Wed. Sept. 30, 2026 – the 30th already fercrisake…

By on September 30th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall

Hot, humid, wet, who knows? We got a ton of rain yesterday in various parts of Houston, and barely any in others. Maybe we’ll get some today, maybe not. But it still will be hot and humid. That I’m pretty sure of.

Did my auction stuff in the morning, then did pickups in the afternoon. Got a bunch of stuff for the aquatic side of the BOL. Some other stuff to add to the stacks. Some cheap stuff just in case.

Today I’ve got kid taxi duty as D1 is likely to be home sick. Then I’ll get her to the doc in the box. W has a business trip and won’t be home until Sat. Lots of school activities this week and weekend. I’m going to be busy.

And I’m trying to keep some momentum on my own projects. So I’ll be squeezing those in between the other stuff. I have a feeling I won’t be napping.

It’s a great life if you don’t falter.

So don’t falter.

n

and do keep stacking, the world is NOT getting better.

    Wednesday. Good morning!

Best wishes for D1’s speedy recovery. Reminds me to make an appointment to see my GP one of these days and get some prescriptions renewed.

Busy, busy. Squeezing three days’ work into a half-day today, plus packing for travel this afternoon. I am flying with hand-luggage only, and limited to 8kg, so I need to be a bit selective, especially so as to leave some capacity for shopping on the trip.

Vienna is about the last European capital that still has individual retailers in the city-centre, as opposed to just more branches of the same chains that one sees in every city. There will be opportunities to get stuff that is unique, or hard to find elsewhere.

The forecast is for Indian summer weather, so I don’t need to worry about warm clothes or raingear, which helps a lot. On the other hand, I might need a pair of shorts!

Charging my Kindle Paperwhite for the airport and the flight, and I will take along a disposable dead-tree paperback.

    Have a good day!

We had one stolen out of our mailbox on the street.   Bank made us whole but that was the last time we put a check in the mailbox waiting for pickup.   I miss living in civilization.

I made a phone call to the tax office yesterday to request some paperwork. This morning, I had a – really rather good – phishing email in my inbox about “confirm your bank details for a tax rebate”. I never had such before.

    Coincidence much? Feind hört mit…

Camas, WA has so much friggin’ money thanks to Fisher Investments that the high school in the picture is the former Sharp Labs R&D facility as in Sharp Electronics.

Even WA State is becoming too much of a pain for Fisher after bugging out of LA so I believe they are plotting a move of HQ to the Westlake area of Dallas even if many of the employees stay put.

D1 staying home sick.   W on the way to the airport.   Snack for D2 is made.

Do I need to switch to bill pay for everything?  Is bill pay more secure than just putting a check in the mail?

Bill pay services is all I use anymore for bills. Some of the bills are charged to a credit card. For my other bills I use the free bill pay service of my credit union. I don‘t pay any postage. A couple of the companies are done electronically, the others a physical check is sent. The only check I write is to the church. The bill pay service would also do that but for that I chose to do it myself for reasons I can’t explain. I never place a check in the mailbox. The occasional gift check to relatives is delivered to the post office.

I write checks to the IRS and my accountant.  And when I buy a car every 8 to 12 years.

I write checks from my brother’s estate, which should wrap up by the end of the year.

I write checks from my hobby club, but those don’t generally get mailed.

All told, about 10 checks a year, mostly club business.

Almost always, they get put directly in the mail slot inside the post office.  Which is a drag, since I have to disarm before I go in.

I really need to join the SAF and GOA.

A beautiful clear cool morning, 48F!  A heat wave is predicted by this weekend thouh.

    —

I use checks only for my water bill, deposited directly in their own mail drop.  Bills otherwise are all bill pay, free through through my bank.  The USPS mail box out here is notorious for being stolen from. Occasionally I’ll use a paper check for some odd thing, but not often.

Whilst talking about bills, the Discover credit card buyout by Capital One didn’t affect me much, a few online questions and a slightly different website, and the statement due date moved to just after the 1st instead of mid month.  Which I prefer.

The new website does have interstitial ads, Walmat, CVS, and a couple I don’t recall.   Ugh.  Malicious code associated with ads, placed on otherwise safe sites used to be a thing, not sure if it still is.

My old credit union has renamed itself again, and my card doesn’t work, I need to fix that but it means a 160 mile round trip to Camarillo because they want to verify that I am me..  Maybe I will try getting pissy on the phone, claim advanced age and such…

  12. lpdbw says:

    – have to disarm before entering the parking lot.   I use the drive up drop box instead.

The state of the law on that is unclear.  It’s weird that if I join SAF, I’m suddenly part of the plaintiff group and can carry inside the post office, but if I’m not a member, it’s not clear if I can even have my gub in the truck in a safe.

They took away the drive up box at my closest post office, so I have to go inside.

Adding “Join SAF and GOA” to this week’s todo list.

The USPS cluster box across the street got hit the other night. I was talking to the carrier and she asked if I have cameras pointing towards the boxes. I have one that looks out my garage door window but when the door is closed the box view is cut off. Probably wouldn’t have recorded any thing at that distance as it is an older unit and not that sensitive. Replacing it soon with a new pano unit under the eave just outside.

Talking to her I found out they are using a post office key to open the big doors and expose all boxes. At least no damage to be repaired. All units are keyed the same in each zip code. They recommend you pickup you mail each day since most thefts happen at night. I get informed delivery by email so I always know what’s coming and when it’s delivered. And it’s is just across the street.

She says sometime now the just cut the post or yank them out and take the whole box.

  15. Ken Mitchell says:

Paying bills; Back in the Good Olde Days, my wife and I would write checks for the regular bills, put them in envelopes, add stamps, and put them out for the mail man in the morning.  It took time, and we kept having to buy more stamps.

Now, everything is online and bills get paid using the USAA bill paying service. Faster, easier, and I don’t have to buy stamps.  I don’t think I’ve written more than two or 3 checks in the last year. I haven’t bought stamps in a couple of years, and with the “Forever” stamps, I don’t have to worry about increases in postage.

  16. dcp says:

The only check I write is to the church. The bill pay service would also do that but for that I chose to do it myself for reasons I can’t explain

A common reason for that is to maintain a record you can present to the IRS if/when they demand evidence supporting a claim for a charitable deduction.

  17. dcp says:

Nowadays I pay my bills electronically, from a separate (free) checking account dedicated solely for that purpose.  I keep the balance low there, and top it up once a month.  Once the deposit clears, I pay the month’s bills.

I do not use auto-pay.  I want the reassurance that I can prove that any withdrawals from my account (or charges to my credit cars) were indeed specifically authorized by me – any others are fraudulent.

  18. ITGuy1998 says:

One check for property taxes each year, paid in person. One check (in person) at the DMV for tag renewals/Ad Valorum taxes. That’s it for any regular bills. There always seems to be one or two additional things a year that pop up requiring a check.

  19. EdH says:

Well, after a number of attempts I have regained access to my Cloudy Nights account.  Others are still struggling.

I understand the desire to remove Zombie accounts, they are used for various evil things, but I had posted an observation record the day before.

But  it is better than “free and worth every cent” as my father would snarl say – it is still a good experience overall.

  20. Ray Thompson says:

A common reason for that is to maintain a record you can present to the IRS if/when they demand evidence supporting a claim for a charitable deduction.

The church gives me a sheet showing the contributions and is valid for the IRS. I also have detailed records in Quicken which is mostly acceptable for the IRS.

One check for property taxes each year, paid in person.

Any payment to a government agency should always be a check. Then print a copy from the bank once the check clears. I learned that lesson the hard way when I used bill pay for my property taxes. The bill pay agency would not provide a copy of the cleared check. The county said I had not paid my taxes. The bill pay agency wrote a letter that the check had cleared, for the amount, paid to the agency, on my tax bill. The county had posted the check to the wrong account. Then I had to fight to get the penalties removed because when the county transferred the money from the wrong account to mine, the computer system still considered my taxes paid late.

  21. dkreck says:

Speaking of USPS informed delivery just sent an email showing 9 pieces of mail today

7 are garbage headed direct to the blue bin after being torn in half if need be. St. Jude, Salvation Army, USO, AAA travel ad, two retail clothing ads, Dental Ins ad. Half are addressed to my mother who died in 2019 and never lived at this address. Two are real mail and the newspaper.

Please steal my mail. You can have it.

I would only use the outgoing mail (a slot in the cluster) if it was before the carrier came.

Managed to move the chicken run. It took much longer than usual because of the mud. We had misting rain early this morning, not enough to turn turf into mud but enough to keep the mud from drying out. It wasn’t quite as mucky as yesterday, when we had lots of rain, but I still had to pull my boots out carefully a couple times.

One of the hens was yelling at me while I cleaned the coop. I’m not sure if she was mad that I was stealing their poop or if she needed to lay. There were only two eggs by early afternoon, half of the normal low. It’s possible that my wife already grabbed a couple. Also possible that the chickens were thrown off their pace because of the rain, the lack of running around, and having to walk through mud or wet, dirty grass any time they came off the various roosts.

50/50 odds of whether half of the clean bedding will be kicked out by the time I close them up this evening. In case I’ve forgotten to mention it, a sizable fraction of chickens are buttheads.

Oh, and moulting has begun. There weren’t many feathers sticking out of the mud where the run was, but the usual number is about zero.

I was going to mow this yard today but it’s still too wet. Maybe tomorrow, then push off mowing at the other house until Saturday, based on the current forecast. The other house is well overdue but I haven’t been able to take care of it because of, you guessed it, rain.

On the plus side, flaming meteor season hasn’t started yet. Maybe we’ll miss it this year.

TN was supposed to remove another useless piece of buffalo dung from society today. But some liberal judge stepped in and stayed the execution carrying out of justice. The crime occurred 30 years ago. The lady killed a friend by torturing, carving a pentagram on the chest, and keeping part of the skull for souvenir. The cretin also tried to kill someone while they both were in prison.

The lawyers claim she had a bad childhood, sexually abused, yada-yada-yada. Which is nothing but lawyer speak for “we want our names in the news”, bolstered by some worthless psychologists who could not get a job at McDonald’s. Yeh, I was abused as a child, physically, mentally and sexually. I don’t for a nanosecond buy into that worthless mentality of a bad childhood leading someone to kill. I haven’t killed or tortured anyone, yet, although the year is still not over.

Meanwhile, the real victims, beyond the deceased, are the families who have had to sit through 30 years of waiting for justice. Some would say revenge to which I would respond “right on!”. The state has paid millions of dollars for the incarceration of this worthless piece of fecal matter. The family has to continue to attend hearings, listen to lawyers, news broadcasts, ramblings of worthless attorneys and deal with idiot judges. The SCUS ruled her execution is to be carried out. Yet some judge feels they know more than the US supreme court.

I get it that everyone is entitled to proper legal proceedings. To put someone to death requires absolute certainty in the crime and that the punishment fits the crime. In this case there is no doubt, from any angle. The lady cretin needs to have her life ended.

I write 30 to 40 checks a month.  It is the only way that I can keep track of everything.  I also get 10 to 20 checks a month for people paying me.  It is a howling maelstrom.

I really dislike the Bill Pay thing that my accountant is now using for two of my businesses. It takes me out of the loop. I have a rule that only I sign checks. Well, that level of control is now gone.

  33. paul says:

As for paying bills, if I have to mail it I go to the Post Office.  Because when I still had to send house payments, I could drop it off at the PO and I’d get credited in a few days.  Three or five days including Saturday and Sunday.  Burnet to Florida.   Put it in the mailbox?  TWO WEEKS for delivery and I get a late fee.

I don’t know but I swear the carrier had a tub in the back of his car for outgoing mail and only took it into the PO when it was full.

Christmas cards?  Same thing.  Mail them on the 10th and folks got them after Christmas.   Drop off at the PO and folks got them several day s before Christmas.

I write very few checks anymore.  I go pay the property rent at the tax assessor’s office once a year.  I somehow managed to get the van and truck and trailer tags synced up enough so that’s one more check at the license office.  I write a check o pay cash at the feed store.  The spray foam insulation was a check.

Yeah.  Two checks so far this year.   I had a check for the plates but between getting the renewal and paying, the van dropped $3.  Shrug.  So I paid cash because they don’t give change on a check.

It’s kind of crazy.  I use to write and mail like 20 checks a month.   Rent, electric, water, trash, gas, phone, cable TV,  Sears and a few other cards.  And book club and magazine subscriptions.  All while Bimbo the Cockatiel was walking around my desk and taking bites off the ivy plant… and just hanging out with me.  Sit on my shoulder a while.  Sit on my head.  “Hey! Get out of the ask tray!” Chew on my earring…. it was a gold plated ball and he nibbled it enough to make it look like a gold nugget.  I still have it.

Everything is paid off.  House, land, truck.  Phone and Starlink go to a credit card.   Discover is a couple of clicks to pay on the Frost web site.  The HEB card, Frost would mail them a check.  But they have a direct draft option that is almost instant.

The electric meters hit checking directly.  Not a problem in like 20 years or so.

    Kind of crazy.

I’m working a roll of Forever stamps.  I used several mailing stuff to various insurance companies a couple of years ago.  A few and now two Christmas cards a year and I look to have more than half of the roll after 15 years.

TSA’s new CT scanners have smaller entry tunnels, effectively tightening carry-on size enforcement to 24.5 inches wide by 16.5 inches high.

The TSA has rolled out advanced 3D computed tomography (CT) scanners at over 250 U.S. airports. These scanners have smaller openings (24.5 inches wide × 16.5 inches high) compared to older X-ray machines (25.2 inches wide × 16.9 inches high), which means some carry-on bags that previously passed may now be flagged for size issues before reaching the gate

Bags that cannot fit through these scanners may require passengers to check them at the airline counter, potentially causing delays
Most major U.S. airlines still list the official carry-on limit as 22 × 14 × 9 inches, including wheels and handles
Southwest allows slightly larger bags at 24 × 16 × 10 inches, while budget carriers like Frontier and Spirit often restrict free carry-ons to around 18 × 14 × 8 inches, with fees for larger items. Airlines measure the fully packed bag with handles extended, not just the empty shell, so a 22-inch suitcase may measure 23.5–24 inches in practice.

Any problems at the airport, just never mention Ray’s name 😉

One time someone said that was scary to see.  Did I turn green like the Hulk?  No…. it just wasn’t you there for a couple of minutes.

Well, ok.  Northern German, Viking Berserker, same same.

I don’t know.  I know my Dad never ever ever struck Mom.  Yell at her and she’d be like “August, but this….” and he would calm down.  I think he adored her more than she could ever understood or know.  But I could see it.  And it was really cool.

I don’t remember Dad  ever whopping on my sisters or my little bother.  Brother.

But me?  And he wondered once why I didn’t want to hang around and do the Father and Son stuff?    Oh, hey Dad, I never know when you’re gonna grab me by one arm and start swinging your belt.

Condensed version of that conversation.  Him and Mom both seemed shocked. …

Dad was like what?  Hey.  I got my ass beat because Sam flunked 1st grade math.  And somehow it was my 6th grade ass who was at fault…. we didn’t go to the same school or ride the same bus.  But my fault.  You came back from ‘Nam when I was seven.  I don’t know what happened over there.  You never talked about it.  And somehow almost everything after you got home was my fault.  All the while calling me a lazy bag of shit fucking dummy. Seven years old and yeah, my Father came home but what happened to my Daddy?
I mean.  I respect my Father.  Because that’s what one does.  But I really miss never having my Daddy.

Like the people in the supermarket who are surprised each time anew that they need to produce a means of payment…

A propos, I think the last time I saw a cheque was about twenty years ago, when a publisher sent me one written in a foreign currency for author’s royalties. It cost me considerably more to deposit it than the face value, so I told them not to send me anything unless the sum is at least three figures. Haven’t seen a penny since.

The plane was – surprise – delayed, but at least no jihadi copilot. We were fortunate to find a local one-man-band bar still open after we made it to the hotel, checked in and unpacked. A fantastic, authentic olde worlde place too. The beer was delicious! W1 is tipsy…

That just gets you the very back seat on the plane, so no one is behind you when you depart. Of course, there are always opportunities when boarding the plane to gasify others. The woman in the middle seat next to mine had obviously thought she was going to get a free upgrade to the aisle spot when the doors closed, and was visibly and audibly annoyed when I turned up as last on board. I waited until the fasten seat belts sign was extinguished after takeoff, then gave her a Mr Ray special to the face as I stood to use the lavatory. She got the same again when I arose to disembark. Greta Gerwig’s Glam-Rock Aslan Is A Shoddy Imposter

Aslan has one blue eye and one amber, rainbow whiskers, dragon-scaled skin, and a red-striped face modeled on David Bowie. A woman, Meryl Streep, will supply the voice.

    https://hotair.com/headlines/2026/09/30/greta-gerwigs-glam-rock-aslan-is-a-shoddy-imposter-n3819454

At a minimum it is theft of intellectual property–par for the course in Hollywood. If I needed another hobby I would make one out of using AI to manipulate performances by Streep and her ilk.

It is also part of a concerted ongoing assault on our culture, done with the connivance of the morally and intellectually bankrupt PLT’s and their puppet masters the Chicoms.

My father was the kindest human being I have ever known.

Last time I saw my father, or had any contact, was 1973. I did attend his funeral 30+ years later. I was an accident and neither parent wanted me. I was given away to my aunt and uncle, who had no children and needed help on the farm. My aunt and uncle were very abusive. Daily beatings I considered normal as I knew nothing else. I was never good enough, always put down, and sexually abused by both of them, more so by my uncle.

Well done. Pick your nose and leave the result on the armrest to claim the armrest for your own. But exiting and expelling while in the aisle brings enjoyment to many people and no one knows who to blame.

What an idiot!  The cotton field behind my house just got picked by a huge cotton picking machine and made about a dozen bales.

And all poor people used to pick cotton.  It was not just blacks.

       https://redstate.com/wardclark/2026/09/30/trump-historic-us-energy-deal-includes-new-reactors-alaska-lng-pipeline-n2207596

“On Wednesday, President Trump announced the closure of a deal with the Republic of Korea that will have that country making major investments in American energy projects.”

    “— A $22.3 billion, 6.5 GW natural-gas power facility in Encinal, Texas.

    — Eight large nuclear reactors

    — Alaska LNG project”

I wonder where the eight LARGE nuclear reactors are going to go?  We need about 300 of them across the USA.

Just another reason why I am so glad that I voted for Trump. Trump is a builder, not a destroyer like the previous Presidents.

Allis Chalmers was engineering a cotton picker in the mid 60’s.  Rotating long fingers whisked the fibers off the plant and into the combine for further separation.   They hoped it would be the next big thing in farm equipment.  Their other business, dam electricity generators, had peaked and a recreational ATV had limited growth potential.   Kinda fun tho!

Dad managed their corn head operation in NW Indiana before moving to a custom milling machine operation in Northern Illinois.  The aerial view of the plant and the big back yard of vertically parked finished corn head attachments in neat rows looked like stainless KKK robots.

Retail diesel is roughly $6.50 a gallon, up from $3.69 a year ago. The diesel crack spread, the refiner’s margin over the cost of crude, has broken $100 a barrel, against about $15 before the war. WTI Crude is around $94, cheaper than during the 2022 spike, yet diesel costs more. The difference is going to the refinery gate. Refineries are running at 98% of capacity, and is meeting domestic needs while exporting about 1.5 million barrels of diesel a day peaking at 1.9 million barrels in July. Clearly there is no domestic shortage. But, domestic diesel domestic storage volumes are at record lows. So what’s going on?

    Follow the Money

No mystery here: It’s war time profits. Marathon, Valero and Phillips 66 earned a combined $12.6 billion in the second quarter, up from $2.9 billion a year earlier, and returned $6.3 billion to shareholders. Phillips 66 and Valero have since authorized another $15 billion in buybacks, and with diesel margins now double the second-quarter benchmark, the third quarter will be bigger.

Trump’s promise to remove criminal illegal aliens “first” was a big mistake

By doing so, he broke a core American compact: No one is above the law, including “nice” illegal aliens.

    https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2026/09/trump-s-promise-to-remove-criminal-illegal-aliens-first-was-a-big-mistake/

    Idiots.

Prioritizing the violent criminals has resulted in an extraordinary decrease in violent crime. And picking up the closely associated if not actually violent is efficient, keeps families together, and encourages self-deportation.

Anyone who wants to go soft on any of the non-violent illegal alien invaders should be offered a choice: check book or STFU. Sponsor them, pay their legal fees, pay their fines, pay their health care, and pay every penny that their invasion has cost the American people.

Otherwise, let me have the same privilege to ignore U.S immigration law. I’m tired of this selective “diversity” farce. What’s diverse about having another illegal immigrant from south of the border, the Middle East, or China? You can’t go to the grocery without tripping over them. Try going to the local coin op laundry during the week. Is there a Spanish night, etc.? Ever been drying a large comforter late in the evening and have a couple dipsticks playing jihadi radio? Allah up your alimentary sideways, Mohamed.

I’ve never bumped into a South African Boer at the grocery, or a Coptic Christian–if there are any that the Islamofascists haven’t murdered. I’d be all for letting a few thousand into the U.S. for “diversity”. Then a few thousand more.
