Wed. Mar. 16, 2022 – get ready for amateur hour

Cool and clear again in Houston.   I’ll be headed north though.

As soon as I get all my stuff in one bag and loaded up, I’ll be headed out.  Might be a bit later as I need to pick up a toilet on the way, and they may not be available at the first crack of morning’s light….  or something.

I feel a couple of big posts coming up but I think I’ll just prime the pump by asking you to do this.

Start thinking about what you can and will do to supplement or replace failing systems.   For example, water only comes out of the tap sporadically and is of dubious quality.   This is the case for the Yucatan Peninsula and yet they cope…

Or power is subject to random outages.

Or emergency services are limited.

Figure out what you can do, what you need, and plan to stack it up soon.

Fri. Feb. 25, 2022 – Go Texans! day here in The Great State of Texas. Not so much fun elsewhere in the world.

Cold and damp.  Still.  And like yesterday.   Gah.  One star, would not recommend.

Spent yesterday sitting down.  Back was right on the edge of being an issue and I didn’t want to push it.  Did some light housecleaning.  Put some stuff away.  Did laundry.  Normal domestic bliss.

Quite the contrast to the people in Ukraine.  Sucks to be them right now.  Anyone STILL think this isn’t one of those periods in history when everything changes?  Show your work…

There will be some lessons for us if we have eyes to see.   So far, it’s that when you have an army at your border, it is time to leave the city.  In three or four days people are going to be pretty dang hungry.  Water, power, and other ‘normal’ stuff is about to be in very short supply.  The subways are going to be hellholes in short order if this proceeds.

I guess this breaks the McDonalds maxim, that no two countries that have McD’s have ever gone to war with each other…

And longer term, as others online have pointed out, Ukraine’s exports are not going out, now or anytime soon.   They were a pretty big exporter.   The whole world is going to be crunched for anything they’re no longer selling.  That means more shortages and dislocations coming.

Probably not too late to add some more to your stacks.   Food would be, and is, my priority now.   I don’t think you could have “too much”.

Putin just acted to secure some good farmland and food that would have been exported.  China has been buying up food for the last couple of years.   There may be  a shortage of fertilizer and fuel for our farmers this spring too.   Add a flood, or a wet spring, and we’re triple F’d.

Some quick predictions.

More turmoil in the money markets.   No one knows how this will play out and the longer it takes, the more conservative people will get, and that won’t be good for speculative markets like the US stock market.  Food prices will continue to rise, and shortages will become apparent.   It will take a while for this specific cause to become effects, but it will.   Just in time is late now.

Putin will “finish the job” to whatever degree he has planned.    Slow Joe will try to involve us, as he’s been taking money from Ukraine for a long time and they will want something for their money.   He’s really caught on the horns of a dilemma with that.   Our woke and worn out .mil will drag their feet hoping for a fait accompli so they won’t have to engage.  There is zero popular support for engaging.   Putin knows that and will do everything possible to avoid dragging the US into the conflict.  We will be involved though, at some level.  Be very suspicious of any casus belli.

China will move on Taiwan.   There hasn’t been a swift response to Putin, there won’t be one to Xi.   China will move when they can be fairly sure they control the fabs, so the workers don’t ‘spike the guns.’   Probably hostages, sleeper agents, and possibly spec ops teams moving in first will all be part of the takeover.  China controlling world chip production will be bad.  Really bad.  Taiwan wiping out the fabs would be worse.   Really worse.  If I was a top guy in a chip fab, I’d be sending my family to Idaho, with armed security.  Tough, when you probably won’t see them again, but better than having them used as leverage.  That assumes the top guys don’t all flee too.  I can totally see that, leaving the slightly lower guys with a higher sense of honor and duty to stick it out.

I guess we’ll see how it turns out, but I’m going with “bad for Ukraine and Taiwan” until I see some evidence of another path.

And I’m going to the store today.  I’ve got empty buckets.

Stack all the things.   Seriously.

Sat. Feb. 19, 2022 – it certainly keeps me busy…

Cold and windy, and cold.  Yesterday started cold and stayed cool all day, although the sun did come out and it did warm up somewhat.

I ran a bunch of errands during the day.   Cooked some of the $5/pound T bone steaks for dinner.  Read.  Went to bed early.  I was wiped out.

Today I’ll be helping my wife upgrade the lighting in the theatre in the school D1 attends.  I’ll also be taking a bunch of BOL stuff to my secondary.  I’ve got a plan, but it’s probably not a good one… gonna try anyway.

While I do believe bad things will be happening and bad times will come and get worse, I still have to live my life like there IS a tomorrow.  Hence the volunteer hours at school, and the getting together with other families, and buying a lakehouse…   Forecast calls for pain, but the forecasters are wrong all the time too.

So stack, but LIVE too.

Fri. Jan. 14, 2022 – stuff to do, and not really psyched to do it

Cold, turning to cool, and damp of course. Whatever pressure zone moved in yesterday blew out the clouds and we had beautiful blue skies. So I spent most of the afternoon modeling my house in sketchup.

If we can’t buy a getaway place, my wife is convinced we need to remodel here. Which means moving somewhere else for a year. And a lot of other things. It’s nuts. But if anything is going to move in any direction, models will help. Oy vey, I’m not amused.

I’m headed to my client today, because yesterday got eaten by relationship maintenance.

All I can do is shake my head and try to keep moving. If you stop moving you get crushed.

Stack something. You’ll be glad you did.

Wed. Jan. 12, 2022 – worse, not better. “There’s a lot of ruin in a country…”

Cool and damp again, maybe a little rain… we got just a few drops at the end of the day yesterday. The rest of the day was rain free if still damp-ish and overcast.

That meant I was able to take a load to the auctioneer. But. I loaded the truck about 3/4 of the way from one unit, and moved to the other unit, thinking that I’ll just grab the quick and easy stuff from both. Very strange. My lock is gone, and there is another lock on my unit. Office is closed on Tuesday but they agree to send a manager from a nearby storage facility, because storage companies ADD a lock to the unit if there is an issue. They don’t cut YOUR lock. There were some other ‘tells’ too. All of the company locks have a little blue sticker on them and this one didn’t. No issues with the unit were in the file, and I know I paid online…

In the mean time, I take my partial load to the auctioneer, and he freaks. This is all he wants this week. WTF? We had a long conversation, he was gonna take it all. Well, not so much. It’s possible the big boss objected or knew they had other stuff coming in. In either case, I don’t get to empty any storage, nor move much from the house.

On my way back to storage, the manager calls and will meet me there. I swing by home to get a new lock, and grab my battery grinder just in case.

Met the guy and we cut the lock. Ransacked. Robbed. Burgled actually. From the door I could see they went through most of the bins, tossing them around, and grabbing what they wanted. I haven’t disturbed the mess yet as I’m hoping for a police investigation, but I can see the golf clubs are gone, as well as a huge subwoofer, and every bit of electronics. They got at least $1000 in resell value, and that’s just what I can see at first look.

The facility manager is going to look at video for the last week. When she finds something, I’ll call the cops or the constable’s office, and try for an investigation. This is a pretty sophisticated operation. They have surely hit more than my unit as there were a LOT of units with the disc locks on them. They broke in, stripped out what they wanted, then put a lock on the door to disguise the entry. For most renters, I’m sure it would be weeks or months before the theft was discovered, and any video would be long gone.

This is the second time in as many months the one of my storage units has been broken into. In the other facility, a tenant cut locks in a hallway and entered a bunch of units. Caught on video. My unit had only networking and industrial stuff, so they didn’t steal anything. The management noticed the cut locks, and investigated. Then called me and let me know what happened. I met a real nice guy (and mentioned it here at the time) when I went to verify my stuff was still there.

I’ve been a storage unit renter for decades. Not all at once, but cumulatively, and I’ve had the ones here for a while. I’ve never had an issue before. Never heard of anyone having issues with theft, and certainly not a thief who hides the crime with his own lock. This is a big change.

Add in the other indicators. Supply chain issues and shortages. Inflation. Street violence. Political violence. Silencing opposing views. Increasingly ‘othering’ rhetoric and demonizing of opposing groups. Rule of law is collapsing. Social norms are fraying. Everything is getting worse. And I don’t see it stopping anytime soon.

Yeah I know, doom and gloom. The sky is falling. The end is near(er)… But tell me where I’m wrong. I’d love to be wrong.

Look to your personal security and physical security. Look to your personal supply chain. When you see it, buy it. And stack it high.

Fri. Jan. 7, 2022 – still more work. Stacking up the FRNs…

Warmer during sunlight, cooler to cold during no-sun-light. Freaking 44F when I went to bed, with no fanfare from the weatherliars. For some reason, the A/C was running despite the low outdoor temps. Yesterday was nice during the day but it did get chilly when the sun went away.

Spent the late morning and all the rest of the day working at my client’s house. I did get some things off my list, and we’re finding things we couldn’t find until the other work was done. Programmer is making progress too. The system was about 90% functional when we left for the day. I should be able to actually do some of my lower priority items today. And I can take another whack at some of the networking issues.

Like the wifi coverage. I’m using 4 ubiquiti AC Lite access points that are supposed to have hundreds of feet of coverage. It’s a big house, but FOUR and there are dead spots everywhere. LOTS of metal and brick, heavy plaster treatments on walls, and weird architecture with a lot of angled walls and ‘nooks’, really high ceilings. I need to move pretty much three of the four, and figure out why I don’t have MASSIVE signal levels. Freaking 30 feet from the wap, I can lose the connection. And with the config problems I had, I’m not convinced they are all actually on and working properly. Add the config problems to the physical location problems, and I’ve got my hands full for days if I spend the time fighting it.

We’ll see what I get to while helping the programmer get through his list.

————————————————————————————–

So this week I’m stacking money. Money makes everything easier, and let’s us turn one thing into another. It’s a good prep that often gets downplayed or overlooked. It’s not perfect, you can’t eat it, but it will get you food to eat.

In an inflationary economy, you need all the money you can get, and as quickly as you can get it if you want or need to buy things.

Think about what you’ll do for money if things go even more pear shaped. Got skillz? Got stuff other people want? Control access to something? Got people who know and appreciate that you have the stuff or the skillz? Better to do business with someone known to you than not.

Skills, stuff, or money, stack it as high as you can.

n

(btw, I’m still following my prime directive. My prepping can’t negatively affect my life, and shouldn’t be anything irrevocable. That leaves a lot of room for interpretation, but does provide guidance and a gut check.)

Fri. Dec. 31, 2021 – short time. If this were a cop movie, the year would be shot for sure.

Still warm and damp, but the national map has bad storms in our area, and we’ve got some cold on the way. Yesterday was nice enough. The overcast was patchier than I thought. As soon as I got away from home, it cleared up almost entirely. Looked bad in the distance, but north and northwest was clear. Our weather is screwy at the best of times.

I did my pickups. One of the gocart things will need more wheels. The other one looks good though. The loft bed had a damaged box but the parts look good. I’m pretty sure assembling that will be on my agenda for today. My wife and D1 finally got most of the closet system installed in D1’s bedroom, although I think I’ll have to get involved today with some additional parts from the stacks. There’s a lot of cleaning and organizing and throwing out going on this week.

Someone mentioned it is a good time for introspection and reflection. And it is. So I should embrace that, right?

It’s hard to stay focused for such a long time. Criminals on the run get tired and make mistakes and they get caught. Ebola workers get tired and flub their PPE or cleaning routine, and die. EOD techs, well, if they have a bad day then everyone knows it.

So I have to not be that guy. I need a pause that refreshes, and a re-dedication to the cause. There, did I enjoy it? Sure did boss.

Let’s go Brandon, and let’s get back to stackin’. There is a whole new year coming…

n

(and totally trivial, I’ve decided to move my “post” time up by ~10 minutes so Brad can read today’s post first! Or at least I feel like I’m missing him by about 10 minutes.)

Sun. Dec. 26, 2021 – the stockings were hung by the chimney with care…

Cool and clear, damp though. Mid 70s if we’re lucky. Beautiful day for Christmas, with a clear blue sky and shirtsleeves weather. Beautiful Boxing Day too.

The house is a happy mess. Piles of cookies in the kitchen, piles of presents throughout the house, and the stockings scattered around, spilling their chocolate-y goodness on the couch, the chair, and the floor. Maybe we’ll get some cleaning up done. Then again, maybe not.

Taking it easy today, open to whatever comes. Maybe I’ll organize something. Maybe I’ll fix something. Maybe I’ll just watch movies. Whatever, it’ll be all good.

Treat yourselves a bit this week. Take some time amongst the hustle and bustle of year end activities. Who knows what the new year will bring. Time to smell a rose or two.

Fri. Dec. 24, 2021 – so close you can taste it…

Cool and clear, fairly nice if it all goes to plan. No chance of snow for Christmas. Don’t laugh, it’s happened before, or missed by only a day or two. Doesn’t stick, but it was here long enough to get pictures last time.

I’m ready for the night’s festivities and tomorrow. My family always opened family gifts on Christmas Eve, at night. My wife’s family opened a gift or two, but did the bulk on Christmas morning. She’s been pushing in that direction for years and I think she’s got the kids convinced it’s the right way… another tradition falls, but a new one rises. Change, I don’t like it much in my life. Which is either funny or completely understandable considering I’ve made a career being able to deal with rapid and dramatic change, and just get the job done. Live entertainment and event management is nothing but change and flexibility. So I think it’s natural I would minimize it wherever I could. Others might differ.

Of course, life is change. We can no more stop change than we can hold back the tide. Doesn’t keep some people from trying. We are living through a period where, I think, everything changes. Big changes. Like from 1916 to 1948 kinds of changes. Flexibility and preps are my strategy for getting through to the other side. I hope ‘shooting the b@stards in the face’ won’t be necessary. I guess we’ll see.

In the mean time, take it day by day, find joy where you can, and count what blessings you do have.
