Rain. And maybe a bit cooler? We eventually got pounded last night after hours of grumble and flash. It was hot and dripping all day before that. Dunno which we’ll get today, hot and humid or cooler and humid.
I got a fair amount of stuff done yesterday, at least by my modest standards for success these days. I returned the plate compactor, and then I took all the BOL trash and got rid of it. Picked up a couple of things for my show this weekend. Did an auction pickup for another AED. I’ll need to order a battery. And I got home without going thrifting.
Did some auction stuff, and worked with my buyer to arrange local pickup of the big thing he bought. I’ve never done that with ebay, and it’s a new process for both of us. Hopefully we can get the details settled and I can get paid, and get the thing out of the shop. Next up, sell more of the stuff.
I do have to write some checks this month and that’s gonna sting. Not much incoming this month. Good thing I married up. Choosing your life partner is the single most important thing you can do to determine your success or failure in life. Choose well.
Hurricane coming for some folks. If you are in the target zone, get your preps ready. Report back on your experiences. We learn as much from failure as success.
So stack up a few failures. You aren’t trying enough if you aren’t failing, and the beauty of failure is now you know one more thing that won’t work. We learn as we go.
Stack what you can.

The wild card was Steve Jobs passing, freeing Apple to explore increasing the size of the iPhone and de-emphasizing the Mac Books in favor of more capable iPads.
No one mainstream makes a 7″ Android tablet except Amazon these days, and that Kindle Fire model is now long overdue for an update, having been introduced in 2022.
I have the 7″ Kindle Fire which makes an excellent device for watching video on airplanes via VLC installed using FDroid.
Lately, however, I’ve received warnings from the mothershop regarding copyright on the “Clarkson’s Farm” episiodes I keep stashed on the tablet so there is a tradeoff of privacy for the convenience.
Plus, Amazon devices in a dense urban setting are never truly offline, even if you don’t deliberately connect them to WiFi, and they are always listening.
Grr. Auto correct.
Yesterday, I unboxed and activated our Starlink for “roaming”. We are in a remote place in the south west of Ireland, and the wired internet service is insufficient for W1’s streaming requirements.
I am favourably impressed. Physical setup was simple. Connect a few cables and put the unit outside with a view of the sky.
Software setup was also simple, although one does need some kind of working internet connection to download and install the Starlink controller app on a mobile phone. I had remembered to do that back in civilisation, so that step was easy.
The system was up and running, providing good and stable internet connectivity within 15 minutes, most of which was spent either finding a suitable route for the cables or making a payment online to activate the service.
The device updated itself in the background, and after about 30 minutes asked to have the antenna unit manoeuvred slightly to optimise reception. All very easy. Amazing technology. Recommended.
When I get home, I will build a carry case for the system. Worth having along on a trip.
@denis, do you have the normal sized antenna, or the little, new one?

I don’t understand what could have happened here. Handheld chainsaws aren’t samurai swords, they don’t take off a hand with a swipe. How the heII did this guy bleed out?
n
I would guess the saw kicked back and cut a major blood vessel and he panicked.
Or the wife did it.
Well, as much as it doesn’t all make sense to me, it’s a good reminder that chainsaws, even little gardening ones, and confined spaces can be dangerous.

When Atoms hit 13-14 years ago Win98 was long gone.
Atoms were used in “netbooks” and tablets running Windows 8 32 bit. 2 GB was just enough to handle email and light browsing.
I had a netbook with Windows XP on it. It even ran my software, just very slowly on its 640 x 480 screen.
I think that I still have that netbook somewhere.
It’s been a chaotic summer. Next to the work (I’m still 100% for another two weeks), there’s been a whole host of body-maintenance things. Hearing aid failed. Dentist appointment. The aforementioned kidney stone – final operation for removal is this Friday. My insurance deductible is maxed out for the year, so there’s an incentive to do everything now, that otherwise might not come up for another year or three. So I added in an eye appointment, and a couple of other things. Hopefully, all the appointments will be over in another couple of weeks.
It’s mostly come at the cost of free time. My garden projects for the year are nowhere near where I had hoped. Still need to put the last couple of stones into a stone wall, and make a bed for the dwarf apple trees. Other, more optional projects are just going to have to wait until next year…
That does seem strange, but “sh!t happens”. It sounds like he was using the chainsaw in a cramped area. Maybe he injured himself, fell down, got kind of stuck, and lost consciousness before he could do anything. If he opened a big vein or two, that’s all it would take.
I use a chainsaw a lot, and it’s essential to remember – each and every time – just how dangerous it can be. Stand stably. Try not to use the blade in line with your body. Don’t work at weird angles or in weird places.
Wow, it is only 76 F outside and raining on and off at 1030am. Unreal for August in Houston.

Not PC, but with an average IQ of around 70, you really cannot expect much.
Ok, have my trailer reserved. Ordered the propane/NG conversion kit for my second Honda eu3000is genny.

Catching up, sort of.
Around here the folks I see driving like that look like they are from south of the border. And so, we must buy Uninsured Motorist Insurance to cover ourself.
Wasn’t an IQ of around 70 considered retarded or borderline several years ago? In the 1970’s?
IIRC, US military cuts off recruitment below 83 IQ as not trainable.
Where I work, there are several work placements of … extremely limited people, probably in the 70 to 80 range. They have to come to work with their ‘assistant’ (read: keeper) which, of course, is paid for by tax dollars. These ‘employees’ receive subsidized wages, again from taxes, and do about as much in their shift of 4 to 6 hours as a motivated worker can do in one. But, inclusivity.
Do you ever have an odd memory pop up? Just random stuff?
I fried a couple of eggs a few days ago and while standing at the kitchen counter eating them, I remembered my Dad would drizzle some Heinz 57 sauce on his eggs and some on my eggs. Maybe a try to gross me out? But, from memory actually pretty good. There’s some chemistry with Heinz 57 and runny egg yolks. Sop it all up with a piece of toast and don’t let Mom see you lick the plate on your way to the kitchen.
After going to the Verizon store I went to the larger HEB in Marble Falls. I haven’t noticed Heinz 57 on the shelf for several years. Though I haven’t looked. I expected the larger store would be more likely than the Burnet store.
They have it. Why is it on the very bottom shelf is a mystery. $5.58 for a 10 ounce bottle. I thought this stuff was like $1.89. Yep…. this is going to be stored in the fridge.
Then I went to the Burnet store. Softener salt. Dog cookies. Canned dog food, the “beef” chunks in gravy. They love that stuff and a tablespoon stirred into their dry food makes “this is the best supper ever!”. The Heinz 57 is right there on the top shelf next to the A1 and Worcestershire. Same price.
Now to fry a couple of eggs.

Which isn’t to say that black people cannot be smart. One of the most intelligent people I ever worked with was a JET-black US Naval officer of Jamaican ancestry. And also one of the nicest men I knew. Back in the early 1980s, he was writing his own operating system for 8088-class microprocessors.
And I suspect that the biggest cause of the low-IQ of black and Arabic people has been cousin marriage; simple inbreeding. If the last couple of hundred generations of your small tribe has been WITHIN the tribe, then the IQ of the people there is going to take a MAJOR hit.
In his book and TV series “The Day The Universe Changed”, James Burke mentioned THREE universe-changing developments of the inventor James Watt. The first, of course, was his development of the steam engine; other people started it, but Watt made it actually work. Second was essential to the burgeoning bureaucracy of Britain; carbon paper.
Third was the most long-enduring. When people can ride the steam trains from one village to another, then it’s inevitable that young man from Village A can meet and marry a woman from Village B, from which they are NOT AT ALL RELATED. Genetically, this is called “hybrid vigor”, and that’s applicable to every form of life. So Britain got a boost in average IQ.
The same was true here in America; a man from one country takes ship to America, and a woman from a different country takes a different ship to America, and their families spread out across the country. My own family is a perfect example; my grandfather immigrated from Greece in 1906. He met and married a 100% Irishwoman after WWI. I’m not sure HOW many generations ago their last common ancestor was, but I’d guess many hundreds, or thousands.
Japan as well; Japanese immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s were generally short; when a man from village A marries a woman from village B at the other end of Japan, their children, the “Nisei”, are often taller, and THEIR – still pure Japanese – children, the Sensei, are taller still. Nowadays, there’s probably very little difference in the height and size of Americans of Japanese ancestry – EVEN WHEN the individuals are mostly of pure Japanese stock. (Also, a diet of fishheads and rice isn’t optimum for muscular development!)
I keep getting a “check engine light“ on our Mini Clubman. The ODB dongle reports five fuel related errors, like plugged filter, bad sensor, fuel mix, etc., one of which could affect them all. In to the shop. I gave up on all but simple auto maintenance when I joined the Army. Too time consuming.
When I started at HEB as a checker there was a guy named Charles. Colored guy, real nice dude. He was a bagger and he was an excellent bagger. He kept up with me. I was pretty darn fast scanning stuff at 34 items per minute and that was the old scanners.
Anyway. Charles lived in some sort of group home for guys who ain’t right. We were about 3 weeks apart in age. And we talked. As equals. His elevator didn’t go to the top floor. He knew that. He wasn’t a total idiot. He just needed help functioning. If that makes sense.
I saw some of myself in Charles. I had had my motorcycle crash and cracked the helmet when I landed. I know I ain’t like I was before. And for the grace of God, you know?
Charles had some kind of epilepsy. Fall down and spaz and yell. Sudden randomly timed brain short circuits. . Freaked folks out. Of course it did. They would get him to the break room and get him settled and calmed. Half an hour later he would be fine but real tired.
Anyway.
HEB has swag the help can buy. Payroll deduction, ya know?
Someone walked by wearing an HEB ball cap. Charles said something along the lines of “that’s a real nice hat”. I filed that away…..
Here we are at the beginning of October. Birthdays are coming up. I went to see Amy the Admin and I did all the paperwork to buy a hat. It was his birthday, right? So I get the hat and stuff the brim in my back waistband and “hey charles, happy birthday man!” and more talking and “hey dude, I got birthday gift for you”.
He almost peed himself when I handed him a brand new HEB ball cap. Thrilled is not the word.
Somehow or another, I was never charged for the hat. I asked and the Admin lady was all “what hat” with a grin.
What’s a mini clubman? Fancy golf cart?
Change the fuel filter.
You can fly helicopters. Dude, you can change a fuel filter.
“EXCLUSIVE: DHS Investigating ‘Laughing’ Tow Truck Driver Who Illegally Towed ICE Vehicle in L.A.”
https://pjmedia.com/victoria-taft/2025/08/18/yeah-about-that-tow-truck-driver-who-laughed-as-he-towed-ice-car-away-during-bust-n4942819
“After weeks of speculation about whether Los Angeles area tow truck drivers are intentionally—and illegally—carting off federally owned ICE vehicles during raids, and after alleged “fact checks” ruled such claims are fiction, PJ Media can exclusively report that at least one of the reports is quite real. Indeed, the driver and whoever sent him are now under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security.”
“Here’s the way it looked when the federal vehicle was parked, lights flashing, in a private driveway area that extended into the public street, and mere feet away while officers were distracted while making an arrest. It was in our story “ICE Doxxer Is Busted While Livestreaming … and Suddenly a Tow Truck Shows Up.””
“The arrest was of the woman we’ve told you about—a TikTok influencer we call TikTok Tatiana whose raison d’etre, since she illegally broke into the country under Joe Biden’s open border, is explaining to her nearly 40,000 viewers where ICE busts are happening and doxxing agents.”
Looks like Mr. Tow Truck Driver just bought himself a federal obstruction charge.
The Clubman is a Mini “crossover” with four doors.
Mini is BMW. Make no assumptions about any routine maintenance chore from that manufacturer.
I have the normal sized one. They went on deep discount just before the newer small ones were launched, and I bought one on spec as a prep. It now turns out to be very useful… however, I am annoyed that Starlink now wants five bucks a month to “pause” a subscription. That was not the case when I bought the unit.
There is a man with a lobster boat working from the little pier next to which we are staying. I left a note under the windscreen of his van yesterday. This morning, he woke us (at noon – I am on holidays, after all!) with a bucketful of crab claws and three lobster. I gave him a few euro and he was made up.
Dinner this evening was “all you can eat lobster” followed by zabaglione and fresh raspberries, espresso and Irish whiskey. Tomorrow, there will be open crab sandwiches, and breakfast the day after will be crab cakes. Decadence in a bucket!
Five bucks a month to pause your account billing does seems outrageous. However. I assume that while paused one can power up the Starlink at any time and instantly connect without all of the new account crap.
“That was not the case when I bought the unit.” Yes. Well, Darth Vader has entered the conversation.
zabaglione sounds tasty.
I’m going to pass on the crab. I don’t like the taste.
And I think lobsters are also bottom feeders. But lobster tastes good. Shrug.
Heh. Army pilots aren’t allowed to work on helicopters unless they are test pilots. And then just the flying portion. Enlisted mechanic school qualifies young enlisted to get a an A&P license. They just have to take the test. I watched plenty of maintenance but never turned a wrench myself. I did pump hydraulic fluid into the Blackhawk system from the built in reservoir. But even that would get a scolding from the crew chief “that’s my job…” And pumping the hydraulic accumulator handle 25 times to charge and start the APU is a PITA.
I would hope so. In fairness, activating my existing account was very simple, so I expect un-pausing would be simple too. Even in the “paused” state, Starlink offers some – slow – connectivity. Some internet for five bucks is better than none, and might be sufficient for modest needs.
We get brown crab here, (cancer pagurus). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer_pagurus I am not super keen on the brown (body) meat, as it has a strong fishy taste, but the white claw meat is sweet and mildly flavoured. Mixed with a little lemony mayonnaise and some chives or parsley, it is very nice.
Lobster are the cockroaches of the sea! Still delicious, though. I learned something odd from the fisherman today: lobster don’t like thundery weather. They withdraw into cracks and crevices, and so don’t get caught in his pots… That was why we got a lot of crab, but “only” a few lobster.
It is, and it is surprisingly simple to make. The key is using a heavy-bottomed saucepan and whisking like your life depends on it. It makes a fast, but delicious, impromptu dessert, with simple ingredients that are often already to hand. Good for guests.
Yeah, wife’s cadillac srx station wagon was a dealer only service to change the front right turn signal bulb. I looked. Then I looked on line. Then we took it to the dealer.
IIRC the EASIEST way to access it is to remove the inner wheel well liner as the first step…
So it is better to take some stuff in for service, especially when the code isn’t completely unambiguous.
n
Oh. It’s a car. Well then, hie thy ass to the local Pep Boys or whatever and buy a new air filter. As a start.
Maybe $20 max. Clear the OBD codes and see what happens. Then maybe ya go to the shop.
I bet you still have the air filter the car came with from the factory. Replace it. Or have one of your kids do it.
Which is enough for basic e-mail. And very slow loading webpages. Probably plenty fast for this sie. For $5 a month? Sounds like a bargain.
Yeah, it’s like having a 1200 baud modem in a 14.4 modem world.
My brother was a pilot until he turned 65. I would not have that man change a fuel filter on a go-kart. Just pumping gas was sometimes a challenge.
We leave Sunday, at about 6:00 PM from Atlanta for a long flight to Frankfurt. That means we have to leave here about 10:00 in the morning to get to Atlanta, about 4.5 hours, get to the parking place and shuttle to airport, 1 hour, check in at the counter (10 minutes), get through security (1 hour). We will be in Germany for three weeks. Trip number 11. Flying Delta, Premium Select (equivalent of domestic 1st class, almost). 8.5 hours in the air. Movies loaded on the laptop, including the new part 2 of Mission Impossible. Noise cancelling headphones. Meal has already been selected.
Haha. I remember getting my first 1200 baud modem. I thought I ruled the world!
The neighbor had, I say had, a new beetle. A headlamp failed. So Jim is gonna fix it. Because that’s what Jim does.
He had to jack the car up and remove the wheel well lining. That was just a start. She got rid of the car about a year later.
One of my acquaintances from schooldays was a notorious dunce in matters mechanical. He is now the chief maintenance engineer of a major airline. Hmmm.
See? We are all retarded somehow.
The stunt work in the final “Mission Impossible” flick deserves an IMAX screen.
We have tickets for the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s trip on the Hiwassee Loop for later this Fall. The train departs out of Delano off I-75, not Chattanooga, and I wasn’t aware of the travel distance required from the museum Downtown until after I hit the “purchase” button.
We’re committed now. I don’t really care about the drive, but my wife will gripe. Fortunately, we don’t have to be there until 1:30 PM.
I am foolishly volunteering to run for treasurer of a hobby club.
Anyone have tips for using Quickbooks? That’s the software they’re using.
I can do my own research and training, just asking for your experience on tips you learned and pitfalls to avoid.
They actually use a CPA to do the non-profit forms reporting. For a small club like this, I think that’s overkill, but the current treasurer is hopeless. He regularly locks himself out of the Paypal account and needs rescued.
Delano isn’t far from Cleveland, which has plenty of hotel options. Driving problem solved.
I spent a week in Cleveland one night.
Do dogs get dementia or oldtimers? I’m just asking because Penny is gonna be 14 in October. Yeah, I get it, her back legs are going out. So I hoist her up onto the bed. Not a big deal.
But the last few weeks, she acts normal. Eats normal. And going to the front deck from the back door is normal. So I go looking. Because her back legs are getting wonky and I worry.. She’s not plopped down in a sunny spot, like she did six months ago.
She’s standing at the front door wanting to go back into the the house. Naw, this is like just walking around the corner. Granted, it been hot, pushing 100f. But out the back door and directly to the front door is a new thing.
Sheesh. Her Highness sleeps a lot. So maybe she just dies? Turns off. Pisses the bed, I don’t care. But the stoking thing, puppy is dead, but the body isn’t done, I can do without that. Been there .
I hate this stuff.
Yeah. I can tell she is starting to shut down. I’ve been here with a few other puppies. It never gets easier.
I’m guessing April or May. We are going to get through one more winter.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. I taught five daughters to drive, including how to check the oil. When they got their DLs, that was the last time they opened the hood.
I get you on saving money, codes reset and just come back. With five possible codes or all of them, I’ll take it to the shop. Mini Coopers are shit to work on, just like VW Bugs. No room to do anything.
If quickbooks is already set up, then just go with what’s there. Reports are easy, and a good way to find stuff that has been misfiled or mis-categorized.
IIRC getting it to actually print takes some searching.

Big fire with smoke visible from all around. Apartment building fully engulfed. They are finally down to just white smoke after 2 solid hours. Went to my storage unit and loaded up stuff for my show. It was sunny and the forecast for the next couple of days calls for rain, so I thought I should jump on the chance. OF COURSE as soon as I have the truck loaded it started to rain. Then as I tried to get to my shop, I got caught at every light, and behind every texting idiot who wouldn’t go thru a green light.
Wouldn’t you know, by t he time I got unloaded the rain had almost stopped, and by the time I got home, it was dry and sunny again.
I had to dry off and put everything in front of a fan when I unloaded. I’ve got another run to make tomorrow, weather permitting.
Getting everything in one place should help me load up in less time. And unload too.

“Big Win for the Second Amendment As DOJ Drops Appeal in Postal Worker Concealed Carry Case”
https://bearingarms.com/camedwards/2025/08/19/doj-drops-appeal-in-postal-worker-concealed-carry-case-n1229641
“The Department of Justice will no longer seek to put a postal worker in prison for carrying a concealed firearm for self-defense while on the clock; a major reversal from the Biden administration’s prosecution of the gun owner.”
“Emmanuel Ayala was arrested at work in Tampa almost three years ago after he was caught carrying a firearm in a fanny pack. Ayala, who possessed a valid Florida carry license, maintained that he had the pistol with him for self-defense, and argued that he had a Second Amendment right to do so.”
“The Biden-era DOJ, on the other hand, declared that the text, history, and tradition of the Second Amendment allowed for gun bans in government buildings, including postal facilities. U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle sided with Ayala, ruling that the DOJ had failed to come up with any historical analogue that would suggest the ban on firearms in postal facilities is constitutional.”
Sweet ! I have often felt that the gun ban on postal facilities for the customers was unconstitutional.
The courts overruled the gun ban on postal facilities parking lots years ago. Now we need to get rid of the ban inside the postal facilities.
I have no doubt that if we looked we would find illegal aliens with Real ID issued by a short list of blue shiitehole states.
I hope we get a very high profile confirmation, followed by a sad declaration from DHS that Real ID from State X can no longer be trusted subject to a complete audit, and air travelers from that state will be required to use U.S. passports.
We’ll make an exception for Grewsum–just require a cavity search.
DOJ Launches Investigation of DC Crime Statistics

There have been allegations for years that the blue shiitehole cities have been underreporting their shiiteholeness. Make an example of DC then expand the investigation.
I use a Passport Card as ID when I fly.
I don’t want to take the risk of misplacing the drivers license during the TSA kabuki.

I really need to make my passport active again. I let it go several years ago when I was really busy.

I know people who carry inside postal facilities routinely. They will not compromise their personal safety.
I rarely do more than pop in, drop a package or letter, and leave, but it’s a felony. The only place I unburden myself is in school, at an event. I forgot the last time and had to go back to the car.

Time for bed. I’m trying to shift back to going to sleep around midnight. Won’t get it today, I still have to shower, but I’ve been closer to my goal.

“The Lighter Side Of Dating, Mating, And Civilizational Collapse”
https://wilderwealthywise.com/the-lighter-side-of-dating-mating-and-civilizational-collapse/
“Even thirty years ago, finding a spouse was as easy as grabbing a beer at a kegger. You met. Maybe at school, maybe at church, maybe at work, maybe some friends introduced you. Hell, maybe at the kegger. It was a straightforward and reliable process, and it was also often sweaty and fun.”
“Even before my time, though, it was even easier. Take it back to the 1800s, and men brought home the bacon, women kept the hearth warm, and together they built a life, maybe a farm, maybe a picket fence. Often, people would meet and spend their whole lives in the same location.”
“The process wasn’t perfect, but it worked for thousands of years.”
“Fast-forward to 2025, and the mating market is a dumpster fire. A constant source of conversation is the baby bust, describing how women aren’t reproducing enough children to keep society going.”
Uh oh. This sounds bad.
As former ground crew, I have doubts. Pilots are amazing, intelligent, quick reacting, handsome and superior people! Just ask them! But I heard one repeat a joke that I’ve never forgotten. “If I was smart enough to be a navigator, they wouldn’t have made me a pilot.”
Maybe over simplified, but a large factor. I think there’s also a correlation between latitude and intelligence, based on a loose correlation between distance from the equator and difficulty maintaining a population. Thinking deep antiquity, prehistory in the neolithic period, pre agricultural. At the equator, it’s enough to hide in the forest from the sun, and cuddle for warmth with your mates. In more northern and southern areas, you need to plan, coordinate, anticipate and cooperate more to ensure enough resources to stay alive. The weak and dumb die. Less so in warmer climates, including to a lesser extent the southern hemisphere.
This doesn’t worry me at all, at least, not directly. It’s a temporary societal problem that would self-correct, given time.
What does worry me are the groups that are reproducing, because they are the barbarian hordes. Subsaharan Africa. Most Islamic countries. Even that would be ok, if we would stop accepting them into the West. Let them deal with their own problems. Let them become civilized in their own time. Or not. Whatever they do, it shouldn’t be our problem.
If you look back into history, virtually all successful civilizations have had lower birthrates than the hordes surrounding them. Sparta, Rome and others since. In the end, the hordes dragged them down. One might hope that we would learn the lessons of history.

They’re gonna need bigger pallets for the return ‘bin’ stores.
