Wed. Sept. 24, 2025 – usually the title doesn’t mean anything

By on September 24th, 2025 in open thread

Somewhat cool? It was warmer yesterday morning, so it might be warm again today. And it will get warmer throughout the day. It did rain in various parts of town yesterday, although not much, and not for long. Lots of ugly clouds in the sky. Today should be the same.

I did a couple of pickups after doing some office work in the morning. Then I took some stuff to the shop, and moved stuff around at the house. I’m making slow progress cleaning up and getting stuff out of here. It just piles up elsewhere for now, but the goal is to get rid of it.

I did decide to move the laser engraver and all of the stuff for it to the shop. It would be convenient to have it set up here, but for safety issues, and noxious fume issues, not to mention the lack of somewhere to put it issues, it has to go somewhere else. The printers are still here for now. I am still holding out hope that one kid or the other will get interested in using them, or some of my other ‘maker’ stuff. So far it hasn’t happened. And it may be generational, as this generation seems to be content to do this much and no more.

It could be that they haven’t found that thing they would dive into yet, but we had all had a dozen hobbies and interests by now. I’d already built models, a model railroad layout, had slot cars, built a heathkit clock, torn apart a pile of electronics, tried to take my bike apart to make it go faster, and bought my first computer (TRS-80.)

When a buddy introduced me to the music of Led Zeppelin I had to hear all of it, same thing when I heard Jimi Hendrix, or later Kate Bush, or Rush. My kids, and the kids I see at school, are content to hear what they hear, and not pursue more. Their extreme risk aversion extends to learning new things or doing new things.

And that isn’t good.

So I’ll keep doing what I can. Stacking what needs stacking, and learning what needs learning. Maybe teaching what needs to be taught…

How can you have TDS so bad your first reaction to health news is to loudly proclaim you’re doing the opposite, just because of the messenger?

When JNJ stock is 25% held by the usual mutual fund suspects, and the company already “took one for the team” in the recent past by their non-MRA jab to be disregarded in favor of eliminating Control.

Music is uninteresting anymore in the US. Most songs are commoditized and consumed in formats which eliminate a significant portion of the original performance using an algorithm based on psychcology, and you would be hard pressed to find a track which isn’t available somewhere for “free”.

I bet McD’s for two today costs more than a date night meal 25 years ago…

Restaurant prices are high here. McD for two is about $40 here. Yup, 25 years ago that was defintely a meal in a nice restaurant.

Thanks for all the kind words, folks!

We indeed had a happy meal, but not from Mickey D’s. 🙂

A friend recommended a local place that has two dishes on the menu – eel in herb sauce, or ribeye steak, grilled on the bone. We had the steak, medium-rare for W1, and “bleu” for me, and it was glorious, served with sauce béarnaise, watercress, a green salad, and fries “à volonté”.

When a restaurant serves only two dishes, they really know how to cook them.

Not quite date-night prices from 25 years ago, but not ridiculous either. 150 bucks plus tip for two glasses of (OK) champagne, two main courses, two glasses of excellent Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, and two desserts. We left happy and satiated, with a doggy bag of meaty beef bones for my buddy’s dog (whose name is Bones!) to enjoy.

Congrats !  Take a shower after hoofing that beast through the countryside.

BTW, my dad left me a Ruger 270 single shot break open with a 20+ inch barrel.  Sounds very close to your single shot.

Haha. Lucky you to have a Ruger No 1 and an heirloom to boot! I had a .30-’06 one in my grubby paws at a gubshop years ago, and foolishly didn’t put a deposit on it. I still regret that. They are not very plentiful here, and the prices reflect the scarcity. The Ruger falling-block action is really stout, probably even more so than my break-barrel one.

Routh still hasn’t been put on trial in Florida court for the charges which provided the basis to hold him.

Regardless of what happens at the Federal level, Routh faces at least another decade of Republicans holding all three branches of government in Florida.

Phone alarm didn’t go off, but I woke on time anyway.  I’d left it in the truck, and it “shut off 5 programs because they were causing the phone to overheat.”   I guess one of those was the alarm noise player.  If the truck and the A/C aren’t running, the phone will get too hot to touch when left inside.

David Strom is usually pretty solid, but he misses the point entirely. People in government have taken an oath and should be held to the highest standard.

The routine application of the law to the little guy is to ruin his life and put him in prison for relatively minor infractions. Public servants should expect no less.

If an ex-president retains classified documents that he legally received as chief executive, it is impossible to prove that he did not exercise his plenary powers and declassify them in order to retain them. Pass on trying to prosecute Trump, Biden, Obama, or any of them.

The thing that differentiates Biden, however , is his possession of documents from his VP and Senate days that he could not have legally held. Then mystery of how he came to hold docs that he could only  have viewed in a SCIF was not investigated.

And to top it off, Biden’s handling of classified docs was criminally negligent. So, yes, unlike Trump, he should have been prosecuted. .

This morning just before 7am local time, an individual fired multiple rounds at a Dallas, Texas ICE facility, killing one, wounding several others, before taking his own life. FBI, DHS, ATF are on the ground with Dallas PD and state authorities.

You know, when you own six a/c systems, you get to know your a/c guy on a first name basis.  Yesterday morning, the 21 year old south a/c unit, a 3.5 ton Trane, at the main office building literally melted its capacitor and wiring.  Plus the north a/c unit condensate drain was backed up again.  Since the north a/c was trying to cool the 5,300 ft2 building, it was really draining out the side roof pipe.  John’s son fixed both of them this morning for $351.18.

Now I have my roofing guy looking at the 21 year old roofs on all of my four office buildings to see if they need replacement.  He has patched three places on the roofs over the years.  Ah, I hear him walking on the roof now, the rain has let up for the moment.

    Binging update.

I’ve posted before about watching all the NCIS episodes.  We ran into a stumbling block a couple months ago.  Netflix only had so many seasons online, and to continue watching would require subscribing to Paramount+.  We aren’t ready for that yet.

So we flailed about for a while, and since we have Britbox, we watched all 6 episodes of Death Valley, which was kinda cute, and one episode of Professor T, which was interesting because I like Ben Miller (the original Inspector on Death in Paradise.)  Unfortunately, they rotate streaming of shows, and Professor T rotated out, so we didn’t get to watch more episodes.

We wrapped up the last season of Vera, and so that’s over now.  I like Brenda Blethyn, so I’m sad that’s all done.  Following up with her, we watched Kevin Spacey’s Beyond the Sea, where she plays Bobby Darin’s mother.  Her other movies are on my watch list, but none are available on our current subscriptions.

Early in this century, BBC did a series of Inspector Lynley mysteries that are quite well done.  I see they’ve re-done them in the last 5 years, but we have a ways to go before I try them.  We’re currently on season two of the older ones.

I keep going through “Best 100 Movies” lists by category or genre, and as much as I like old movies, I either get bored or they just don’t grab me.

I do have a list of re-watch movies for the Christmas season, so that will help stretch things out.

Since I like quirky things in general, there’s a category of movies I’ll call  Ochi chyornye movies.  I first noticed the song appearing in two of my favorite movies, My Man Godfrey and The Shop Around the Corner.  Then I found out Mischa Auer from My Man Godfrey also played a few notes of it in Ten Little Indians in his death scene.  I may need to track down the other movies listed in Wikipedia that have it.  Oddly, Wiki doesn’t show Ten Little Indians in the  Ochi chyornye article.

I shoulda bought the DVD.  Yes, the blu-ray looks and sounds good.  That was the point of buying blu-ray.  But what’s with hitting Stop and no resume?  Or going to go pee, put it on pause and come back to some studio logo and the only way to get rid of that was to eject the disc.  No other disc I have shoved into this player acted like this.

Anyway.  Two hours and fifteen minutes.  Good looking video and mostly good audio.  I’m pretty positive what I taped off of HBO in ‘87 or ’88 was pushing three and a half hours.  Filled most of a T-120 at slow speed.  So it seems like some stuff was missing.

Parts of the movie, the gamma, I guess, was messed up.  Like middle of the day and it’s all dark.
