Sat. Sept 5, 2026 – headed to the BOL, eventually

By on September 5th, 2026 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse, march to war

Hot? Not as hot. Humid? Not as humid. Pretty dang close though would be my guess. The rain yesterday evening did cool things down a bit. It was 77F around 10pm. I think today will be damp and hot, if it’s not actually raining.

I spent yesterday morning doing office stuff, and afternoon doing auction pickups, with evening used for auction prep. Most of the time prepping was doing something with the movie posters I have. I’ve been buying super cheap frames for them, just really enough to keep them flat and make them easier to sell. So I took the time to put some in frames. A Harry Plopper promo poster, a Frozen lobby poster, and a Tatiana lobby poster all got some sort of frame. The Tatiana posters are actually cooler than the movie. I know people would prefer well framed posters ready to display, but that costs more money than I’m likely to make from the sales.

Goodwill and thrift stores are great for finding frames, sometimes even with mattes that work, but the lobby posters are a weird size, bigger than 24×36 in both directions. And they still cost more than I’d like to spend. Now, if I was doing them for myself, if I had a home theater, I’d do something a bit nicer. But I’m not. Hopefully it’ll be worth the time.

Today I’m loading up and heading to the BOL at some point. If it’s nice out, I may even leave before W and the kid. If not, I might delay and hope the weather clears. Either way, I’ll be there tonight.

And then start working on the list. Weather permitting.

Always something more to do… but I like fixing things. It would be nice to make progress instead of falling farther behind.

Stack what you need. Use it to improve your situation.

    Saturday. Good morning.

W1 has decided she wants moules-frites for dinner. Off to the supermarket I will go…

Marinière or with garlic and cream? Decisions, decisions…

Thinking I might order a new deep fryer too, as ours (a wedding present) is old, puny and hard to clean; professional units from http://www.Fritel.be are the way to go.

Oh yeah, any one with a recent F-150 is scared of living this picture.

Something tells me he exceeded the maximum tow rating, which Ford’s warranty department will know due to the extensive telemetry sent back to the mothership nightly.

There are a lot of pictures of overloaded pickup trucks out there – people want to pull full rated loads (and above!), full time, at interstate speeds…

    —

Truck campers are of interest to me, since I have mused about getting one lately.

A first guess would be that virtually any truck with a truck camper that’s under an F350 in size is probably overloaded. And maybe half of the trucks of that size and above.

  4. Nick Flandrey says:

I got my Expy with the heavy duty cargo and towing package because technically, it would have been overloaded with 5 passengers and luggage in the standard trim package.

    ———-

Up and moving.   Sunny day, 89F and so humid the windows are condensing.   Weather station says almost 1″ rain received yesterday.   Seems like it must have been more, but then it always does.

Time to start thinking about loading up.

You have a V8. The manufacturers were rolling the dice when they started down the path of using turbo charged six cylinder engines to increase the tow ratings of half ton pickups and the SUV models sharing the platforms.

It’s Labor Day weekend so I might hit up Home Depot and pick up a couple extra batteries for my hand tools.

It’s actually more cost-effective to pick up a tool with a battery sometimes than to buy the batteries by themselves, I will have to see what they’ve got.  I can’t find a good battery for my 20 year old Makita 12 V drill so maybe I’ll pick up a second Ryobi 18 V.

  11. Ray Thompson says:

It’s actually more cost-effective to pick up a tool with a battery sometimes than to buy the batteries by themselves

Yes. I needed a new battery for my EGO tools. A battery alone is $129.00. A blower, with the same battery and charger, was $119.00 on sale at Lowes. I have, over the years, thrown away four chargers as I don’t need them. I have five currently.

  12. Nick Flandrey says:

Look on amazon for the battery converters.   Lets you use a battery you already have on the oddball tool…

    n

  13. lpdbw says:

If you have things that need a 12v power supply, Amazon also sells adapters for your 18 to 20V tool batteries.  I built an ammo-can power supply based on this.  I added a panel of USB, cigarette lighter, and Anderson PowerPole plugs.  It’s useful for operating my ham radios and my 12V Evolve computer and accessories when I go to the park.

And if the weather ever gets dry and below 90 degrees, I may go to the park again.  One can hope.

  14. nick flandrey says:

I’ve got some boards I pulled out of something that have nice big beefy 12v regulators on them.   I’m hoping to find time to use them with the 24v LiIon batteries I salvaged from the medical carts.  They’ve also got 5v regulators which are becoming more and more useful as more things are designed to work off of USB.

    Projects, Ive got em.

  15. Denis says:

The mussels part of our moules-frites turned out great.

I went for white wine as the cooking liquid rather than garlic and cream. W1 is mildly lactose intolerant, and she had enjoyed whipped cream on her apple tart at lunchtime, so I avoided giving her a second dose this evening.

The local upscale supermarket had really nice fresh mussels. September is a month with an “r”, so this is the proper start of the shellfish season in this part of the northern hemisphere.

Only one doubtful mollusc in two kilos of shells, and the whole batch smelled vaguely only of fresh salt water, not fishy at all. I still gave them all a thorough washing in four changes of cold water. Washing the mussels and removing the “beards” takes much longer than actually cooking them.

The “frites” part did not go so well. Apparently the old wedding-present deep fryer read my previous critical comment here, and decided to give up the ghost just after the first load of chips was dumped in. I had to drain off the oil and transfer it to a pot on the stovetop – proper old school, but it worked well.

W1 informs me the fryer was last used in 2015, so perhaps I ought not to be surprised it crapped out. I know I can count on my fingers the number of times it has been used in total, so Tefal is certainly not winning any prizes from me.

Unfortunately the resulting delay lead to the one-course meal becoming two courses – mussels, then chips. A bit unconventional, but we consoled ourselves by drinking the rest of the bottle of white wine during the inter-course interval.

In other news, Big River has managed to f up delivering my new PC from their Barcelona warehouse. It was supposed to arrive here on Thursday, then that switched to today, and now delivery is showing as “Wednesday next week, and if it doesn’t arrive, ask for a refund”. Not very inspiring of confidence, that.

It might be possible to find aftermarket depending on the model year, but the power circuitry on the EBay sourced Hecho en China head units won’t last.

Search Crutchfield for your model year to see what kind of mainstream units are available.

Big River has managed to f up delivering

I spend too much time dealing with working around “Seller does not deliver to PO Boxes” and “Invalid Address” when I use the street location, which is NOT my mailing address. Fortunately, there are several ways to include the box number that Amazon’s address validation doesn’t catch, which allows the post office to send it, or the pick up card, to the correct box.

I am slowly getting the half ton in shape for the winter. Today’s project was the radiator, easier than anticipated but as always, a couple of “insider” tips would have been useful. I’d forgotten that even if an aftermarket seller installs differentiating hardware (in this case the GM adapters for the transmission fluid cooler), they don’t seal them with thread tape or dope, it’s just to avoid having loose hardware in the box. Otherwise, fairly simple.

Brake cable next, I damaged one due to the failed (leaking) brakes and drove over a piece of power pole in my backyard. Should have left it alone, it was happy in it’s mildly inconvenient spot.

  21. lpdbw says:

Who did the prescribing? ARNP or Nurse Midwife?

Quick search found this on Reddit, so take it for what it’s worth.

A follow-on comment pointed out that NP#2 also prescribed Valium, because that’s what Dr. T had her on.

    1. Dr. Tufts – Lindsay found her online, presumably b/c she’s a board certified psychiatrist with an interest in anxiety, mood, and perinatal issues. She attended school at Cornell, University of Vermont and completed Residency at Boston University. She prescribed Zoloft and d/c it. Then gave Ativan and Benadryl for sleep.
    2. ER doc at South Shore, saw for insomnia, gave Trazadone
    3. Nurse Practitioner Julie Paul – Patrick’s mom’s friend who is handy with a prescription pad, but not so much into evaluation/assessment – prescribed Prozac, d/c it, then gave Remeron, Ambient, and Klonopin.
    4. Nurse Practitioner Rebecca Jollotta – L was apparently referred to her by Nurse Paul, she works in South Shore’s Perinatal Program. She started Lindsay on Seroquel.
    5. ER docs at MGH; they recommended admission to McLean Hospital or the PHP program at Rhode Island (see below)
    6. Rhode Island Woman and Infants’ Hospital’s Perinatal and Postpartum Team .(Dr. Zobeida Diaz, another board certified psychiatrist, is the attending psychiatrist named in the suit) – if we take L and P’s words as true, they believed her symptoms were due to medications, rather than purely depressive, and recommended weaning Seroquel. They presumably did not think she meant inclusion criteria for their program.
    7. Went to MGH ER again, they recommended admission to McLean
    8. McLean’s Inpatient team (there’s two attending named in the suit, Dr. Madva, Dr. Goodheart, but presumably she interacted with other clinicians or residents as well).
    9. Back to Dr. Tufts for follow up care

She also saw two therapists – Lateisha Dukes, LMHC, and Jennifer McAllister, LMHC

FWIW, I agree she was a victim of medical practice.  Would her children still be alive if she had received proper treatment?  Maybe.  Probably.  I’ve lived through severe depression, and it’s suffocating.  I never seriously considered suicide, but there were months when I went to bed and hoped I wouldn’t wake up again.

I also think she was guilty of murder.  Did she know what she was doing was wrong?  Definitely.

Another FWIW, I’d like to describe what it’s like to be on the right antidepressant at the right dosage, from personal experience.

Your life has gone from normal day-to-day to a constant thunderstorm that you have to walk through.  Constant downpour and lightning strikes continuously distracting you from having 2 minutes in a row to think.  Even if you had more time, it’s no good, because you can’t sleep at night so you’re exhausted by day.  Your therapist, who is good, can’t reach you, because you’re full of obsessive recurring thoughts, in my case revisiting the trauma that caused all this.  She recommends antidepressants to help.

I did enough research to tell my doctor no to his first 2 choices, Lexapro and Prozac, and ended up on Wellbutrin, a low dose.

Wellbutrin gave me an umbrella.  The storm was still raging, the lightning was still striking.  But I could function halfway, and my therapist could reach me, and I could process what she told me, and rebuild my sanity from the ground up.

I have been free of those drugs since 2012, but I will never forget the horror that was 2009-2011.

WRT psycho active drugs, the wiki lies article had a slightly different list, or maybe it’s trade vs pharma names, and the prescribers all looked like some version of “nottadoc” to me, although I really didn’t read it in depth.

She’s getting crazy support from the crazies.   Would they line up behind one of the many school shooters who were depressed and heavily medicated, or under the care of a “mental health professional”?  No they would not.   Would anyone even be considering that crazy excuses the shooter’s actions?  No they would not, because they HAVE NOT.  And some shooters killed fewer than three, who were strangers to them, and did it without putting their own hands on the victims.  She had to manhandle those kids to get any kind of elastic on them.  Their support is because she’s female.

I think that any woman who sees themselves in her to the point they can excuse strangling three children to death is in seriously bad condition and maybe they really don’t want to open the can of worms that says postpartum women are crazy and without agency.   Social media is already full of 20- and 30-somethings regretting their tattoos and life choices claiming that women’s brains aren’t fully developed until 25 and they shouldn’t be trusted with permanent choices like tattoos.  Gloria Steinem would likely punt them in the c#nt for saying stuff like that out loud where men could hear it.

I think all F-150s and Expeditions should come with the Max Tow package, it was $1,100 on mine IIRC:

    1. 5 row radiator instead of 3 row radiator
    2. a third radiator fan
    3. a transmission oil cooler and a transmission temperature gauge
    4. a 36 gallon gas tank instead of a 26 gallon tank
    5. a weird reverse steering wheel on my dash that I cannot figure out
    6. a frame attached towing hitch mount on the bumper
    7. three different wiring sockets on the bumper
    8. a locking rear axle for my four wheel drive (awesome in the mud)

This upgraded the towing rating on my F-150 from 10,000 lbs to 13,000 lbs.

Zoloft. “Vitamin Z”. “Mommy’s Little Helper”.

IIRC, when Zoloft went off patent, the manufacturer had a new patent issued under a new name for post-partum. This was … 20 ? … 25 ? … years ago so that patent probably ran out too.

I don’t remember the new name.

I know that the research for the new use was controversial since there was a question as to whether the drug could be expressed in breast milk.

When my son was a baby, we went through a several week period of non-stop colick which had the pediatrician stumped. Finally, one night, around 2 AM, I had enough and took both wife and child to the ER.

Once at the ER, my wife copped to using Zoloft.

Of course, since all men are presumed to be wife beaters until proven innocent, the ER doctor only said, “Well, that is an accepted therapeutic and unlikely to be expressed in breast milk.”

    Unlikely.

Once we got home, however, the colick stopped within 24 hours, and, later, my wife told me she flushed the Zoloft.

My EDC is more than slightly overdone.  Not quite the White Knight, but close.

I was gifted the Leatherman Free K2, a cousin of the K4 .  Could very well be operator error, but I don’t see how opening the spine tools can be accomplished one handed.  Blade is very sharp.

Instead, a Leatherman Wave Alpha , a FLASHLIGHT, micro prybar and a bit set live in a custom nylon belt pouch from an EDC forum.  The Olight razor knife with a ¼ in. hex socket on its spine lives in a right side hip knife pocket.  Currently, a BesTech Malware folder is clipped to left front pocket for steak dinner duties.  I stopped carrying some tiny Knipex wrenches, and  accessories  in a dedicated belt pouch although they were useful for the guy needing to  adjust his telescope in the hotel parking lot for last year’s April eclipse.  We won’t mention the Zippo in belt case, carbon fiber wallet, cash clip and a collection of micro tools on a keychain buried in front pockets.

The local Kroger chain has a holiday special: Bone in ribeye steaks for $8/#, US Choice.  Got a dozen and vac sealed for the freezer yesterday.  Might do it again tomorrow.

    It’s a short step to:

“women are crazy and without agency”

    then

    “women are property”

Gloria “Abortion is a Sacrament” Steinem started us down this road. Maybe there’s no hard turns along the way, just nice curves revealing the scenery ahead, and then you’re there before considering whether you want to be, or maybe it is perfectly predictable, even though the ones making the predictions were ignored, marginalized and shouted down.

@nick has a twin turbo V6.  All Expeditions since the 2015 model have the twin turbo V6.  That replaced the 5.4L V8 3 valve triton that I had in my 2005 Expedition.  Was a great motor until it broke a timing chain at 219K miles.

Reddit says that trailer is 7,500 lbs.  But the 10 speed tranny before the 2023 model has a problem with the planetary gear.  It is $6,000 to fix it (replace the planetary gear, the clutches, etc) at a reputable shop.  $12,000 at a dealer.

But if I was going to tow a fifth wheel trailer, I would get a F250.  Still the same ten speed tranny but you get the 6.8L gas V8.  Or the 6.7L diesel V8 for $10,000 more.

    So, here’s a hypothetical:

Lindsay Clancy is in the process of strangling one of her children and her husband come home. He discovers her desperately trying to finish the job and strikes her to fatal effect.

Is there a charge and if so, what is it?

If there is a charge, would a Soros prosecutor advance a theory that Lindsay has not committed a crime due to her condition, and therefore the use of deadly force to stop her from doing something that is not a crime is illegal?

  36. paul says:

    “women are property”

Nope.  Women are partners.  To raise children.  Man goes and make money to pay the bills.  AKA, brings home food.  Wife keeps the hearth burning and raises the kids, teach them how to walk, how to read and do math and all the rest.

I dunno.  If I was a woman, having a few kids to care for (little kids are much more fun than puppies and puppies are awesome) and housework and having supper ready when he gets home while my man is working for money to pay the bills…. Seems like a sweet deal.   Sure, sell Avon or Tupperware.

I’d say maybe 5 to 10%.  Most therapists are witch doctors.  I got lucky.

Random talking to friends, family, and strangers is, well, random.  You begin looping, and reinforcing yourself.  And no one calls you out on it.

    Diet?  No clue.

There is emerging research showing low-carb/carnivore diets put a lot of mental illness in remission.  Not conclusive yet, but there are a lot of case studies.

    re: drwilliam’s hypothetical

Soros prosecutors will do whatever they want to do.  Any resemblance to actual law or common sense is coincidence.

But the standard use-of-force approach says deadly force is justified if used when  there is an immanent threat of death or great bodily harm to yourself or a third party.   If she were strangling him, would it be justified?  Yes.  Same justification for a third party, the child.

Some rain on the way up, and some wet roads, but nothing showing here.

Just finished my dinner of leftover prime rib and half a cornish hen.

One other astonishing thing about the child murderer is that she was a labor and delivery nurse.

BTW I only invoked Steinem because she shuffled off this week.  She is now an ex-feminist.    I’m not advocating against treating young women as adults, but that’s where this sort of thing ends up.

Age of majority moved to 25?   Kinda makes sense in the modern age, but a real disservice to those who have their shite together.  It already moved from 18 to 21 for some stuff, and for health insurance it is what? 26?

Time to see about a tiny little fire on the dock.

BTW, Jean Grey is in the latest Spiderman movie, “Brand New Day”.

Forget enlightenment. Women are property, else men cannot be sure the children are his.

Make slavery great again! You will get the society you deserve.

Age of majority moved to 25?   Kinda makes sense in the modern age, but a real disservice to those who have their shite together.  It already moved from 18 to 21 for some stuff, and for health insurance it is what? 26?

The Texas State Legislature was desperate and mandated that kids could be on their parents health insurance until age 26 about 20 years ago.  80% of babies in Texas were born and paid for by Medicaid back then.  Incredibly expensive.  I am not sure what the number of babies paid for by Medicaid is now but I doubt that it dropped very much.

Had my tiny little fire.   It’s 76F but the air is saturated.   Very unpleasant without a breeze.  I ran the portacool mainly for the fan to move some air.

Radio was good tonight and the overcast cleared enough to catch a little bit of Milky Way.  At least for a while.

Time for a snack, shower, and bed.

added.  Saw an article recently that the rise in dementia can be linked to the increased use of statins to lower cholesterol levels.  If proved, there will be  a settlement as big and far reaching as the tobacco settlement.

Trying to enslave the woman in the house would only lead to bad outcomes.   The Victorians had a cure for it, since you could buy most poisons at the local chemist’s…

  49. OldGuy says:

@Nick – you got the statin and dementia link backwards. From one of many stories (link)

Starting statin therapy shortly after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may not only protect the heart — it may also be linked to a lower dementia risk.

A large study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich on Aug. 30 found that adults who began taking a statin within one year of their type 2 diabetes diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of developing dementia over 10 years compared to those who did not take the medication within five years.

Even for those who delayed starting a statin for one to five years, there was still a 10% lower relative risk, according to the findings, which were published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.

Did you leave something out of your tale?

Wash out your mind with soap. I am a married man!

(Who preferred not to burn the house down by neglecting a pot of boiling oil on a gas stove…)

lpdbw, thank you for the candid description of your experience. It sounds awful. I am glad you came through it and back to a better situation.

@denis, did they sell it too cheaply, and now have decided to not deliver?

I am wondering that myself, although I didn’t consider I had got a great bargain at 1350 bucks for 16gig RAM and 256gig SSD. Their tracking is showing the item as having left the warehouse, so maybe it is just delivery difficulties… we’ll see next week.

My EDC is more than slightly overdone.

    Not if you are Batman!

… little kids are much more fun than puppies and puppies are awesome…

One of my close friends just sent me a photo of her own pre-teen pup with his new spaniel puppy. Too cute for words.

Nick, don’t forget to fix that tail-light! I wish the cops here would check on practical things like that: there are entirely too many cars driving about with only one working headlight, miswired brake and reversing lamps, or with fog lamps turned on in clear conditions (my pet hate, that one).

The Victorians had a cure for it, since you could buy most poisons at the local chemist’s…

The socially understood euphemism for that, as used in obituaries, was “choked on a fishbone”.
