Tues. July 11, 2023 – still at home

Hot and humid, little chance of rain. The window thermometer in the kitchen read 112F yesterday afternoon. The sensor is always in the shade. I’m inclined to believe it. Holy Moly it was hot. REALLY hoping today isn’t as hot.

Did get some stuff done yesterday. Took the rebar to the scrap man. 442 pounds at 5c/lb netted me little over $21. Better than nothing and it had to leave the BOL some way anyway. Still, that’s a bit more than half of what steel was bringing just a few months ago. Would not have been worth making the effort if the effort was much more. Two cut off blades were used… a third would have broken the bank.

Did a quick pickup and stopped at the Habitat reStore on the south side of town. Their prices have gone WAY up, and their stock has gone way down. This store used to always have tile, doors, and paint, as well as new cabinets. They have only a few of those items now. I’m still looking for doors for the BOL, and not finding any deals. I want to try the reStore that’s north of Houston again because they always have used cabinets, and some doors. I want some cabinets for the laundry area at the BOL, and the key to buying used is to keep checking for new arrivals. I might get to there today since I’ll be on the north side of town anyway.

Or I might not. I still have to get the tire I found half inflated checked and repaired. I still need to go to HEB for the stuff I buy there. I still need to hit Lowe’s for the electrical stuff I need, and I still have a couple of other things to do at the house too, before heading back to the BOL. The net-net on all that is I’ll probably head up on Wednesday.

Some of the Costco run, and part of the HEB groceries will be added to the BOL stacks. There is always something to be added, or refreshed. Your own stacks are probably the same, so give them some love this week… Stack it up.

Sat. July 8, 2023 – non-prepping hobby day, and brain fuzz

Hot and humid in Houston. Whoddathunkit? The rain did cool things down a bit, for a while, but it’s summer, and summer is hot and humid. It would be nice if it stayed below 100F and 89%RH

Yesterday I tidied up and headed home from the BOL. I have a pickup truck bed full of scrap iron used as rebar. That will go to the scrap man later today, if I get to it. And I’ve got a tire to run by my tire guy to find and fix the link. It’s small and slow, but I really don’t want to get stuck changing it somewhere in 110F sun.

But first, I’ve got my non-prepping hobby meeting. Meatspace. One of the guys who is also a ham is supposed to be giving me an antenna at the meeting. And we’re planning for our regional tradeshow/swapmeet/convention which I should attend as I’m a committee chair this year. In other words, stuff to do.

So I won’t be sleeping in, trying to clear some of the fuzz out of my head. The intense focus and effort of the past two weeks has me stumbling around and not thinking straight I’m so worn out. Maybe tomorrow. Or maybe I’ll sleep when I’m dead.

I also need to shop. I’ve been gone for 2 weeks, took about half the fresh stuff in the house up to the BOL, and no one does any real shopping while I’m away, apparently. Nor do they restock the bathrooms even though they have been walking past the bale-o-TP for a month. So I’ll be stacking this weekend. If not tomorrow, then Sunday, at least the non-Costco parts. I don’t go in there on weekends if I can help it.

So stack some stuff, lest you find yourself with empty refrigerators, and no wipes for your bottom…

Fri. July 7, 2023 – finally headed home, for a bit

Hot and humid again. Brief respite after the storm yesterday, but back to normal summer now. 90s, for temps and humidity, but it will start nicer.

Well, I finally finished the major projects and some of the ‘since we have the machines and dumpster here’ projects too. There are some follow on new projects, like stairs from the house down to the yard and lake… since I took out the broken concrete and brick stairs, and some landscaping, like grass seed at a minimum. I did complete a massive amount of work.

So onward. Home for a couple of days, then maybe back with one child. Other child has camp, and wife suggested I could head back up. Hmmm.

Today I’ll be getting some good measurements for supplies to build the stairs. I’ll be looking for cheap and quick alternatives when I get home to my fast internet. Maybe a salvage set, or something industrial will pop up. Stranger things have happened.

Then I’ll be packing up and closing up. Oh, first I’ll fuel and wash the rentals. Do NOT want to get charged, although how realistic is it to expect construction equipment to come back clean? I’m certainly not hand detailing them, but I’ll hit them with the pressure washer and knock off most of the red mud.

It’s been a long couple of weeks and I’ll be glad to be home, if only for a few days.

Been stacking up skills, and improving my position. Been showing the locals I’m not afraid of hard work, and can get things done. Those are good things.

Stack good things.

Thur. July 6, 2023 – still at it. Crazy, huh?

Hot and humid. Cool enough to start, but broiling under the sun later in the day. Highs yesterday were mid 90s. Probably get the same today. I’m blessed that most of the work I’m doing is in the shade.

I continued working on the side patio. I’ve been grabbing a task here and there as I drive the machine back and forth to the piles of dirt and the work area, like leveling the area in front of the entry door, or pulling a root ball, so MOST of the regrading of the front yard is actually done, or very close to done.

I should be able to finish the grade and backfill on the side in the morning, leaving a few other ‘could do’ ‘would be nice’ and ‘you’ve already got the machine…’ jobs. Pulling down the concrete steps from the house to the yard is technically one of those optional tasks, but it needs to be done and I’ve got the machines…and the dumpster still has room in it.

The machines are crazy useful.

And I’m getting pretty good at fixing pvc pipe that was/should be/will be buried, after breaking it.

Still have all the dock electrical to do, but don’t have the panel. Wife has approved doing that next visit. I need to secure it before I leave though. I’ve been here a long time. It’s a bunch of massive projects. Time to finish and get home.

Always working to improve my situation. If I can’t stack, I’ll work… but stacking is good too.

Wed. July 5, 2023 – just keep swimming, just keep swimming…

Hot again. Humid still. But a tiny bit less obnoxious than it’s been. It was a bit cooler overall yesterday, thanks mostly to some overcast. I’m hoping for the same today.

I worked all day. They did swap out the dumpster so I was able to move my concrete rubble in only one step. Guy said they have been going through office staff (dispatchers) like kleenex, and they don’t understand that some customers can be put off, but some need their dumpsters right away. One of the jobs he did was a pickup at a business that was closed for the holiday, but they told him to reschedule me. He called and we got it worked out. Sharp guy, and dedicated.

I put some details in yesterday’s comments about the day and spending some time with the kids. It was a good day.

Today I’ll be cranking away. If I don’t finish, I’ll have to extend the rental again. Still cheaper than getting the machines back later. Especially since finding time for ‘later’ is difficult. This was a crazy amount of work but this is also the time I set to do it. So I grind on…

Sometimes preparedness is just grinding on. Stack something.

Always be working to improve your situation.

Tues. July 4, 2023 – Happy Independence Day

Hot and humid, but maybe a little tiny bit less so. I’ll take a 4 degree improvement, yes I will. It was slightly less hot yesterday, but there was less of a breeze so it was actually kinda nastier in toto…

Spent the day on the machines breaking concrete and moving sand. Joy. Getting near the end though.

Today the septic guy is coming by to get the stuff I broke back together. Dumpster swap is supposed to happen too. Thankfully I didn’t have a ton of rubble to divert to a pile, only a couple of buckets full. I sure hope I erred on the side of caution and the dumpster isn’t too heavy.

I have an enormous pile of sand to get rid of. There will be some sort of ‘free sand’ offer locally, at some point. Somewhere between 60 and 80 cubic yards enormous. And I might be underestimating. Imagine two open top 40 yard dumpsters worth…

Had another neighbor come by and ask the details about what we’re doing and how the house leveling worked. Dumpsters and earth moving for a couple of weeks will get attention, I guess.

So more connections and conversations. Good things to stack up.

Stack some of your own, while you are contemplating the freedoms we’ve lost over the last 10, 20, and 40 years.

Celebrate Independence, in every thing you can.

Mon. July 3, 2023 – back to work slacker.

Hot and humid is the order of the day. It was a little bit cooler yesterday or I’m adapting, because I didn’t end the day soaked to the skin. I only had sweat dripping from my eyelashes and nose twice.

With the late start, I got on the machines in the afternoon. Stripping the side patio back is going well so far. Finished the day at a good point, and there wasn’t really room for more in the dumpster anyway. They are supposed to swap it out again this am, and it needs it.

Played board games with the family before working and after, yesterday. Extra kid is fitting in well (D2’s friend, not X1) she’d been kinda quiet and reserved previously. Smack talking and elbow throwing now 🙂 (metaphorically speaking)

We played “Code Names” after breakfast. It takes partners with a shared cultural frame of reference to do well. When paired with my wife, we do very well. When paired with D1, I don’t win. We played “Ticket to Ride” after dinner. That is one of my favorites. I recommend it for any group, including mixed ages. There are a couple of different strategies, and styles of play. You have to make decisions and build off them but also be willing to abandon a plan and find a different choice.

The kids were playing Rumikub most of the day. I like it too, if you have players that don’t take all day on every turn.

Wife painted trim when she wasn’t playing with the kids or moving my stuff around. (kidding, I kid…)

A good day, until the plumbing mess at the end.

Stack up the good times, they can sustain you in the bad.

Sun. July 2, 2023 – turning money into smoke and noise, God Bless America!

Hot and humid, likely to be just like yesterday. Too hot to be in the sun, but ok in the shade. High 90s, low 100s and sweaty like a sex worker in the non-denominational house of worship of your choice…

Took a bit of a break yesterday. I was fried. So I slept (mostly) for 10 hours and felt better. Still easily frustrated and fighting with life which is not my normal state. Once I got on the machines I was better.

Built the stairs I should have built the day before. They’ll do just fine for a while, up to a year if needed. Now I have to build a set for the other patio door too.

Spent 5 hours breaking concrete. Dumpster is pretty near full so I’m glad I ordered one for Monday. Still got plenty to remove.

Then we had the community Independence Day celebration. A couple of the neighbors pool their money and put on a 3/4 sized professional fireworks show. They also have a party with food and a live band, and they ask for donations to the local volunteer fire department. The show lasted for 40 minutes and had all the stuff a big pro show would, just slightly smaller, and they don’t go as high. Still freaking awesome. And we watched from just across the cove, about 100-200 ft away.

After the fireworks the band played another set. We could hear them just fine, and it wasn’t too loud.

The guys organize this every year and our little subdivision takes part. This is “community”. This is what we are very aware that we are joining. We are joining with an existing group. I think a lot of people don’t consider this, or give it enough weight when looking for a BOL or a retirement place. Especially in rural areas, you are joining THEM. Act accordingly.

You need to work on fitting in, and starting to take your place in the web of favors, obligations, service, and support. You probably don’t have the family ties the locals do, so you will have to work harder. You need to be ‘known’ to them and be well thought of.

And in this mostly working class community, I think I just ratcheted up my cred by running the machines and doing the work myself. That is an unexpected bonus for something that was driven by necessity. Being known as a hard worker, and someone who can run a machine all day carries a lot more weight than a degree with a lot of the guys in the area. Don’t know if it will pay off, but it can’t hurt.

—————
Today I’ll probably start with fixing the drain for the washing machine. That is nice and quiet and the area should be in shade in the morning. Later, I’ll start back in on busting up concrete. SO MUCH CONCRETE.

Join a community. Ham radio, some service org, school volunteer, or whatever you are interested in. Get out of the house and DO something. You need to be a part of your local community, if for no other reason, so that you can recognize when things are normal and when they are not. Trouble or help is most likely to come from those nearest to you. Get to know who they are.

Stack up some community.

Sat. July 1, 2023 – fireworks tonight!

Well, it’s hot and humid again. 84F at midnight, slightly cooler in the morning, getting warmer all day. Peaking in the sun well over 100F. Summer, in other words. It was scorching hot in the late afternoon sun, despite a gently breeze and being next to the lake.

I spent the day getting the truck packed, and getting back up here. A stop for diesel fuel, a stop at Home Depot for wire, (and they were out of what I wanted) and some unusual traffic had me getting back up here late. And because my mind is fried, I jumped into electrical work when my time and limited daylight would have been better spend building the stairs to go under the back door, which gives access to the yard and the lake…

The electrical fought me all the way, so I’m headed to the store today, at some point. I hate it when a plan doesn’t come together.

I think I’ll sleep in an hour, I went to bed early too, and maybe that will get my brain back to at least 7 of 8 cylinders. I can’t keep up the pace forever, and I have hit a wall. Hopefully I can reset that with a bit of extra rest. C’na do anythin’ ’bout the ‘eat tho.

Our neighbors do a massive fireworks show for the 4th, and they are slated to go tonight. BIG show. Good times. I’ll have the kids decorating the dock with bunting and flags. Might fly an extra flag or 12 too. This weekend, I’m stacking up community.

Stack some yourself.

Fri. June 30, 2023 – “ordinary f#cking people, I hate ’em.”

Hot and humid.  It’s the season!  There was a beautiful cool breeze off the lake yesterday and it was very nice in the shade.   For the limited time I was in the shade.   The rest was as hot as Satan’s scrotum.

I did general cleanup and details before cutting the grass and heading home.   I stopped to pick up stuff on the way.   Got some stuff out of storage.   Went to Lowe’s.  Had to clean and organize the entire fitting section to find the electrical parts I needed, and they were out of stock on one item.   Took WAY longer than it should have to shop.   But I got everything on my list and should be able to get the plumbing and electrical stuff done without needing another trip.

So I’m headed back up to the BOL as soon as I get all my stuff together.  I still need to pull a few things out of the garage, like the actual wire I’m using for the new circuits.   I found that the problems were even more dangerous and absurd with the dock and the dockhouse yesterday when I opened the panel and really looked.   NO breakers for the dockhouse, just live conductors.  I live a charmed life, that it was broken when I thought it was safely off.

Once it’s bad enough that it’s all coming out, is it really necessary to look at all the ways it’s bad?

My wallet is over $1000 lighter, but one more safety issue will be out of the way.   Good thing I was prodded into doing the fix.  I just don’t like to have things jump to the front of the line in this particular way.

I was able to pull a bunch of stuff out of stock (and stacks.)   But I’ve never used the pvc conduit before so I had to buy all of that.  Well, three sticks of 1″ I pulled from stacks, because I’d picked them up from outside another business – hey one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.   $30 in conduit?  I was pretty sure I’d use it eventually.

So stack stuff you think you might need.  Stack stuff that is useful and cheap or free but could cost more later.   Stack stuff…

nick

added- checked on my grapes when I got home.   They are the red table grapes and while most are still green, they are sweeter, and there are a few that are red, and pretty delicious.
