Cooler is so nice. Cooler and sunny, with warm later describes yesterday and today’s forecast. I’m looking forward to it since we apparently have a storm coming from the Gulf…
Did indoor stuff, despite the great weather. SWMBO decreed that I would work on tax related stuff, so I did. I alternated with domestic bliss and organizing and putting away things. Watched some youtube too.
Today will be more productive. I did get some of her questions answered, but I need to do mileage and some categorizing in Quickbooks. This preliminary organizing and summarizing, as well as data validating, makes it easier for our accountant/enrolled agent/tax preparer. That saves us money, and gives us a look at the expenses and finances that we could miss if we just handed her a stack of paper and a quicken file. It’s worth doing but it isn’t my favorite task.
I’ve got some other stuff to do today too, like a few auction pickups. I should at least get the one in the wrong direction from all the others. I can put those off until Tuesday or Wednesday and group them into one trip. I prefer to combine trips when possible.
It’s time to start moving some other projects forward too, now that the cooler weather is starting. I don’t know how I’ll fit them in, but cutting back on online time is probably the best and easiest way. That would give me an extra hour or two during the day… staying awake all day would help too. And not driving around doing pickups- that would help as well.
IDK what I’ll do yet, but I’ll figure something out.
If I learn to clone myself, I’ll share here in the comments.
Until then, I’ll just keep grinding and stacking.

Summer is definitely over here. We had a nice Saturday, but yesterday’s high was in the teens (50s-60s for you barbarians). Lows this week hovering a couple of degrees above freezing. It was a short summer, maybe 6 weeks of warm weather. The garden is proof: zero peppers ripened, and just a handful of tomatoes.
Of course, the climate alarmists are still publishing regular articles about how this has been the “hottest summer ever” in Europe. They must live in an alternate reality, because it sure wasn’t in this one. I guess I’m glad, because they are thoroughly discrediting themselves.
@brad, they’ll just insist HARDER, with bigger punishments for not going along…

67F this morning. That is cool. Crazy cool compared to a week ago. I’m thinking Fall. Well, false Fall anyway. We’ll get more heat if history is any guide.
We may get another hurricane. This was supposed to be a brutal hurricane season… instead we got two early storms, one out of nowhere, and maybe one last hurrah.

Everything is related to climate change. The houses in California that are sliding off the mountain are blaming climate change, global warming, Trump, whatever. No one seems to think that building on unstable soil may have something to with the houses changing zip codes by themselves.
I can see the insurance companies involved in this. Insurance companies will not pay for anything that is related to climate change regardless of the coverage. It is a new way for the companies to deny coverage.
Funny, I mentioned the sliding houses in California to my wife. When I mentioned that the ground has been moving 1cm/year for decades, her immediate reaction was how much?!?! Which ought to be the reaction of anyone who ever looked at a house in that area.
Seriously, anyone who built a house on an actual, slow-motion landslide deserves what they got. The only people I would feel sorry for would be anyone who was lied to. Anyway, how the heck to those people have utilities? Power, maybe I can see, wires are flexible. But fresh water? Sewage?

Always note the use of phrases like “on record” or “in recorded history”.
Every schoolchild in Florida used to know that the wrecked treasure galleons in The Gulf predated “recorded history” and indicated very active seasons throughout Spain’s colonial era in the region. The US did not take possession of the territory until 1821, and statehood did not happen until 1845, following protracted battles with native tribes which limited activities like weather observation.
Season predictions are almost useless. In 1992, Andrew didn’t hit South Florida until August 24, during what was predicted as a “normal” season.
The media is making a big deal about the Texas origin of this scam ring, but, saints and beghorrah, those look more like fine Irish names to me.

““They’re Gonna Pay for It”: A Single Texas Billionaire May Be About to Force Greenpeace USA Into Bankruptcy”
https://thelibertydaily.com/theyre-gonna-pay-it-single-texas-billionaire-may/
“(DCNF)—The Texas billionaire owner of a major pipeline company is on the precipice of potentially bankrupting Greenpeace USA, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.”
“Kelcy Warren’s company, Energy Transfer, is seeking legal recourse against Greenpeace’s American arm in court, alleging that several Greenpeace USA entities paid for attacks against the company’s Dakota Access Pipeline and proliferated misinformation about the firm and its project in 2016, according to the WSJ. At the time, the project was a flashpoint in the environmental movement’s crusade against major fossil fuel infrastructure developments, and it was ultimately completed in 2017.”

Some interesting facts in the article, down ‘below the fold’. Sounds like the company had good drivers and bad trucks from their inspection stats. The interesting thing is what the industry norms are…
All of the new heavy trucks suck due to emissions crap on them:
My buddy with the three year old Dodge Ram ¾ ton with the Cummins diesel just hit 100,000 miles (he is a construction supervisor). His check engine light and check emissions light has been on for a couple of thousand miles as he is really busy. I told him to get ready, he will need to replace all of the emission sensors, pull the intake manifold and clean it, and maybe replace the exhaust system, $2,000 to $4,000. He does not believe me.
I am seeing an incredibly large number of resurrected old class 8 and class 9 trucks from the 1980s and 1990s on the road now. Maybe the 1970s too. Diesel locomotives too, BNSF just bought a couple of hundred Canadian Rail locomotives down here to coast that they are running in and out of Mexico.

Keaton brings the improv skills.
The title character’s screen time is actually very limited in “Beetlejiuce Beetlejuice”, but Keaton seems to improv a very dark joke by repeating a particular line a couple of times in a particular context. Either I’m reading too much into it or he’s doing something brilliant.
If it is a joke, I didn’t get it until later.
The whole film is like that. Very Tim Burton.

Musk already announced that he’s following it up with manned flights. And he’s named an economic number for what it has to cost in order to get Mass into orbit. I think it’s about a 10,000 fold reduction in cost. But he says it’s hard but doable. As the silicone Gray beard says if anybody would know it’s Elon Musk.

“Peace is hardly breaking out in the Middle East, and the volatile region could produce an unhappy surprise at any moment. But for now, concerted action by the Biden administration is helping keep hostilities contained as voters decide whether Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, deserves her own shot at the White House. That’s contributing to falling oil and gasoline prices, which is a welcome tailwind to Harris in the final weeks of the election.”
“The Middle East has been on hair-trigger alert since the Hamas terrorist group attacked Israel last Oct. 7, killing nearly 1,200 Israeli citizens. Israel’s ongoing invasion of Gaza has put the tiny Jewish state in direct conflict with Iran, which backs Hamas, along with the Hezbollah militants in Lebanon and several other regional groups hostile to Israel.”

WRT to borked links – if the pasted URL doesn’t convert properly, then use the ‘link’ button (just to the right of the ‘x2’) and paste it in that dialog. That should always work.
Especially nice for really long URLs.
“MacArthur Park” I like Donna Summers’ version. Then again, I like just about all of her music.
Fun with EGR: I had a Volare wagon with a slant six, It was a “Super Six”, said so on the air cleaner lid. Two barrel carb. It ran like [bad word] with the EGR vac line connected. I cleaned it. I replaced it. Car ran fine with a golf tee to plug the vac line. But you can’t pass inspection like that.
I finally blocked it. A piece of sheet aluminum with the gasket traced on it with pencil. Cut just inside the line with tin snips, drill the bolt holes. Whop the edges smooth with a hammer on a block of wood, Then a little bit of make pretty with a file. Put it all back together…. gasket, plate, EGR. Never another problem.
I miss that car. It had an Earl Schribe paint job that was going bad. But it looked great when it was wet. I learned how to change the starter and water pump and too many alternators to count. Brakes front and rear. The snap-on grommet things that hold the windshield wiper mechanism together. Lot more. Like rebuilding the carb. Oh, and how to adjust the torsion bars so the car sat level instead of nose down.
I look under the hood of the Cherokee and man, it’s going to be a pita. The Freestar is worse. The Frontier? There’s an engine in there, I can hear it running.
If I were 30 years younger, I’d be trying to get aboard a Mars mission, in the full knowledge that I would die on Mars, or on the trip. In the 1600’s, people leaving what is now Germany to go to Virginia didn’t expect to ever come back to Germany. And not all of them made it to the Germanna Colonies.
@ rick, that particular link doesn’t work with the link button , paste it into the text box. Hand edited, I tried everything to make it work.

Because that URL contains a space character (the ‘%20’) – which will ‘break’ the URL.

But it works as a URL, just paste it into the address bar… so it’s a good url, it’s the parser in the comment editor that has an issue. Not that it’s a big deal, it only happens about once every 4 months. The other features like the ability to edit far outweigh that issue.

@Brad:
The AirPods Pro 2 are supposed to be getting a firmware update in the coming months, waiting for FDA approval, to allow the devices to function as hearing aids. Hearing test on the iPhone generating a custom profile. I personally think it is an interesting idea. A good idea, hhhmmmm, no so sure.
The thought of wearing AirPods all the time for hearing just seems, well, dorky. If I am talking to someone wearing AirPods my impression is that they are not listening to me. With my current hearing aids the devices are almost invisible.
I wear my AirPods at noisy sporting events, especially basketball in an enclosed gym. Using adaptive audio setting I get the noise cancelling but am still able to hear people talking. Fairly amazing technology. But I still feel like a dork when talking with people.
People with hearing problems the cost of $249.00 for the AirPods Pro is a fairly good price for a quality, rechargeable product. It might just be the option they are looking for. The devices seamlessly connect to my Mac or iPhone without having to pair through BlueTooth settings. Just putting the devices in my ears trigger the connection.

Having some fun working with a local non-profit. Delving into their website and the tools they use to connect with their volunteers and supporters.
They need to migrate their WordPress site to a different host. It ties in with Square, PayPal, Constant Contact, ConvertKit and probably some other tools. I’m not done investigating, and haven’t been able to get behind the WordPress curtain – I don’t know if their current web server is Windows or Linux, whether it’s CPanel or something else. I haven’t migrated a WordPress site before (I intend to farm that out – I’m game to learn but shouldn’t do it with this site) so not sure how complex it is, or whether I can trust the promise of NameCheap to do it seamlessly and well.
I see they have an account with namecheap.com, but I don’t see any evidence they have any services in the past or currently with namecheap.com It’s possible they started going that direction, created an account, then changed their mind.
I don’t recall what the most recent like / don’t likes were for domain hosting.
Greg? Any thoughts?
Actually, the URL-encoded space character (the ‘%20’) is not the issue; it was being handled properly by the WP function that makes URL’s ‘clickable’.
It appears that the trailing ‘close parenthesis’ character just before the ‘period’ in the URL is a ‘breaking’ character; at least with some quick testing.
So a URL such as
https://www.example.com/some-page(2).jpgmight cause the ‘breaking’ error. The editor used in the comment box will handle it properly (it will convert to a clickable HREF as you type in the comment box), but saving the comment calls the standard ‘make-clickable’ WP function, which doesn’t like the closing parenthesis before the ‘dot’ character. At least, according to the tests I did on my test site. Interesting sequence; I may pose a question on StackOverflow WP forum.

Correction to my earlier post – they’ve been paying Doteasy for decades for webhosting and domain name registration. Found out the reason they had a friend of a friend (that had a server farm) step in was because the site had become sluggish under Doteasy.
Unless there’s something to beware of with Doteasy, I’m inclined to find out what was behind the sluggishness, then return to Doteasy (for the history and consistency). Not a great reason for sticking with a place, but will help with their continuity and documentation.
@Jenny – you can find out the server details of a WordPress site via the WP Admin, then ‘Site Health Screen’ (in one of the boxes on the main admin page; or this URL, adjusted for the site domain: https://www.example.com/wp-admin/site-health.php ).
On that screen, use the ‘Info’ link at the top, then expand the ‘Server’ tab. (Lots of info on those screens.) The Server info will let you know what OS the server is using.
Moving a WP site, with content and files (especially with an ecommerce site, which probably has lots of plugins and supplemental databases) is not for the faint of heart. It can be done, though.
Most of the big hosting places (example: JustHost/BlueHost or others) have a paid service that will do a WP site move for you. Cost might be $100-200, though. But perhaps worth it for someone else to do it.
All my sites are hosted at JustHost. BlueHost was used for Jerry’s sites. This site is hosted by DreamHost. All three (and most hosting places) use cPanel to get into other pieces of a site (database, etc).
@RickH
WP Admin, then ‘Site Health Screen’
Brilliant! Thank you – I think I used this feature once upon a time however I’d completely forgotten it exists. That’s a huge help.
I don’t have the skills to do the move, or at least not efficiently or without a high level of risk. So will definitely be hired out. The tech who helped out when the organization hit big problems last year is, I think, willing to take on the task. He seems really competent as far as I can tell from our limited email exchanges and the evidence of what he set up for them. I’m hoping he’s willing as that’s the simplest, assuming he’s as competent as I think.
I recall you mentioning JustHost in the past. I’ll take a look at their offerings, as well as BlueHost and DreamHost.
Thank you very much for weighing in. I can do lots of IT things but know my limitations.
I use DreamHost. For since about 1997. No probs. They have some kind of WP thing that I don’t know about or need. Because, NotePad for the win!
I used bluehost for my hobby site move. It’s been a learning experience. Despite their online assurances, it’s not immediately obvious what to buy, how to provision it, make it active, and use it. They hide cpanel behind their own tool, but it’s there.
Pricing was competitive.

Dummy attack.
I had a wall of text post. I know I had hit Submit. I came back after feeding the dogs and hit F5 to see what’s new and post is gone. Not the first time.
Anyway. Air fryer trivia. French fries say to pre-heat four minutes. And then cook for 8 to 11 minutes. I have a little 900 watt machine, not a 1500 watt machine. So I go with the 11 minute time for fries. Those wily Orientals getting the default timer setting on the machine as just what I need is pretty awesome .
Butterflied shrimp and Gorton’s fish fillets don’t take as long to cook. Add when shaking the fries up.
I’m cooking for one. Enough fries somewhere between a small and a medium order at What-A-Burger. A couple of Gorton’s fish fillets or five butterflied shrimp. Five looked looked like a nice number on top of the fries.
I bought some other frozen stuff at the store today. Got air fry directions, ok, give it a try.
When I get bored with the frozen stuff I’m going to air fry a can of sliced spam. Stand the slices up and leaning on each other so the air can flow. Why not? Worse case is I have to buy a new machine.
I have used Pair Networks since January of 2000. Mostly because RBT used to host there a long time ago. I have a dedicated server since I get so frequently attacked. I also have some huge flatfile databases (300+ MB) that I write myself.

The last time that Texas had a total grid failure was in the middle 1950s. First, the north and south grids separated at Jewett, Texas then the steam turbine controls (overspeed then underspeed) whiplashed the subgrids until everything tripped offline on overloads all across Texas. It happened quickly in the middle of the night when all of Texas was in a deep freeze.
The operator telling me this in 1982 said it happened on his first year or two on the job. He then tried to start the diesels using the stored compressed air. The first diesel (1,500 hp, 1,250 kw, 300 rpm, 10 cylinder inline, Fairbanks Morse surplus submarine diesels) would not start and used all the compressed air. So he spent an hour or two using the hand operated compressor to get 80 psig of air in the tank. He then got the second diesel started before he ran out of compressed air again.
He and the other night operator then restarted the two 22 MW steam boilers on fuel oil (the natural gas was curtailed due to the extreme cold) and brought the local grid back up. IIRC, it took three weeks to restart and put the north and south grids in Texas back together.
That same operator blew up the #1 steam boiler in 1978 or so. He noticed that the don’t freeze up natural gas burner had blown out in the middle of the night. He lit a torch from the pitch bucket and threw the torch in the furnace. He forgot to purge the boiler for five minutes so the accumulated natural gas in the furnace went BOOM. He survived and became the plant chief lawn mower. I asked him one day why a leadman operator was mowing and got the entire story. He even took me in the office and showed me the pictures.

Seriously, WTF was she thinking?
Greenpeace started off well. But like so many political organizations, they live in their own bubble, get more and more extreme. Plus, of course, Pournelle’s Iron Law at work. The actions of the modern Greenpeace have become counterproductive to its stated goals.
tl;dr: Would be nice if the organization went down, and a fresh organization (with *new* people at the helm) took its place.
I’ve read about that. There are also other companies working on similar things. Unfortunately, I expect mass market introduction is still a couple of years away. Plus, Europe is slow about admitting such things to the market.
I expect I’ll have to shell out the dough for my first set of hearing aids. Maybe the second set, a few years from now, can be over-the-counter.
I can claim I need these to do my job (I have trouble understanding women in the classroom environment), so there is a national disability insurance that may cover part of the cost. We’ll see…
If it’s the typical non-profit, their IT has been built by “fungal growth”: one person after another adding stuff, but not daring to touch anything that already exists. The ones I have seen have been overly complicated and very fragile. Worse: in case of catastrophe (say, ransomware), no one has any idea how to bring the infrastructure up from zero. Often, there aren’t even any real backups.
You’ll do them a huge service, if you can just figure out what all the existing pieces are, and how they fit together. If you can then simplify the whole mess, you may save them a pile of money.
Overly complex and fragile… Good luck!
