Hot and humid is the uniform of the day. Dress it up any way you want but Houston in Summer is pretty much the same. Rain, or no rain, it’s still hot and humid. We did get a smattering of drops yesterday while I was out but I think they were very localized. Some black sky threatened from the south, but nothing ever happened.
I did my pickups. Took longer than I hoped so I didn’t get to the Habitat reStore. I’ll go there today. Came home and did auction stuff for a couple hours. Didn’t cook any dinner. I’ll have some stuff to take with me to the BOL next week.
Today I’ll see if the reStore has any windows that will work for my project at the BOL. If not, it will change how much I want to get done, and might change my priorities up there. If yes, it will commit me to this next big project until we’re weathertight again. Oh well, nothing I’m not already familiar with. Go big or go home.
I’ve been stacking, now I guess I’ll be working…

I’m awake. Have been for an hour. Not sure why. Not happy about it. Wondering if this is a good reason to test out the Earthdestroy-inator I made and then put in the drawer when I went on to another project.
(The kids’ cartoon “Phineas and Ferb” had the typical inept villain whose inventions were all called whatitdoes-inator. I never watched the show myself but all of my kids did, the teen boys for the jokes worked into the dialog and the kindergardener for the slapstick nonsense, so I picked up a little.)
Thursday. Good morning!
Megaproject abides. I worked until eleven pm, restarted at five-thirty am. Short of sleep, and commensurately grumpy with it. Weather forecast is for over 30C today, so that won’t help much.
At least had a wee chortle about Erdogan’s revolvers and D1’s TP. I wonder what President Trump did with his (revolver, not TP…)?
Have a lovely day!
Mornin’, SteveF! Might need that Earthdestroy-inator myself.
At least the bakery had fresh croissants and baguette when I called by again after they opened. I mightn’t actually use the destroyinator. I wonder if there is any Dubliner cheese left in the fridge…? Food might improve the mood.
The original run of “Phineas and Ferb” was extremely clever.
The Mouse had quite a run with Disney Channel original programming from the late 90s until ~ 2010.

Instead of mowing the meadow with my weed whacker, I borrowed a neighbor’s “Balkenmäher” – dunno what you call it in English – mower with a cutter bar? What the farmers use, anyway, only a small version.
What an absolute piece of animal excrement.
The handle was poorly attached to the machine, so steering was difficult to begin with. The cutting bar stalled out anytime it hit a grass clump, and you had to forcefully jerk the machine out of the clump and try again. My hands and wrists are killing me from fighting the darned thing.
I either need to find a better machine for next year, or go back to the weed whacker. I usually use a metal blade, not a thread, so it works a treat – it just takes a long time, because it cuts such a narrow swath. The mower was faster, despite everything, but just not worth the price in frustration and wrist pain.
We would normally toss the cuttings over the fence to the field below, when the local farmer harvests it for hay. But the farmer is in the hospital, and no one is caring for his fields. So I’ll haul it off to the town’s “green waste” disposal. A shame – it’s fine enough feed – but what else can I do?
I took the sons to see Prisoner of Azkaban in the theater. It must have been bad, or else I was very far from the target audience, because I remember absolutely nothing of those couple hours except for the werewolf transformation scene, and that only because the younger son got scared and jumped into my lap and knocked me out of my stupor.

We ordered a new refrigerator over July 4 at Home Depot. LG model. There were really good sales, $3400 marked down to $2199 with an additional $200 off for some reason, with free delivery.
We have a working unit, sort of. It is a Samsung and the ice maker keeps clogging up with ice. I have to chip out the ice to get it working again. Generally, every 10-14 days. No appliance repair places would work on the Samsung out of warranty. I found one place that will only do warranty work but once the warranty is up, they will not work on Samsung refrigerators. The ice maker problem is a known issue on Samsung. Our friends have a Samsung with the same problem.
The new refrigerator was supposed to be delivered today between 8:00 and 12:00. We got a call at 7:30 that the delivery guys would be here in 15 minutes. A scramble to get everything prepared.
The delivery guys arrived. There were two options, up the steps into the front door, or around back through the sliding glass door. They chose the sliding glass door but had to remove the bottom two drawers on the unit and open the top doors and “butterfly” the unit into the house. The delivery guy asked if I wanted a new hose to the ice maker, braided, and a new valve, at no cost. Strange because Home Depot wanted to charge me $18.00 for hose and valve. I said no because I had a copper line with a shutoff already.
I asked if they could move the old refrigerator to the garage. They said no because I had not paid for removal. I offered him $20.00 and I won’t tell Home Depot. They said OK.
In talking with them I found out they only get paid $12.00 for the delivery. A lot of work for $12.00. I felt better about the $20.00. I gave them an extra $10.00, all I had left. In talking with them I found out they get paid $24.00 for installing the valve, and another $12.00 for the hose. Once I found that out I told them to install the hose and the valve.
We knew going in that this new refrigerator was 1″ taller than our current refrigerator. It sits under a cabinet, just barely. That required the wife and I to remove the cabinet, disassemble the cabinet (fortunately it was screws and not glue), cut the sides and back pieces, then reassemble and install. We needed help with the install as the cabinet is big and bulky, and somewhat heavy being built of 3/4″ spruce plywood.
The doors still have to be trimmed. They are solid Oak with cherry stain.
The old refrigerator we will give away to the neighbor across the street. He just wants the refrigerator part and could not care less about ice making.
I finally have working hearing aids again. June 4 one of the hearings quit, solid red light while in the charger. Off to the VA clinic who had to send the device off for repair. June 12 the device has returned and I head to the clinic again. Now the other hearing aid is doing the what the other unit did, solid red light in the charger. The VA gives me the repaired unit and sends the other unit off for repair. June 26 the VA calls and says the device is back so off to the clinic. I get there and all they have is the earpiece, not the electronic unit. I have live, somewhat annoyed. Later that afternoon they call and say the unit has arrived. Great. But the clinic only has an opening on July 6.
32 days without working hearing aids. I was not happy. I asked to speak with a supervisor, who of course was not available. Later on July 6 the Audiologist calls me and asks what the issue was. I explained and she said that was not acceptable. I now have an appointment on September with the audiologist. The audiologist is the only one that can decide on replacing the hearing aids. I am going to have my hearing retested to get another profile generated for the devices. The audiologist will also order me new hearing aids and I keep the current pair for backup.
This is the fourth time in 3.5 years I have had issues with the hearing aids. That is enough problems that the audiologist feels the devices should be replaced with new technology. The audiologist also stated the VA has had many issues with Phonak and I would be getting a different brand.

The new refrigerator has an option to link to supporting power companies to reduce energy consumption during high demand. How cute. My power does not support that as far as I know. Regardless, I turned it off. The power company has installed a box that controls the power to my pool pump and water heater. It used to work but it had a problem and shut off the power and would not turn the power back on. The utility was here within an hour to replace the logic board. The system has never activated since then and I, being of sound mind, have not told the power company. I think the power company did not properly record the serial number, device ID, or whatever is used to associate the box with my account and still have the numbers. Not my problem.

“The ADDW system uses an infrared camera mounted inside the cabin to monitor the driver’s eye gaze and head position. According to the regulation, if the driver looks away from the road for more than six seconds at speeds between 20 and 50 km/h, the system must issue a warning. Above 50 km/h, the allowed time shrinks to three and a half seconds [2]. The warnings are visual, reinforced by sound or vibration, and escalate in intensity if distraction persists, according to the regulation.”

“Going Ballistic (Combined Operations #1)” by Dorothy Grant
https://www.amazon.com/Going-Ballistic-Combined-Operations-Dorothy/dp/B09G9GD4QG?tag=ttgnet-20
Book number one of a four book science fiction series. I read the well printed and well bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback self published by the author in 2021 that I bought on Amazon in 2026. I have purchased the following three books in the series.
Captain Michelle Lauden is a ballistic pax (passenger) airplane pilot on a colony world far in the future. While she is landing her ballistic airplane transporting her passengers from one state of the colony to another state, unbeknownst to her, the arriving state secedes from the Federation and joins the Imperium. At the new state, Captain Lauden hurries to get to her next ballistic airplane and uses an shortcut, bypassing the terminal and the new security protocols. And she picks up some special passengers going to the new airplane with her.
The story is very fast paced and the characters are extremely likable. The history of the colony world and the various political entities is not explained very well but that was not necessary for the story to be good.
The author’s husband has a very active website where he promotes his books and her books at:

My F-150 does this when using the BlueCruise feature. If I turn my head for more than a few seconds, the system beeps and I get a warning on the screen. Which is irrelevant to me anymore as I refuse to renew the subscription, at $500.00 a year. On my 2,400 mile round trip to Texas in March, I only used BlueCruise for perhaps 10 minutes so that I could stretch. That hardly seems worth what Ford wants to charge.
My Ford Maps subscription has also expired. I am not paying that subscription. The map system in the Ford is inferior to Garmin, Google Maps and Apple Maps as all three are superior to the Ford system. I will use those systems instead of the Ford system. The c-suite clowns at Ford are not living in reality.
And in other news. I downloaded the App for LG, the maker of my refrigerator. Apparently there is a firmware update, three of them in fact, for the refrigerator. What ever happened to a simple thermostat, where the refrigerator runs, or it doesn’t it? Now it’s control boards that when they fail are $500.00 for the part and $200.00 for labor. The refrigerator in the basement apartment is 30 years old, simple control, still works, the drinks I keep in the box are cold, the freezer is frozen. But hey, no automatic ice maker, water and ice in the door, multiple settings for each compartment, and it doesn’t phone home. Two doors, one for the refrigerator, one for the freezer. It just works.
I also discovered that there is now ice in the lower freezer, in a tray. Previously unknown to me, beyond just ice in the door, apparently ice is made, and kept in the lower pull-out drawer.
The new Highlander will be here on the 17th, we will pick it up on the 21st. I have the owner’s manual. Lot of bells and whistles, including a digital rearview mirror that uses the tailgate camera. What I really want, and is not an option, is a high-powered laser, facing towards the rear, powerful enough to pierce holes in radiators of those that tailgate. And 100,000 lumens led rear facing light for those that insist on using high beams all the time.

Wait, when your Bluecruise subscription lapses, does your cruise control still work? And the lane maintain / other safety features?
Yeah, Ford maps suck compared to Google maps. And so do Ford engines. I am taking my 2019 F-150 in next week to get the cam phasers and timing chain replaced for $7,000 at 64,600 miles, just past the 6 year / 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. Plus a $900 transmission 60,000 servicing.
My next truck may be a Toyota Tundra. At least they stand behind their failed engines.

“The bizarre event has captured the attention of the global internet, which has been surprised to learn that a relatively small clique of anonymous “administrators” apparently wields such irresistible authority that a founder of the site could be abused for three days and then banned, as so many thousands had been before.”
Definitely bizarre.

“Family Pets Are Overlooked Victims Of Affordability Crisis”
https://dailycaller.com/2026/07/09/opinion-family-pets-are-overlooked-victims-of-affordability-crisis-jon-schweppe/
“The number one reason a sick dog or cat goes untreated in America is the price of treatment. This reality should bother anyone with a leash hanging on the door or a pooper scooper in the closet. By one industry estimate, caring for a dog over its lifetime now runs about $35,000, and the cost of caring for a cat isn’t far behind. One cat owner told CBS News her routine vet visit doubled from $50 to $100, and her first month with a new cat, who turned out to be epileptic, cost nearly $1,000. According to one study, 22 percent of pet owners are carrying more than $2,000 in pet debt.”
“Paws Chicago, one of the largest no-kill shelters in the country, reports a 28 percent increase in pet surrenders this year and cites medical costs as a factor. That tracks with previous American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) research, which found most owners surrendering pets did so because they couldn’t afford or access medical care. For young families already squeezed by the cost of housing, groceries, and childcare, the family dog is quickly becoming a luxury good.”
Oh my.
BTW, I forgot to mention that we are getting dogs and cats dumped in our neighborhood constantly. People drive through, open a door, and throw the animal out. Horrible.
Toyota is being very selective about replacing the dual turbo V6 engines.
Dynamic Cruise Control still works as does lane departure assist. Lane departure uses the front camera to read the lines on the road. I had one incident, on a right hand curve on the I-state, where an exit existed, where lane departure wanted to quickly take the exit. Yeh, it was an exciting few seconds.
The other safety features still seem to work without issue. Of course, my subscription expired just about three days ago so I don’t know if the truck has gotten the signal from the mother ship.
Write a nasty gram to Ford headquarters. Tell them unless Ford stands behind the product, with a known defect, your next vehicle will be a Toyota. As will your friends and two of your enemies.
I had an issue with my Astro van that was out of warranty. The rear axle seals leaked and the speed sensor crapped out. A $2K repair. I wrote Chevy and pitched a fit with a letter to the CEO. Chevy covered the repair.
Years ago I had a Ford Pinto, rather the wife had a Ford Pinto before we got married and it came along with the rest of the baggage. The cooling fan threw a blade. It cut the radiator hose and busted the fan shroud. I replaced the parts myself, complained to the NHTSA and wrote a nasty gram to Ford. Ford reimburse me for all the parts.
I hated that Pinto. You sat low to the ground so it was not easy getting in and out. It also made looking over the hood seem like the thing was 30 feet long.
The gas tank issue was fixed during the recall. The A/C, rather than cycling the compressor, used a bleed valve to maintain temperature. That car would get really cold even in Texas. On a trip from San Antonio to Dallas, on a humid summer evening, when we got to Dallas the steering would only turn right part way without grinding. Hmm. Checked in the right front wheel well and the receiver dryer was a huge block of ice that was blocking the wheel.
The engine was SAE, all the other stuff mounted on the engine was metric. Picking the correct socket or wrench was a guess, usually wrong.
That huge back window would roast the interior of the vehicle. We had to have that tinted.
That is part of the reason I got rid of my 2014 F-150. I had 150K miles on the vehicle and according my mechanic those twin turbo eco-boost engines started having problems after 150K miles.
I just spent $180 last Thursday getting a possible UTI checked on our cat.
Nothing. My wife wondered if maybe the cat got into some lantana and simply had an upset stomach.

The lack of reliability and all the motor control boards on new fridges are for energy saving. Dual inverter blah blah blah. And you need LED drivers, sensing, a micro to process the switch presses, control over the heater for the defrost cycle, clocks for the filter timers, etc and that’s before any ‘connected’ nonsense. All in the name of holy ghaiaaaaa while reducing lifespan so the whole thing ends up in a land fill in 5-7 years instead of thirty, with no recoverable materials, and all the embodied energy lost.
It’s sickening really.

Hi, folks! An update on my PC woes.
My PC crashed 10 days ago shortly after selecting the “Extend windows 10 support” option. After that, it was freezing up after 4-5 minutes. So after beating my head against a rock for this problem, I did the “restore PC and retain files”. That worked pretty well. So after that, I did an hour’s worth of Windoze Updates, and once again, selected the “Extend Windows 10 support”. And about 5 minutes later, this NEWLY RESTORED system locked up AGAIN. So today, I restored my system and did NOT do ANY windows updates, and everything has been running nicely.
Except, Windows says my license isn’t activated. So I dug out my old Windows 8 Pro license, and tried to activate it, and it won’t accept it. I originally bought it running Win8 Home, bought a license for Win8 Pro, and applied that. And when I upgraded to Win10, the Pro license continued to work. But now this restored PC – same machine! – says that I can’t use the Win8 Pro key.
M$ wants $199 for a new Win10Pro key, and that ain’t happening. Frankly, I’m THIS CLOSE to copying everything I want to keep onto an external drive, and installing some Linux version.
What version of Linux is easiest for a long-time Windoze user to adapt to?
@Greg: “I need to find a new vet.”
We like Alamo Feline Health Center. https://alamofeline.com Cats only. Apparently the clinic owner literally “wrote the book” on treating cats. Just south of the 1604 Loop at 281.
Not in this case. The compressor ran constantly when A/C was selected. To keep the evaporation coil from freezing the excess Freon bypassed the coil and dumped back into the system. All cold gas went through the receiver dryer back to the compressor. The system was designed before the stop/start clutches of today.
The compressor in my current F-150 is electric, no clutch involved. A/C runs even when the engine is stopped.
I just spent $180 last Thursday getting a possible UTI checked on our cat.
Nothing. My wife wondered if maybe the cat got into some lantana and simply had an upset stomach.
I think we spent $2,000 on the last year of our 16 year old Siamese male cat last year. Every time the vet gave him antibiotics, he would get better for a month. Until the last vet visit, he did not get better and died in a couple of days. The vet thought he had some sort of abdominal cancer. But, we extended his life by six months which both he and us enjoyed. My wife was feeding him Gerber beef and chicken baby food which he loved until he stopped eating and drinking totally.
The compressor in my current F-150 is electric, no clutch involved. A/C runs even when the engine is stopped.
F-150 Hybrid ?
I want one of those. I am hearing that the electrical system has been sorted out now.
@Ken – you might try this place for a Windows 11 Pro license, only $9.99 (list $199): https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/microsoft-windows-11-pro-10
I have purchased from that company before, without any issues. I got a MS Office 2021 for under $80, as I recall. Lifetime license, not the ‘365’ version. Installed with no issues.
Stack Social can get you a W11 Pro key for $10.00. I have them a couple of times with no issue.
If you want a W10 Pro key I think I still have several and you are welcome to a key, if I still have them.
Sort of, the power boost option. Power in the bed. Driving 400 miles round trip to Atlanta 50 or so of those miles are battery only.
The only thing run by the belt is the water pump and alternator. Fan, A/C, power steering are all electric. Variable pressure oil pump.
I’m doing fine with Mint.
There are quirks. As expected. Copy all your My Documents and etc, photos, videos, your stuff, to an external drive.
Importing your FF and Tbird profiles is pretty simple. Just an edit of an ini file.
You can d/l Mint and make a boot able memory stick… to see how it works on your hardware. I had an icon to Install Mint on the desktop.
So do that. Explore and learn.
After playing and poking, and a few re-boots, I installed Mint. I took all of the default settings. It wiped the drive clean. But I’m happy quirks and all.
OldGuy and Ray; Thanks! Grok tells me that a Win11Pro license should work on Win10 Pro.

Light him up.
Youngest is at a concert tonight with friends. I’m glad she’s supporting live entertainment since that put food on my table for years… The venue is advertised as family friendly, but I’m still anxious. (she had zero problems last time she was at this venue)
Weird that it’s still light out and I’m not working.

@Lynn, any meaningful offers yet on your commercial lots?

Huh. Win 11 has serious issues with security. You must have the security stuff in your cpu and motherboard.

Nope. I still do not have either property listed as my agent is slammed to the wall. I just have a 4×8 foot sign in the front. I have gotten about 60 or 70 phone calls and emailed the surveys about 20 times.
People hear the prices and I hear a quick indraw of breath. Real estate is very expensive around here. And the properties are half of my life savings, I will not take a pittance for them.

“Pastor Doug Wilson wants to repeal women’s right to vote.”
“Let’s be honest, women changed the political direction of this country. But that’s what happens when a massive new voting bloc enters the system… hence why the Biden regime was trying so hard to create the “illegal voting” bloc by opening the Southern border. The uncomfortable part for many, and what we don’t acknowledge, is that the results of women voting haven’t always been good.”
I ain’t saying nothing.
I take that back, I think that you should own property to be eligible to vote in the USA. How much property is up for discussion.
