Tues. July 8, 2025 – yeah, that seems legit…

By on July 8th, 2025 in culture, decline and fall

Another hot and humid day? Probably. Although it might be a bit cooler if it rains. It certainly won’t be dryer. Yesterday got cooling rain in the afternoon, and the morning, and the evening. There were periods of sun in between, and I’m sure your experience of the weather depended greatly on where you were in town. Kinda makes it hard to figure out what the weather and temperature for “Houston” might be, you know, for purposes of historical record and comparison over the long term…

I did auction stuff in the morning, and popped out for a pickup in the afternoon. Stopped at the HEB grocery store on my way home. Filled a cart, but didn’t buy much meat. Only 3 pounds of bacon (still 32c/oz) and about 8 pounds of hamburger. The burger was 80/20 but it was just less than $3/pound. That’s pretty good vs almost $5 last month. Sadly the only steaks on sale were ‘select’ grade and I can get prime or choice for about the same cost if I wait. I’ve got a freezer full in the mean time.

I did get a few things specifically to add to the stacks. I’ve got canned veg failing due to poor storage, so I’m starting to rotate some of that.

Oh, and as a data point, I had a plastic jug of whole milk in the fridge, sell by of May 16, unopened. It was fine. Tasted rich and creamy. It had been sealed and cold the whole time. Wife was not willing to drink it, pointed out it was less than $3, so I poured it out after my sample glass. We live surrounded by miracles and don’t ever notice.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups, and the kid needs to see the orthodontist about breaking her retainer wire. It broke the day after they looked at it for the last time, and told us it would be her “permanent” wire. THE DAY AFTER. There will be an expensive scan and a custom build to replace it. That’s just thievery at this point. But the kids have beautiful straight teeth, which is sort of a base level expectation anymore. Least we could do to help them on their way…

Hurricane season is upon us. So is summer storm season. Time to check the stacks, do some small engine maintenance, increase on hand fuel supplies, and all the other things we do to prepare. I used 10 gallons of fuel at the BOL in the boat, so I’m out of generator fuel there. I’ll be re-supplying that on my next trip.

So much to do, and so many demands on my time. Stacking is the easiest part…

“There are cornering lights that activate when turning.”

Dad had a 1990 Crown Victoria with that feature.

The old 1950s-1970s Citroën DS had lights that followed the motion of the steering wheel. I think it was done mechanically with wires off the steering column.

I wouldn’t say Tcl is misunderstood. The Ousterhout book is one of the great CS texts.

Tcl was simply not Hot Skillz at any point.

Node.js is effectively reinventing the Tcl wheel with worse syntax, and I’ve never seen anything more gross than the trend of DevOps pinheads scripting tmux because Expect has the Tcl learning curve to use effectively.

Shocking footage captured the moment hundreds of unruly Chicago teens shoved a lifeguard as they overran an upscale suburb’s public pool.

The ‘flash mob’ of around 200 teens and young adults swarmed Glen Ellyn’s Sunset village pool on Saturday, forcing their way past security to pack out the area.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14885607/Chicago-mob-swimming-pool-Glen-Ellyn-sunset-lifeguard.html

The group appeared to overwhelm the pool after first gathering at the Downtown Napier Beach, according to a social media advertisement promoting the ‘flash mob.’

‘We bringing (sic) 31st Beach to the burbs,’ the promo read. ‘No fighting!’

A new post on YT, Export Amazon Kindle Books to ePub in 2025!, popped up in my feed. This is a way to get ebooks off the newest Kindle Paperwhite, into Calibre, and convert to epub. Caveat, it is on a Mac, but someone posted it worked on Win/Linux.

I gave my daughter my Paperwhite (latest) when Amazon killed downloads. The SN should still be in Calibre, so I’ll try this YT method to see if I can DeDRM the latest book she bought, which should be past the “Amazon is screwing you with DRM” update In April/May. After that date the old Kindle app hack on Windows doesn’t work.

Someone also posted success with Kindle Unlimited books with this hack. It was on a Mac, I believe. Daughter has KU, so I’ll try that also.

It this works, I can grudgingly buy on Amazon through my daughter, if I can’t find a particular book somewhere.

I’m pro-abortion, but I never understood why PP received federal funding. It should run as a charity.

I’m of two minds about this.

Planned Parenthood is, at base, a political organization that offers, as a sideline, certain medical services.  Viewed in that light, they deserve neither respect nor funding from the taxpayers.  If they die, dry up, and blow away, no tears should be shed.

I do have a limited anecdotal defense of PP, however, from my own personal history.

My sister-in-law went through a horrific period.  They moved from California to Illinois, to be near family, started looking for jobs, and her husband  fell seriously ill with liver failure.  He went into his final coma and she discovered the next day that she was pregnant.

We called every agency we could discover to get her into prenatal care, and were rejected due to lack of funds and lack of insurance.  This includes at least 2 Christian pregnancy crisis agencies.  It turns out that their only interest was anti-abortion;  when they discovered she was not considering abortion, they were no longer interested in her case.

Being a Catholic family, PP was never considered, until other options were denied.  She called PP on her own, and they set up initial doctor visits for her.

So I can see how PP deserves a little bit of compensation like other Medicaid providers for actual services rendered.

But since that is such a minor part of their operation, well behind political lobbying and selling fetus parts, I still won’t miss them.

  12. MrAtoz says:

    For Mr. Nick:

Update: I just tried the method in the above post and it worked. I tried it on a KU book, “The Vampire in the Potting Shed”, on my daughter’s Paperwhite. The DeDRM worked since I already had the SN of that Kindle in the plugin. I connected my Boox Color Go and the book transferred and can be read no problemo.

    Caveats:

    This was on a Mac.

I have the Android File Transfer app installed, and as soon as I connected the Kindle, it launched. The file structure is the same as if the Kindle mounted as a drive, so I found the “downloads” folder on the Kindle right away.

I copied the entire contents, but only selected the KU book KFX file.

    On abortion:

I’m pro-life, but recognize whatever a Woman wants to do is her choice. SCOTUS made the right choice in sending the decision back to the States. There should be no Federal money for abortion on a whim. The States can decide what money they want to spend on abortions. There are States where Women can go for an abortion.

  18. Gavin says:

    On abortion:

I must dissent. I think one of the evils of the 20th century was the weaponization of abortion by the feminist movement. Prior to effective birth control, abortion was often the only way out, but there were such massive improvements in birth control that unwanted pregnancies would be expected to be rare, and could be dealt with on a medical or humanitarian basis. Or legal, for the unfortunates who were involuntarily pregnant. That, I think justifies abortion on demand. Unfortunately, the playbook seems to be to use a pregnancy or a child as a lever for financial gain, or coercion for other purposes, against men who can’t, in the current legal climate, decline financial fatherhood, frequently even when they are not found to be the father eventually.

My curtain question was not asked correctly.  Say the sliding door is 6 feet wide  The curtains are attached to the drapery rod with the funky looking hooks that slide into the curtain’s pleats.  The glides (?) the hooks hook on are X wide.  So I need to figure out how many glides are in 6 feet.  With pleats spaced 4 inches, that’s 3 per foot.  Say the glides are half an inch wide.

So I need to add a bit so the drapes fully clear the glass.  A 7 foot long curtain rod. ? That seems a little short.  Make it a 7 and half feet long curtain rod.

Knighton is no less an ass for coming late to the conclusion that Adamiak was falsely prosecuted. The linked article does not tell half of it.

Knighton continues to be an ass as he writes:

I mean, as bad as Ruby Ridge was, Randy Weaver did at least cut the shotgun barrel too short. It was entrapment, and that’s why he walked, but that still happened. The Branch Davidians in Waco probably made some illegal guns along the way, too. None of that warrants what happened in either case, but at least there was a germ of truth apparently hidden somewhere in the scandal.

    and

And Bodell should be flipping burgers for a living instead of serving as a federal agent.

No and no. “germ of truth” is totally irrelevant–Feds murdered people and were never held to account.

And Bodell should not be flipping burgers, he should be in jail along with all the federal agents that committed perjury and falsified evidence. They should each do hard time in the exact amount that Adamiak was facing from the charges they brought.

With terrible power comes terrible responsibility, and terrible consequences for misuse.

A Big, Beautiful Financial Weapon Against Illegal Immigration

Directo a México” is the official remittance program of the Federal Reserve Bank, facilitated through the FedGlobal service, which allows illegal immigrants to transfer money to Mexico’s central bank at no additional fee. Since 2003, after an agreement was signed by George W. Bush, users of U.S. financial institutions subscribed to Directo a México can send payments to any bank account in Mexico at no cost. New Yorkers can see such services advertised in Spanish on the subway; in smaller cities the transfer work is done by Wells Fargo, Moneygram, and check-cashing storefronts. States with large populations of illegal Mexicans, such as California and Texas, rank highest in remittance outflows.

It is a well-used system—in 2022, Mexico received $56 billion in remittances from the U.S., establishing the country’s position as the second-largest destination for such funds worldwide. Remittances from abroad accounted for roughly 4.5 percent of Mexico’s total GDP in 2022 (in some poorer Mexican states remittances comprised15 percent or more of their GDP) and form the largest single source of foreign income for Mexico, outstripping the income brought in by any other source, including foreign direct investment from the United States, tourism, and manufacturing exports. The total value of remittances increased by roughly 32 percent between 2019 and 2023, rising by an average of five percent per year. Mexico does not just send hundreds of thousands of illegal workers to the U.S.; its domestic economy outright depends on them working in el Norte. Much the same for the other leading countries, such as India, though much of its remittances come from H1-B visa holders.

    https://www.theamericanconservative.com/a-big-beautiful-financial-weapon-against-illegal-immigration/

Why does it not surprise me that Shrub put a system in place to aid illegal aliens? It’s like finding out that fedgov runs a fencing operation for gold and firearms.

Alien workers in the country legally should be able to send legally earned and taxed money home without incurring an exit tax.

Money not shown to be legally earned and taxed should be taxed at 50%: approximately 15% FICA, 25% federal, and 10% state.

Right now, the biggest immediate danger to the Kernel (what “Linux” is actually about) would be the feud over incorporating the Hot Skillz language runtimes.

The constant lurking threat which would end commercialization and paid developers contributing to the kernel is the possibility of courts deciding that an API can be copyrighted.

Linux is probably the largest Free Software community out there.  It is horribly fragmented but as Greg mentioned, there is a dictator, who is woke to a certain extent.

“Jeff Childers sums up what it means for us.  It’s a chilling scenario.”

I remember thinking during the second jab, what did I just put in my body ?  I had never had a vaccine that required two jabs.  And now I know it was not a vaccine.

Linus? Woke? Oh, God, no, but DEI hires are working paid corporate gigs as Kernel developers at places like IBM and Intel. He’s had to tone it down compared to even 20 years ago, but the Benevolent Dictator will still tear into people for stupidity.

Torvalds distribution of choice is supposedly Fedora, which is IBM’s “bleeding edge” packaging of Kernel and applications that eventually becomes Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Ballie Gifford needs cash. Their Moderna investment isn’t working out so well.

Vanguard is now the biggest single holder of Moderna, with VTSMX holding its usual 2-3% of shares outstanding.

Ballie Gifford also owns a big chunk of one of the DoD contractor cabal, Or did.

I thought it was Northrup Grumman, but that doesn’t appear to be the case now.

@alan, I’ve got the baofangs and I don’t really use them.  W doesn’t want to be on the end of a leash.   they are about what you would expect from $5 radios… the plastic is a bit odd, and the antennas are very poor generally.

I see  a lot of the retrevis radios at goodwill.   The lack of a charging base is a pain as you have to physically plug in the USB cable to charge.   I’ve got a dozen at the BOL that I can’t convince anyone to use.

If you want a real radio that will stand some abuse, and is easy to use, the motorola jobsite radios available at lowes and HD are probably the best.

Blister pack FRS/GMRS radios are not good for anything more than replacing shouting at each other.   The range is never as advertised and walls make a huge difference.

Cheap radios aren’t good, good radios aren’t cheap.

That said.    For $30 buy the baofangs and try them out.  You might find you never carry one, and any money spent would be wasted.   You can always get a better antenna, and an extra battery, and since you are using them at home, even a spare radio makes sense if they work for you both culturally and technically.

Regarding radios for comm in the compound, and leaving out commercial business class radio, your choices are:  MURS, FRS, GMRS, and Ham radio.  Here’s a good comparison article, though it’s biased by the manufacturere, the info is good.

We’ll rule out Ham radio right away, because if you were really interested in it, you’d already be looking into it.  Pros:  Widest selection of radio types, most flexibility, communication outside the compound.  Cons:  High bar to get licensed,  license is per individual  not family.  With flexibility comes complexity.

I, personally, would go with GMRS.  It still requires a license, but it’s $35 with no test, and you get more power  and thus more reliable comms over distance.   The license  applies to all residents at the license address.  There is a large community on the limited number of channels, so it’s very similar to CB radio.

Vegitation and building walls, especially metal ones, can be a problem with all UHF and some VHF radios.  FRS radios must all be handheld, with restrictions on antennas..

OTOH,  if MURS or FRS  works reliably for you, you may have your problem solved already.  And it’s pretty cheap to test it out.  Buy a blister-pack 2-radio package and see if it works.

Oh, and while I would never tell anyone to break the law, the FCC is too busy to police limited, idle, non-malicious unlicensed misuse of GMRS radios.  They do, occasionally, chase repeat abusers, but not the ones who use their HTs to  say “Hey, Honey, while you’re in the shed, bring me some canned beans.”

Poured rain at various times and in various places today.   I was moving around and caught a couple of cells, and then some moved over the house and caught me.

I did set up D2 with the pressure washer and turned her loose on the front walk.  She’s been playing a game that is a pressure washer simulator… now she can do the real thing, and get paid.

Her Tuesday activity put an  end to that for today.

The washer started on the first pull, despite being outside in the weather for the last year.   Black Max is a low end brand, but if you drain it dry, it seems to be durable…

I did have to replace some O rings on the hose connector.   I realized some time ago that having a bunch of O rings for various things would be a good idea and I bought a dozen assorted sizes boxes since then.  I found two that would work for the job.  O rings are funny, they are critical, they don’t last forever, and they need to be the right size, or close to it.   They are a maintenance item that is much easier to have on hand than to buy when needed.  I’ve fixed coffee machines and pressure washers, and other stuff I’ve forgotten.   Get a metric and imperial assortment, if you use them once in 10 years you’ll be glad to have them.

Just tossing this into the discussion……..

I have some 99% DMSO.    I’ve dabbed it on my toes.  When I think to do so.  It’s like taking my vitamins.  It seems to help a lot with that tingling numb feeling but I have no proof.

So finally, I learn how much to dose my ears for the constant cicada noise.  I’ll let y’all know how it goes.  Gotta get an eyedropper of some kind first.

No bad effects for me.  At most some “feels like a bit of sunburn” for a while.  And my fingers  tend to feel like I’ve washed them with gasoline.

The stuff is not expensive.  Read about it.  Give it a try.  Decide for yourself.

Cancer for her.  My Dad had cancer five times, non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma four times starting at age 42 and bladder cancer once from the radiation treatments.  It is a wonder that he made it to 86.  Sheer strength of will.

And William has almost as much of a bald head as I do.

Umlaut.  alt 0252  ü  As in aüslander raus.  I haven’t looked to see how it’s pronounced.  I suspect it’s not like the “aus” in Australia but more like “out” or Österreich for Austria .  It’s not the only word I mispronounce.

You’re close, but it’s “Ausländer”, pronounced roughly “Ows-lender”. The “Au” is a dipthong. Do you remember Sgt. Schulz in Hogan’s Heros saying “Raus! Raus!”. That’s the sound of the “au”.

Someone asked Trump about getting the Epstein files released. He got angry “Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein?”

Trump was one of the more frequent visitors to the island, and is likely hoping that all the uproar about immigration, tariffs, etc. will help people forget that little detail. He is probably the last person to want those files to be released…

My father passed away tonight.  I am so glad that he did not linger with all of the pain that he was having.

He lost the ability to talk Monday a week ago.  I suspect that he had a stroke with his 26 year old mechanical heart valve, a St. Judes valve, that was recalled 10 or 15 years ago with the cobalt flaking off that prevented blood clots.

Thursday would have been his and Mom’s 66th wedding anniversary.  Dad was 86 years old.

If interested, I will put his obit up here when done.
