Thur. Sept. 18, 2025 – yep, it costs more and takes longer, every time.

By on September 18th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Weather is the same today as yesterday. And the day before. And before. And next. Cool to start, hot at the end, humid all along.

So, did I get anything done yesterday? Why no, not really. I did one pickup. Went by my shop. Authorized my mechanic to fix my Ranger, mostly. Did some other stuff, but nothing on the list. Kid 2 came home from school not feeling well. I did make dinner, and it was good.

Today though, today I’m doing stuff. Or maybe not. I don’t have my pickup truck so there are things I’d like to do that will be harder, or that I really can’t do, like moving out of another storage unit, or taking some shelves from one place to my shop. Even going to the Lowes and picking up 10 gallons of kerosene is harder without the Ranger. Wahhh wahhhh wahhh. I’ll figure something out.

It’s just not what I want to do, or thought I’d be doing.

But that’s life. Just gotta keep plugging away.

Gotta keep working and learning and stacking.

    If I order – say – a waist size of 31, then I get a waist size of 31.

Oh, my sweet Summer child, your naivete is so cute!

Possibly it’s different outside the United States but here, at least, waistband sizes are qualitative rather than quantitative. More precisely, if you measure the waistband of trousers made in the past five or ten years, they’ll be larger than the stated size, probably by about 10%. It’s especially enlightening to take a pair that’s at least ten years old and hold it up to a new pair by the same manufacturer, in the same size and style. This isn’t only my own observation; I saw it myself and also saw a short article or heard  a podcast on the topic.

I deduce that it’s because of the enfattening of the American populace, letting some guy say with confidence that he still wears a size 34 even if they are getting a bit snug.

I’m pretty sure I told the story about buying jeans for my D1 at the goodwill bins.    There wasn’t any way to do it by size, I just bought 13 pairs that “looked” right.   Off the top of my head, they were 41, 2, 6  and some other nonsense.   One is a ‘girls’ size, one ‘petite’, one ‘womans’, one ‘junior’s’…    In theory, they are proportioned differently, and if you knew which fit you, you could start there.   But there are variations by style, (low rise, hip hugger, boyfriend jeans, full) and manufacturer, and the sizing is even more ‘generous’ for women than men.  It’s like reverse grade inflation.

I guessed pretty well as most came close to fitting her.  She kept several pairs, sent me back with more specifics (dark blue vs light, embroidery and embellishments vs plain) and I brought home another half dozen pairs.  She ended up with a bunch of new jeans, I didn’t have to go to the store, and they were $2.19 a pound instead of $100 a pair.

I find that for the styles of clothes I wear, from the manufacturers I like, sizing is consistent.   36 waist, for IWB carry, 30 or 32 length depending on cut, 17/36 shirt, or XLT.  XL fits fine, but the Tall helps with length to cover the gub.   In a suit or jacket, 44L.

Men’s shoes are consistent too.  10.5 wide, technically EEE.  That said, for shoes a LOT depends on the last used.   Keens famously have a big ‘toe box’ and are very roomy.  Luccesse boots will not fit me, even up a size because I have a high arch.   Adidas shoes are way too narrow.

Mens dress shoes from quality brands are VERY consistent.   Allen Edmonds, vintage Florscheim, Alden, etc will be 10.5 EEE for a perfect fit.

Amazon started with books because there isn’t much to reject and return like for clothes.   Zappos had to offer free returns to convince people to try them, since we’ve been conditioned to ‘try on’ shoes.

Given the amount of variation in bodies, and the lack of descriptive measurements, it’s not that big a surprise that most people need to ‘try on’ clothing.

What is a surprise is that the online shopping model has enough profit in it to absorb the losses from returns.

The city where salary increases outpace the rise in home prices, but there’s a catch

By MARTHA WILLIAMS, US NEWS REPORTER

    Published: 01:55 EDT, 18 September 2025 | Updated: 02:10 EDT, 18 September 2025

San Francisco is the only major US metro where housing prices have returned to ‘normal’, but the city is still facing a massive problem.

A report by Redfin published earlier this month used the mortgage payment-to-income ratio, which indicates how much of a resident’s salary is spent on housing costs.

It found that after a tumultuous period of rising costs and elevated mortgage rates, the ratio in the California city has returned to its July 2018 levels — and is therefore considered ‘normal.’

In July 2025, the median home price in San Francisco was $1.64 million — up from about $1.1 million in mid-2024, according to Realtor.com.

    Normal.

Even the chinese are getting tired of chinese knockoffs.

They have been for a while.

Maybe ten years ago a Chinese guy (born in the PRC, naturalized American, then his American sent him to the PRC for whatever work) approached me about making an app for scanning items in Chinese stores and comparing to a database of known knockoffs or fakes. (eg, Pharmaceuticals and vitamins from the US have been highly valued in the PRC for decades because they can be trusted to not be toxic.) That app never went anywhere because the guy didn’t really have a business plan and was completely unable to assure me that I’d get any return on my investment of time in making the app and setting up a site. “Trust me, bro” don’t cut it, doubly so when the guy saying it comes from a low-trust society.

The hardhat is lightweight, the gloves are cheap, the N95 masks clearly fake, the tourniquet is an obvious CAT knockoff.

The highlight was the reflective vest.  Mine was sized XXXL.  I was happy to see that, since I wanted to be sure it would fit over a jacket if necessary.

I tried it on over a polo shirt.  It was snug.  At my most obese, I was never a 3x person, although I liked 3x overshirts for substitute jackets and to cover up gubs.

Israel unveils Light Shield – a world-first laser that can shoot down enemy missiles and drones… with each blast costing just $2 instead of Iron Dome’s $70k rockets

By TARYN KAUR PEDLER, FOREIGN NEWS REPORTER

    Published: 12:44 EDT, 18 September 2025 | Updated: 13:34 EDT, 18 September 2025

Israel have unveiled the world’s first laser-based interception system that can shoot down enemy missiles and drones for just $2 per blast.

The £413million Light Shield – also known as Iron Beam – fires beams of light with between 100kW and 150kW of energy at targets several kilometres away with pinpoint accuracy.

Now, after completing development and passing its final tests, the state-of-the-art weapon, which ‘never runs out of ammo’, has officially been declared operational.

After being in development for over a decade, the cutting edge weapon will be delivered to the military by the end of this year.

According to police, the Tesla drove off the road after attempting to overtake another vehicle in Villigst and crashed into a tree before bursting into flames.

‘Tragically, it caught fire there, and three people inside the vehicle were burned to death. Among them were two children and an adult man,’ said Bernd Pentrop, press spokesman for the Unna District Police Department for Ruhr News

A local resident tried desperately to open the door using the vehicle’s retractable handles but was unable to, according to German media outlets.

One child was able to escape and was transferred to a hospital in a helicopter.

??  Seems to me that I’ve seen that kind of conversations about the ‘left’ from a few of the commenters here. Many times. Sometimes, the comments are quite aggressive and suggest that deadly force is justifiable against the ‘left’.

Those type of negative and ‘agressive’  comments  – from either side – are not acceptable, IMHO. You have the right to your opinions, but to promote violence against anyone because of their beliefs or opinions or race or legal status (which is not uncommon here from some)  is not acceptable. IMHO.

So, conservatives are assassinating leading members of the left and children in churches ?  I think not.

Somebody recently claimed that 9 out of 10 shooters in the last 20+ years are leftists.  I have not checked the numbers but that sounds about correct to me.

    quoting myself from Sunday:

I do not want to impose my views on others, but I am not going to allow a minority of racist, anti-Christian, America-hating communist terrorists to destroy our civilization, and I will include the yellow-dog Democrats and other enablers as targets if retribution, not collateral damage. Being on the short end of asymmetrical warfare is a suckers game that I will not play.

Violence is the playbook of the left, as recent history shows with absolute clarity. I suggest you sit down and do a dispassionate review. If you still believe otherwise, I’d be happy to quote chapter and verse.

This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.

That’s when Roseanne Barr torched him.

Barr, who was canceled overnight in 2018 for a single tweet, reminded the world that it was the Obamas who helped destroy her career.

“Remember when you and your wife called Bob Iger to have me fired?” Barr fired back.

The self delusion BURNS it’s so strong

the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up

Did he miss the whole Biden era influence and DIRECT INTERFERENCE with X, and Facebook to stifle alternative points of view and conservatives?

    It’s so disingenuous it’s disgusting.

TPUSA Confirms Insane Number of Death Threats After Chilling Video Of What Charlie Kirk Feared Resurfaces

“My fear, Senator [Lee] and I hope I’m wrong,” Kirk said in the clip. “Let’s stay in prayer that I’m wrong. That someone is going to get shot the same way that [House Majority Leader] Steve Scalise (R-LA) got shot and God forbid killed.”

“The left is creating a pressure cooker with so many of their rank and file paramilitary troops,” he added. “That very well might result in one of us getting shot or killed. God forbid that happens.”

“We are getting death threats every single day here on ‘The Charlie Kirk Show,'” Kirk continued.

Well, among other things, I managed to recover my Uniden Home Patrol II scanner from it’s boot looping issue.    In between cleaning and organizing, I found my scanner.  I was just about to pull the backup out of a box, since it hasn’t been running for a while, and it rose to the top of mind the other day.  I decided to take another whack at it.   Turned out that the microSD card is borked,  Windows doesn’t see it, and in fact locks up when you run the admin disk management tool.   I was able to copy the firmware and db to a new card and it booted fine.  Hooray, saved $300+ .

Now to finish the part of the clean up I started so I can get all the crep I was sorting off my bed.

The first is irrelevant, as he was not accused of doing so.

The second is just a coward whining about being caught.

The First Amendment gives you the right to espouse unpopular political views, but it does not give you the right to violate your terms of employment, or tarnish the reputation of your employer. Dr. Alter should find a place to errect a soapbox and put up a tip jar, but he should also be ready for heckler’s to vigorously express their own First Amendment opinions.

Working for any government or government-funded institution is required to swear an oath to “uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. Urging the overthrow of the US government is definitely contravening that oath.

  60. OldGuy says:

Working for any government or government-funded institution is required to swear an oath to “uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.

I asked DDG’s AI about that requirement as it applies to educational institutions that accept federal funds, and it came up with this answer:

The statement is **not necessarily true** for educational institutions that accept federal funds. While many educational institutions, particularly public ones, may have policies that align with upholding the Constitution, they are not universally required to have employees swear an oath to “uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

    ### Key Points

    #### Federal Funding and Oaths
    – **Federal Funding**: Educational institutions that accept federal funds must comply with various federal laws and regulations, but this does not typically include a requirement for employees to take an oath.

    #### Employment Practices
    – **Oaths in Education**: Some educational institutions may have specific policies or practices regarding oaths, but this is not a federal requirement. For example, faculty or staff may be expected to adhere to certain ethical standards or codes of conduct, but these do not usually involve a formal oath.

    #### Variability
    – **State and Local Laws**: Some states may have their own requirements regarding oaths for public employees, including those in educational institutions, but this varies widely.

In summary, while educational institutions that accept federal funds must adhere to certain regulations, they are not generally required to have employees swear an oath to uphold the Constitution.

The same conclusion was given by other AI engines that I checked.
