Another hot humid day to come, like the ones just past. Joy. Over 100F in the afternoon. And even though it said 50% RH, it certainly felt like more. I am hoping for a little relief from the humidity, but IDK what to expect any more than the forecasters do.
Did not get everything I wanted to do done yesterday. Did the major things, and a couple of small but lingering things. I’ve got the same sort of day planned today.
I have to hit a couple of stores for the stuff I’m taking with me to the BOL. I need to go by a bank and mail some stuff. I’ve got a guy who wants to meet to buy one of the things I’m selling for my buddy. And I would like to load up and head out mid afternoon. The chances of that happening that way? Meh, could happen.
Gonna be working on improvements hard for a week. Not so hard on stacking. Although, I hope to have the time to make some improvements to the community park and boat launch, which should stack some goodwill and help with my assimilation into the community.
Work with what you’ve got, stack what you need.

Giving Disney a political beatdown that even caused many Republicans in the state to recoil in horror didn’t hurt DeSantis reelection chances.

If you can get your political daughters to understand the ramifications of a national debt that will soon have an interest payment higher than defense spending, then you will have accomplished a major educational event! Virtually no one in government is paying attention with enough guts to risk their political careers to stop this juggernaut. Doom is now visible on the horizon for anyone that looks and thinks about their own spending.

Same here. Ask why they think tRump is this, that, or the other thing, and you get crickets. There is much brainwashing from the LSM, schools, etc. I always recommend to younguns’ and others: “Instead of being miserable for four years (possibly 8 more), find out how you can benefit from the current policies.” I gave up on asking them to read behind the “news” and influencers.
I find it funny that I’m always approached about
HitlertRump. I don’t bring up politics, but will fire both barrels at lies.At the age of 65 I finally read Aristotle’s “Rhetoric” for the first time.
I have never seen a clearer explanation of why you can’t expect irrational people to respond to rational arguments. And why propaganda works.
All discovered over 2000 years ago. People haven’t changed.
Even before reading that, I knew about the Gell-Mann amnesia effect. It led me to critically read every news item, from whatever source, and ask two quesions. “What are they lying about?” and “Why are they lying?”
“Lying” in this context includes false statements of both kinds, where the liar is unintentionally spreading false information, and when the liar is intentionally spreading false information.
Some call it cynicism. I call it experience.

You and me brother, you and me. I still have arguments with my 37 year old daughter about politics. She even thinks that trans people are special and they should have benefits. She also thinks that ICE agents should all go to jail and that anyone who wants to should come here and get government money.

Palantir, once implemented, is Demonic. DOGE has been effectively minor surgery instead of the meat axe necessary. The Department of Education has been reduced but not eliminated. ICE has the potential to become a “papers please” Gestapo. Ruling by Executive Order is wholly Imperial. The Debt, FED “policy” and FIAT currencies, in general, is a spinning plate act just waiting to explode horrifically. Alligator Alley, like Guantanamo, IS a Concentration Camp.
That said, I applaud, with whistles and foot stomping, the accomplishments of this Administration. Next one, though….
Trump should set up a way to allow advocates for illegal immigration to directly contribute to the costs via monthly deduction from their bank account.

No need to fill in banking info–the government already has it. As far as amount, the government will calculate that, too, based on the number of people that sign up and their income.
Better yet, just make it an automatic surcharge for all registered Democrats. They can opt out if they wish, but that info is public…
A boring update about my phone. It’s an LG V20. It was the flagship phone a couple of years before I bought it. Complete with Verizon’s version of bloat ware. I dropped the phone a couple of weeks ago. First time for everything. Did I drop it on carpet? Does the Sun shine at night? Of course I was in the bathroom to check the outside temperature.
Ya, we don’t actually need that left third of the screen except for silly things like making a phone call. Say that like Sam Kinison. Dare ya.
But! Have no fear, Underdog is here!
I have a brand new V20 spare . Swapping the sim and SD card was simple. I logged into Google Play on the phone. Google re-loaded my contacts, all ten browser bookmarks, and some pictures (I think, I saw a new folder appear). It did not re-load text messages. I thought it backed them up but not for me. Still, a pretty sweet feature.
I hit Google Play on the website via my PC and reinstalled most, not all, of the stuff I had.
It’s mostly working after a couple of hours. Not bad for my first time. So new phone is clicking together and eating the freaking battery. The same battery that was down to 3 days in the old phone is now lasting a day. If a car battery can suddenly fail, so can a phone battery. I ordered a new battery on eBay.
What’s running and eating the battery? Looks normal but for a couple of Verizon things. I forced stopped them, power cycled the phone and put it on charge.
Did you know the camera will not use the flash when battery is down to 12%? Now I do. Phone also gets kinda pissy when the battery is down to 5% and turns the backlight down to very very dim. But it’s a phone and finishing a phone call is important.
This morning was five days off charge. It was down to 12%. There have been a couple of short phone calls, a few txts, e-mail checked, a couple of sites checked with Chrome. A few hands each of Solitaire and Tri Peaks and Pyramid. Google Photos has popped up a few times, too. Pretty normal usage for me.
I messed around this morning and got the battery down to 5%. It’s on charge at the moment. I don’t use the fast charger that came with the phone because I think slow charging is better for the battery. So what if it takes four hours to charge? I’m asleep anyway.
I found it interesting this morning that from 12% to 5% took almost an hour today and not 15 minutes. Same battery…. should be the same exact phone firmware.
What is not installed anymore?
@paul: On my Samsung (Android) phone, there is a screen in Settings, Battery that shows you all apps’ battery usage. I suspect a similar screen on your phone.

I hope that we do not have to have reeducation camps in the USA when WWIII starts.
BTW, my former USMC son wants to put a squad of US Marines every mile on the southern border with live ammo. Heavy weapons will be more distributed. Marine infantry battalions have three companies of light weapons and a company of heavy weapons (81 mm mortars, 50 cal M-2, grenade launchers, TOW missiles, etc), about 1,500 men. My son was a mortar gunner and SAW gunner in heavy weapons for four years.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is Shutting Down
So in two more months, CPB will be gone. In theory it’s funding would have allowed it to continue for a lot longer but President Trump succeeded in taking back money that had already been appropriated:
https://hotair.com/john-s-2/2025/08/01/the-corporation-for-public-broadcasting-is-shutting-down-n3805397
I have a great idea! (I know, par for the course…)
How about a reality show that follows the continuing journey of former CPB staffers looking for work? They could feature a different person every week, having a camera follow them as they start out confident that employers will trip over each other vying for the chance to employ someone so charming, confident, and perspicacious, so insightful and good-looking, so righteous in their liberal outlook and hardly condescending at all when dealing with the less fortunate…
I’d suggest getting John Walsh to do the intro each week, and then a segment at the end that looks in on previous subjects.
It’s not that I expect many of the stories to take a dark turn into failure, despair, addiction, and homelessness–but if it happens, it happens.

We can look forward to the Final Report on the Millions of Public Dollars Provided to Sesame Street Over More Than a Half-Century. Who knows? Maybe Bert and Ernie will retire, come out of the closet, and get married.

Picked up a pack of Hill Country Fare fajitas. Sometimes it’s actual skirt steak. Sometimes it’s a sheet of pot roast meat. Often a mix. Yes, there is a difference in flavor and texture. The largest package was a hair over four pounds. I looked at all packages. The price per pound is the same as last month. Just smaller packages.
Heck, it takes as much propane to cook six pounds as to cook four pounds.
By the way, there is no such thing as “chicken fajitas” simply because chickens do not have meat in that part of their body.

A bad side effect of the gig economy.
Before Uber eats and such, delivery drivers were employees of the restaurant. They had to pass interviews, and egregious bad behavior would get them fired.
There are also cultural and civilizational norms here. How many of the delivery drivers are poor, non-white, or non-American?
Today I discovered that my Ford dealer has dropped Uber in favor of an in-house shuttle for service customers. I wonder what was behind that? Was it cost, or customer complaints about the Indian, Middle Eastern, and Chinese drivers and their lack of English language skills?
Please. Come to Austin. Uber Eats and Doordash materials are probably presented along with Turo brochures in the F&I room at the local dealers.
The last time I watched the delivery service drivers work a restaurant here, they were all white men and I didn’t see one getting out of a vehicle purchased for less than $45k new.
As for the Ford dealer dropping Uber, it is “bad optics” for a Cybertruck or even a Prius to show up in the driveway to shuttle customers to work/home on the service manager’s dime, especially if the visit is about a recall issue.
Ford was number one in recalls last year.

If we eliminated property taxes in Texas, we would have companies fighting to get here to Texas.
Re: food delivery
I have gotten several fast food deliveries via GrubHub from various fast food places lately. All orders are promptly delivered (you get text messages to alert you to progress and arrival).
All food is in a big bag and the bag is sealed shut with tape. Drink orders are in cups with lids, and there is a piece of tape over the lid – including over the straw hole – so any lid removal (or tampering) is evident.
Delivery is prompt and efficient, at least in my experience.
Due to mobility issues, I also get groceries delivered from WalMart (delivery is free with the WalMart Plus service). Ordering is quite easy with the app or web site. You are alerted and can respond to any substitutions; you can accept the alternative (at it’s normal price), or cancel that unavailable item.
Cold things are kept together; frozen things in the same bag with other frozen things. All in the standard WalMart plastic bag (not sealed like the fast food delivery). I usually give back excess bags on the next delivery. Pharmacy deliveries are also available (free with the WalMart Plus membership); they are in a sealed bag. Very convenient.
GrubHub food deliveries are at a premium price (more than going there), but WalMart food is at the ‘in-store’ price.
Delivery people are efficient and quick. Overall, the extra cost is worth the convenience, especially with my mobility issues.
My son has fast food delivered. He has his groceries delivered. Amazon sometimes makes two stops a day at house, but generally almost every day, except Sunday. To him it is easier than getting the kids in and out of the car.
For future reference, put the straps on the bundle to align them, then start a couple of 3″ deck screws in the bottom of the bottom board, push the end of the bundle up past level, then run the screws in. Run a few more in from the top. Repeat on other end.
I’ve strapped loads to the top of the pickup topper on the contractor rack, then screwed right through the strap with a fender washer. Usually about the time I hear a voice saying “That should ride.” I lost a small square off a load on the highway once and I’ve always been thankful there was no one right behind me.

“Holding Their Own X: The Toymaker” by Joe Nobody
https://www.amazon.com/Holding-Their-Own-Toymaker-10/dp/1939473772?tag=ttgnet-20/
The tenth book in a series of nineteen alternate history books about the economic collapse of the USA in 2015 and onward. I reread the well printed and well bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback self published by the author in 2014 that I bought new on Amazon in 2014. I own the first twelve books in the series and am rereading the first ten before my first read of the eleventh book.
Um, this series was published in 2011 just as the shale oil and gas boom was really getting cranked up. The book has crude oil at $350/barrel and gasoline at $6/gallon in 2015. Not gonna happen due to oil well fracking in the USA so the major driver of economic collapse in the USA is invalid for the book. That said, the book is a good story about the collapse and failure of the federal government in the USA. The book is centered in Texas which makes it very interesting to me since I am a Texas resident.
The $6 gasoline was just the start. The unemployment rises to 40% over a couple of years and then there is a terrorist chemical attack in Chicago that kills 50,000 people. The current President of the USA nukes Iran with EMP airbursts as the sponsor of the terrorist attack. And the President of the USA also declares martial law and shuts down the interstates to stop the terrorists from moving about. That shuts down food and fuel movement causing starvation and lack of energy across the nation.
The accumulations of these serious problems cause widespread panics and shutdowns of basic services like electricity and water for large cities. The electricity grids fail due to employees not showing up to work at the plants. Then the refineries shutdown due to the lack of electricity.
The Indian Tribes in New Mexico have decided to reroute the Rio Grande river running through their territory for more agriculture. However, this will cut the water from the western side of the Texas Alliance. And the tribes do not like people coming in to see what they are doing.

Tase both officers, holding th button down until the charge on the pack is zero. Change cartridges and repeat.
The VA should file federal felony charges for the death of the dog–K9’s are often treated as human police officers from the standpoint of charging, so why not a support dog belonging to a veteran? Find them guilty. Remove their pensions, their right to vote, and their 2A rights. Tatto “UNARMED LOSER” on their foreheads, and drop them off in the bowery or local equivalent.
So how do you get her off of your family income? I mean, she’s pushing 40 and you and lovely bride are pushing 65.

@Paul Yes, loneliness seems to be normal. Well, for me also, not saying it’s good for us, but normal.
It’s a theme in several works I’ve read. In Dune, it’s referred to as the price of being a human in a world of people. Think I’d rather have friends.
I dropped by to ask if the hive has a recommendation for inexpensive but reliable spinning rust or SSDs to replace my 10+ year old rust tornado. I just did some diagnostics because the disk now thrashes just about constantly if I’m watching videos for more than about 2 minutes. I’ve ruled out the browser (same result in 4 different browsers) and Windows by having the thrashing continue through a soft restart until a couple of minutes after logging back in and the network coming up.
Any suggestions appreciated.
At the risk of confirming stereotypes, that’s one (but only one out of many, many) aspect of the ham radio hobby. I’m not a talker, myself, but when I go up and down the dial, I hear lots of one-on-one chats talking about whatever. Usually about the hobby and equipment but very often about other things, and you can steer conversations. And there are group conversations, too. Some of those are directed, with predefined topics of discussion, and some are free-wheeling, and others are just pickups of 2 or 3 or 4 guys (it’s usually guys) . If you look hard enough you can find over-the-air trivia nights most nights.
None of that appeals to me personally. I like learning new information and meeting others face-to-face. I like the technical side of the hobby. I have a half-assembled electronic kit on my workbench right now. And I am learning Morse code by choice. It’s no longer required for any license.
If you don’t want that kind of commitment, you could try GMRS radio. The main issue there is its short range, and I believe you’re pretty rural. But GMRS users tend to be more focused on communicating, and less on radio-as-a-hobby. They have a pretty good-sized community. And the license is only $30 with no test required.
Ham licenses are more of a commitment, with tests and multiple levels. I think it’s safe to say that Daynotes members wouldn’t be roadblocked by the testing, at least for the first 2 levels, Technician and General. The 3rd and final level, Amateur Extra, can be challenging, but it doesn’t really get you that much more over the General class except bragging rights and little bit more usable spectrum.
Just something to think about.
I used to listen to two nets most days. The World Wide Friendship Net, and the Alaska Morning Net. Alaska morning is my early afternoon…
They are linked over the internet to local repeaters. You only need a scanner to listen if one of your local repeaters is linked to the net. There are ways to listen over the internet directly too, Echolink and … shoot, I forget the other one. They have what are essentially voice chat rooms connected over IP to radios…

Made it to the BOL without issues. Some rain on the way. Not much though. I ended up standing the deck boards on edge and bundling them with packing tape, then strapping to the rack. That made them pretty stiff, even if banana shaped.

81F and humid but there is a cool breeze off the lake. I’ll probably have a tiny little fire and some reading before an early bedtime. I’ve got an early start tomorrow. Or I might just read in bed and skip the dock time tonight. I’ve got 7 more nights.
n
I forgot to mention, the if after listening to the nets, you want to join in, it just takes a $20 baofang walkie talkie and a Technician license. The tech license is very easy to get with a little time spent on practice tests (free and online).
I’ve written thousands of words on how to do that here and elsewhere.

So how do you get her off of your family income? I mean, she’s pushing 40 and you and lovely bride are pushing 65.

According to the article here https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/techtips/keyboard-shortcuts-for-firefox/ (which details all of the keyboard shortcuts) , Alt + Shift + Q quits Firefox. So it could be a ‘fat finger’ error.

More than 4 TB, get a WD spinning drive, 12 TB for $240:

If your PC does not support M.2 drives, time to get a new machine. However, there are M.2 PCI to SSD adapters though, shudder.
I dropped by to ask if the hive has a recommendation for inexpensive but reliable spinning rust or SSDs to replace my 10+ year old rust tornado. I just did some diagnostics because the disk now thrashes just about constantly if I’m watching videos for more than about 2 minutes. Wait, how much ram do you have ? 16 GB is a min for Windows 10 or 11, 32 GB is preferred.
What O/S are you running ? Microsoft is getting ready to walk away from Win 10.
There are SSD SATA drives but they are much slower than the PCIe M.2 drives (4 TB WD Red for $320).

I assume that you are running an x64 operating system.
Windows 7, on an AMD A10 at 3.7GHz and 16GB of ram. I built this system in, if I recall, 2012 or 2013. It’s done well, but I think the rust is falling off. I want to get another 6 to 12 months from the system, then replace it with what will be my final built system. I’ve lost my enthusiasm for the build/debug/retry cycle.

Me too. I buy Dell PCs from now on.
I bought my daughter a Dell PC a year and a half ago. It just works. The price was not much more than I would have paid for the parts.
And… something I did during the diagnostic process has (apparently) resolved the problem. The disk is no longer thrashing when viewing video, even at high resolution. I’m watching a youtube video at 1080p with no unusual disk activity. Added Reels on FB, got some thrashing until I closed those, back to silent.
I’m gonna call it ‘technician effect’ because the problem stopped when I started planning to fix it. So it goes.
Well, there you go. Facebook was doing the borg and assimilating your data.
