums and a new policy in the high-risk pool. The third offense is confiscation of the vehicle regardless of who owns the vehicle, two years’ worth of premiums, and loss of license for one year. Fourth offense tacks on a mandatory one year in prison and an additional two years of premiums as a fine. Fifth offense is 10 years in prison.
Our property taxes pay for roads, as do fuel taxes, and income taxes redistributed by the fedgov. TOLLS pay for roads. Cities pay for roads to encourage the presence of businesses (which they tax) and residents (whom they tax.)
LOTTA taxes before you get to registration stickers. The little village I grew up in had their own registration requirement, beyond the State of Illinois’ requirement.
I’ve paid a lot more in auto insurance than I’ve received. Not that long ago, I’d have been able to take that gamble, or self insure, or buy extra. We get restricted more and more every decade.
I’d like it to stop. I’d like the default reaction to not be more restriction.

Fall Equinox today.
Back is better, not up to real yard work yet but maybe by this weekend, and wow, what a mess out there – the weeds are going nuts after our little front passed through!
I did finally re-hang the floating bookshelf that collapsed a while back. The brackets that were advertised on Amazon for bookshelves were not what I wanted, but then it occurred to me to look at closet shelf brackets, and those are very sturdy and not unnecessarily fancy. I used the included #8 x 1.5 screws, but may replace them with #10’s: I don’t have the X/Motif library up there, but there are a number of programming books with high clay content pages.
Yes.
One claim today would wipe that fund dry, and then some. Runaway juries with awards well in to six figures. A wreck is now the equivalent of a winning lottery ticket if it gets to a jury.
I have probably paid an average of $1,500 a year in auto insurance. Multiply that by 60 years and it only comes to $90K. Damage a couple of cars, some medical, pain and suffering, would well exceed $90K.
I pay about $2K a year in homeowners insurance for really good coverage. A fire now would be a $400K claim. For the 50 years I have owned a home that is only $100K, significantly less than a claim.
You may not have gotten back what you paid, but one claim would rapidly change that.
Property taxes pay for police, public buildings, libraries, city and county workers.
Do you really want the civil engineers, doctors, pharmacists etc. to not be certified as qualified? A barber does not need a license, but a beautician does because of the chemicals. A butcher needs a license to protect the food supply. An electrician and plumber need to be certified. A guy that mows lawns, nope. Some professions need some way to let others know they are qualified. Anyone that does things for others needs insurance in case they harm their client or the clients property.

I’ve said this before and I will say it again. The European colonists trying to get Ukraine to take out Russia are responsible for the majority of the world’s shortage of diesel. Pure and simple, any honest analysis will tell you that. When the Ukrainians damaged 38 of Russia’s 40 refineries using buzz bombs modeled on the WW II German V-1 buzz bombs, they shut down the majority of the diesel fuel on the world’s spot market. This was intentional and a plea for more money and weapons for the Ukrainians, besides causing serious damage to Russia’s infrastructure and cash flow.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-1_flying_bomb
War is hell and this Russia – Ukraine conflict is approaching a million KIAs. The effects are spreading and other people are taking advantage of it. Such as the Iranians before the USA and Israel shut them down.

Money is fungible.
And the funding picture is muddied because of federal money going to states and local and state money going to local. And because of various chargebacks or mandatory spending. In fact, the picture is muddied enough that the cynical among us might even suspect that the muddying is deliberate.
I still haven’t pulled the trigger on a fuel run. Or a nap, leaving me out of compliance with the Font of Wisdom. I did compact the trench with my 2006 Sierra Lawn Compactor, and then refill the depression with more dirt. During this, I also became a wildlife rescuer. I uncovered 5 small garter snakes which had nested in the mound I was excavating. It only seemed fair to move them to the communal den under the concrete porch pad on the front of the house, so they could rejoin the colony. I left them at the entrance and they all went in with no hesitation. I’m pretty sure that’s the den they were hatched in.
I also gave the front panel of the lawn it’s second āfinal haircut for the yearā. Hopefully that’s the last of that. And there’s only two more project / parts vehicles to move.

Regarding āmRNA shots, which have been demonstrated to contain cancer-causing DNAā, you linked an article citing a study finding residual amounts of the SV40 promoter/enhancer sequence in BioNTech samples (but not in Moderna samples as you claimed). Well. I don’t have any evidence. But I do know that when I was in grade school the few retards had their own classes. Just a guess, but the Pokemon market is beyond insane right now.
Don’t some states already do that? I have never understood how some interstates, built with government funds, are now toll roads.
I got a bill from West Virginia for traveling on a tolled interstate. All of $0.89. I paid with a credit card, which charges a minimum of $0.50 per transaction. I was not going to spend $0.81 on a stamp to pay a $0.89 toll. Considering the cost of the stamp and the CC charges, the tolling authority lost money on that deal. I would think that any toll charges for a month, under $2.00, would just be written off. Or passed on to the next month. After a year, if no additional charges, write it off.
Picked this up today. It’s meant to make my Ranger bed swap easier.
https://www.garvee.com/products/garvee-adjustable-gantry-crane-with-manual-pls-339mtqqj
Paid $175. It was returned because one welded part was put together wrong. The bottom of the A frame had the holes for the central support oriented horizontally instead of vertically. It took about 10 minutes and a step drill to re-drill them in the correct orientation. Anyone using a gantry crane for work should be able to figure out the problem and drill 4 holes. But instead they returned it. They kept the trolley, slings, and hooks though, because they’re scumbag thieves.
n
Some parts of the Interstate Highway System were tolled from the beginning. They weren’t entirely funded by fedgov money. States had to pay, and have to provide upkeep, iirc.
Some of the tolled segments were supposed to have the tolls phased out.
n
No, this did not happen. Currently, the Netherlands is the only country I am aware of that allows euthanasia for children (previously under 1 year, or over 12 years but that changed to include all children in 2024) and they recently euthanized a child in that range. The age and illness of the child was not released.
HOWEVER, doctors have begun to lobby for a change to Canadian law to allow child euthanasia. Leftists, amirite?
I think it was here that I commented that the āPatriarchyā was established to encourage/enforce care of children, starting with the elites and working down, to make sure everybody got in the habit. āWomen and children firstā existed for a reason, and it was a direct outcome of the patriarchal enforcement of child care. Feminist extremists have demonstrated that they are the antithesis of patriarchy, and this is another branch of that vine. Kill your children until they’re born and call it autonomy, and now, after, with the support of the medical profession and the government and call it medicine. At this point I’m not sure that that cancer of the soul can be cured, or if the cure will be worse than the disease. But anyone killing their children, with or without medical or government support, is gravely mentally ill. Perhaps MAID should be expanded to specifically address that mental illness, and allow the other parent, or grandparents of the child involved to volunteer them for it. I’d be OK with that.
I seem to remember that I-20 between Dallas and Ft. Worth at one time was a toll road. Way back in the ’70s. I seem to remember paying a toll on that road as I had to get reimbursed for the toll. Getting a receipt from the toll booth the person acted like I was some kind of weirdo. The last time I was on that road there were no tolls.
None of the interstate should be tolled. If the road has an āI-ā designation there should be no tolls. Florida is the worst. Driving along and suddenly there is a toll booth. What? Where? Why? I don’t remember seeing any signs that I was getting on a toll road. On the return trip, yeh, there were signs. Small ones, mingled among direction and road signs. Right lanes, on a four-lane highway. Deliberately designed to be difficult to view and get to the single left lane to avoid the tolling road.
Then bring in Texas. With what seems to me to be a half dozen different tolling authorities although I don’t know the real number. Some places it seems that one tolling authority gets the first part of the road, another tolling authority gets the last part. And confusing signs in the tolled area. For locals it probably makes sense.
I did get one toll bill from Florida for $2.50. When I got the bill I called the tolling authority, told them I had tossed 8 quarters in the bin, did not get a green light, and just drove through. They said, OK, forget the bill. Sometimes foreigners toss in foreign coins that jam the machine.
Another time I got on a toll road, and it was intentional. When I got to the exit the toll booth was not staffed. All I had was a $20.00 bill. I just drove through. Lesson learned. When driving in Florida have a couple rolls of quarters. Something the locals probably know quite well.
I’ll admit to some envy. That would have made many jobs easier, and and would enable some that I can’t manage at all for the time being.

I-30, the DallasāFort Worth Turnpike, between Dallas and Fort Worth was a toll road, I-20 was not. I-30 was toll from 1957 to 1977. It may be the only toll road in the USA that was paid off and converted to free.

MAID is voluntary. Homicide isnāt.
You know, I’ve just got to wonder. How many of the recipients thought that they were getting free maid service and got murdered instead?
California’s Golden Gate Bridge was supposed to become toll-free after the bridge was paid for. When that happened, they instituted a new and HIGHER toll, and that toll kept increasing every few years. So they may have PROMISED to eliminate the tolls, but that is ALWAYS a lie.

One of the neighbors has an autistic kid who is 15 now. He may have an IQ of 75. He is only five foot tall at most and constantly swings in the front yard on two tree swings that his dad put in. His dad told me the other day that they expect him to live with them all their lives, the doctors think that their son is locked at 8 years or so.
His dad knows that we have a daughter age 39 living with us and asks us how it is, I try to soften things and not tell the bad times. But she is not autistic, she is brain damaged from strokes. She has at least an intellectual ability of 39 years but the emotional age of 5.

VDOT sold the HOV lanes on I-395, I-495, and I-95 to an Australian company, Transurban, who converted that section of the roads into bi-directional express lanes.
The revenue from the toll roads funds Australian and Canadian pensions.
Transurban is also pushing similar express lanes north out of Charlotte on I-77 into the western part of Virginia so they must have a deal with North Carolina as well.
Texas has a private toll road, SH-130, but that hasn’t been as lucrative as the builders envisioned.
There’s this recent video on YouTube, and a couple of people sent me the link. It’s something like āWhy [hobbyname] clubs are dyingā. So I watched it.
My hobby club Board of Directors started a discussion on this. I was the first to summarize it in a few sentences, and pointed out it gives reasons but no solutions.
Another BOD member who hates AI slop noticed that it was AI slop, and instead of watching it, he used another AI to summarize it, which was actually quite clever.
He also pointed out in his email that my summary of the video pretty much matched ChatGPT’s summary. So my intelligence level is: Artificial.

ā this is also why I finally just bought one when it came up. It’ll let me get stuff in and out of the truck without killing myself to do it, or doing some really risky shite.
I’ve been thinking about how I could fake it out of stuff I have on hand, but my auction mojo kicked in and there it was. Perfect timing.

Tiny little fire, and one tiny little possum⦠no aviation at all. Weird the ebb and flow of that.
The āwater featureā really does act as a watering hole for the local semi-domesticated wildlife. It’s fun to see them walk by and take a drink. I guess that even though we got a little rain, it might still be hard to find accessible water, outside of the concrete channelized bayous.
No gunshots either. The constable patrol has stepped up the frequency of driving down our street since the gunshot/group of kids episode. I think it’s a bit of closing the barn door, but it is nice to see them anyway.
