Fri. Mar. 22, 2024 – …the corn is as high as an elephant’s eye, and it looks like it’s climbin’ right up to the sky…

Cool, overcast, dreary, and a chance of rain. Yesterday was a mixed bag depending mostly on where you were. The morning at home was mostly light drizzle, but in the afternoon northwest of Houston, it stormed. Hail the size of grapes, and pouring rain. It chased me home and then petered out.

I spent the morning doing auction stuff, and the afternoon taking care of my client. That meant buying a replacement TV, and swapping it and another for two bad ones. The TCL 55 inch 4k TVs we decide to take a chance on have not held up well. They develop vertical and horizontal lines in the image and need to be replaced. Takes a couple of years, but all but one have failed, and I’m sure it will fail too. They were exceptionally cheap, and we bought the extended warranty from costco. It used to be provided by SquareTrade, but this newest one is provided by Allstate. The warranty process isn’t odious, and we’ve gotten a Costco gift card for the purchase price on the ones we’ve done so far.

Given that my time costs money, and the customer has to live with a failing TV for some period of time, I ended up buying Sony this time. We’ve shifted from the cheapest TVs to Sony Bravia, at more than double what a Roku or Hisense TV would cost, and about a third more than the Samsung or LG equivalents. The Bravia does have an exceptionally nice picture, and we’re hoping that because it’s not so cheap, it’ll do less spying than the Hisense or Roku TVs. It’s powered by google so still potential to spy. I don’t put them on the network, but someone in the household might at a later date. I also decline about 6 pages of stuff when I set them up. Of course I’m hoping that the Sony name still means something and that they haven’t been built to quite such a ‘value engineered’ standard as the Hisense… it would be nice to get a few more years of life out of them without issues than we’ve gotten from the TCL models.

If you don’t mind paying for the extended warranty, and replacing the TV after a couple of years, or that the TVs want to spy on you to subsidize the cost, there are some great looking TVs at crazy cheap prices. A 55″ Roku 4K TV was $289 at costco, and it wasn’t the cheapest on the shelf. For anything with a good brand name, or newer (bigger) sizes, inflation has been in full effect, with a roughly 30% increase in cost over the last time I priced TVs, which was about a year ago, iirc.

All you need to do is trade away a little piece of your privacy, and you can save some money while self medicating with the boob tube…

Today I’ll be doing some auction pickups, and maybe some other stuff like visiting my buddy at his gub store. We’ll see how the day goes, what the weather ends up being like, and if I hurt or not. This weather makes everything ache.

I’m thinking about heading to the BOL this weekend to do some of the stuff I didn’t do last week, and to weed the garden. We’ve got 18 potato mounds sprouted, the radishes and turnips might be ready to thin, and we’ll have to see how the peas are doing. My buddy says if they don’t start growing better, he’ll replant with a different variety. I could start another couple of rows of radishes, turnips, or beets, as you can keep planting them for a staggered harvest.

The grass probably needs cutting too.

D1 has GS camp, and D2 has a thing with friends, so I think I’d be alone at the BOL. Or I could stay home and work the list here. It’s a big list and needs to be started. Choices. Priorities. Gah.

Easier (but less effective) to just keep stacking. Don’t do what I’ve done, and just stack. Stay on top of the other things too. AND stack.

Mon. Mar. 18, 2024 – oh I love to eat it every day, and if you ask me why I’ll say…..

Home in Houston, and it is more grey on the way. Got a smattering of drops yesterday, after the huge storm blew through around 5am… but we even had some sun too. In any case it dried out enough I could mow. Mostly dried out…

And by mostly I mean ‘not really’ but I cut the hill on an angle, so I didn’t need the brakes as much, and I only spun the wheels a few times when turning back up hill…. the grass came out in lumpy chunks. In the end, the lawn looked pretty good short, and it should stay ok looking for a while.

I also did a bunch of sprinkler work. I ran hoses and put up “impact” sprinkler heads. I dug up the yard where water was coming from the ground and fixed a pipe. Then I fixed another place on the pipe, and tightened two other joints on the pipe… I didn’t quite get all the areas I wanted to get covered, but I’ll tune it next visit.

Took a while to get cleaned up, put stuff away, and prep the house for some alone time.

I finally got home about 1030pm. Didn’t see many wrecks or pulled over vehicles, did see a lot of cops on the road. Maybe they were effective preventing the drunk driving extravaganza this year.

—————
Spring Break is over for my kids and we’re back to school today. Early to rise…

—————
I’ve got auction stuff to do today, and some follow up from the hamfest. I promised two guys I’d look for stuff in my storage, and both called me to see if I looked yet. I better look. Then I have at least one pickup locally. Three more pickups later in the week too. I won some good stuff, and at rock bottom prices. Dunno what happened to the other bidders, or maybe I just want stuff no one else wants.

Either way, I have a bunch of small stuff to get.

—————
I’d like to drop off some stuff too, but we’ll see if he has room for it. And the normal chores have piled up while I was gone. Gonna be busy for a couple of days.

Stack something for yourself, and something for your loved ones. You’ll feel very satisfied when you don’t have to shop at the last minute for that special something…

And you’ll be glad you stacked when you open the beans to go with the road kill stew…

Sun. Mar. 17, 2024 – St. Paddy’s Day… or as we used to call it “amateur hour”…

Possibly rain all day here at the BOL, with moderated temps. It was grey with occasional drizzle most of yesterday with temps in the mid 60s F.

I worked anyway. It’s just a little moisture from the sky. I did spend the morning doing auction catch up stuff. Starlink doesn’t love the rain. And latency is an issue for me. The auction site, hibid.com has an incredibly bad website, that seems to have lots of problems with slow connection timeouts, and with high latency connections. It was nearly unusable last night with latencies around 40ms. They seem to be using a strategy of loading the whole page, then unmasking parts of it, and it suxxx. Even on my fiber connection at home it sometimes sux. It was unusable on 4G lte. With starlink and my older lappy, it’s maddening. If it doesn’t load immediately, the best strategy is hitting reload until it does. Waiting for the pieces to load, especially if there is some sort of race condition error, is crazy making.

Hot Skilzz- they don’t got um.

I did finally get out of the house and I worked on the pump and sprinklers. Got the pump primed, got the inlet out of the silt, and viola! water spewing forth… a mighty gusher…

Continued running hoses and setting up the sprinklers. They are not actually called “chucka chucka chucka” things, apparently they are called “impact” sprinklers. Who knew? Each hose run will only supply 3 heads, but the pump will fire all of them at the same time. I may double some of the zone connections to keep the back pressure down, and cut my watering time in half. The lesson is that I will use big trunk lines when I bury pipe, and then 1″ branches. The pump is clearly oversized, but it is also pushing water up 30+ feet of elevation. Better to have more than I need, I think.

Today I’ll do more sprinkler setup, and maybe a thing or two indoors. If it’s dry, I’ll wait as long as I can and then try mowing before I leave. I don’t want to have the next week or two of growth start from the point it’s at now, or I’ll need a scythe to cut it and some kids to stack the sheaves.

At some point, I’ll close up the house and head home. It hasn’t been the most productive week, but it was a nice break for me 😉

One other thing I’ve learned having the computer set up and actually using it- I need to find a good chair and set up a workspace for my bride, or she’ll be crippled up like me…

Take care of the folks around you and plan for the future. That’s prepping in a nutshell. Oh, and STACK what your plan calls for, of course.

Sat. Mar. 16, 2024 – sometimes, you just soldier on

Wet. Cool or warm, but probably wet. Yesterday started with an inch of rain and thunderstorms. The day cleared with occasional short spatters of rain, but ended with a beautiful sunset, and a pleasant night. Today might get rain, might get lots of rain, or might not. I’m hoping ‘not’.

I didn’t get a lot done, but I did finish one repair. Got the sprinkler pump connected to the piping. The local hardware store didn’t have the exact replacement fittings, but I was able to make a combination that got the job done. I wasn’t the only one standing in front of the limited stock holding pieces up and trying combinations…

Since I was chatting with my fisherman buddy, and working on the dock anyway, I decided to work on a low priority but also low involvement project- fixing one of the propane patio heaters. SHOULD have been straightforward. The gas pipe that goes between the tank and the burner assembly rusted through at the tank end. Yes, the chinese made all the rest of the commercial grade product from stainless steel, brass, and copper, but chose to make the one crucial tube out of steel. Fuskers. I figured to replace the pipe with a hose. Simple fix. Except that out of 20 pounds of gas fittings, I don’t have the miniature one they used at the top of the pipe. So there is a box of parts waiting for next time.

I mention it because that sort of design cheapness really chaps my nether regions. The pipe could have been a rust resistant metal like all the other pipes in the heater. Or it could have been a stock or semi-stock hose assembly. But they chose to make a custom part, and made it from inferior materials. It’s very far from a “green” or renewable approach, and probably didn’t even make economic sense compared to a stock part. And it failed, rendering the entire multi hundred dollar device unusable. I’ll fix it, because I like fixing stuff, but it should have lasted for years longer.

Oh, and there was ONE steel screw in the whole heater too, and of course it was rusted solid. Quittin’ time in Shenzen, ‘just get it out the door’ mentality.

In the plus column for me, while I was poking at the heater, my buddy was fishing, and giving me a lesson on baits and hooks. Staying on the dock so I could chat with him was a big part of my decision to spend time on a low priority task.

It’s also an example of how even if you buy quality (and it’s a very heavy duty commercial grade patio heater) you aren’t guaranteed long service life or repairability.

It’s Spring, time for spring cleaning and all the start of the season maintenance tasks. Take a good look at your stuff and make sure it’s in good repair. If not, fix it, or make sure you have access to the parts you’ll need. Or plan to do without if it breaks. That’s why “two is one, and one is none.”

Stack some backups.

Fri. Mar. 15, 2024 – supposed to rain, but…

Warm and moist. Overcast with a chance of thunderstorms. That’s what they said for yesterday too, and we got only a few little sprinkles. The garden could use some rain, but I’ve got stuff to do outside. Hope it doesn’t pour down.

But if it does, I’ve still got stuff to do.

Spent yesterday piddling around. Back flared up a bit, so I didn’t want to aggravate that and lose any more time. Cleaned and organized while looking for stuff I needed. Put stuff away on shelves, cleared up some boxes of random stuff. Did do a little on the sprinklers, but didn’t get anything finished.

Got my little fire and radio time last night. It’s the part of being up here I love the most. Quiet. Fish splashing. Hard to reconcile having the radio on with the idea of quiet, but maybe “stillness” is a better word. I think we all need a bit of quiet in our lives right now. We need time with ourselves, still, quiet, contemplative time. I’ve seen the idea in several other places recently so the zeitgeist is saying the same thing. Stack up a little quiet and space for yourself in your day or your week.

Today, if it’s not raining, I’ll do more work on the sprinklers, something with the trees, and maybe something with the dock. Depends on how I feel, how hot it is, and how things go. If it’s raining, I’ll probably sleep in, and do some indoor stuff. Maybe play pool with my fisherman buddy. He grew up with a pool table in his bedroom, but hasn’t played in a long time, so I might have a chance… or I’ll get my butt kicked. Should still be fun.

Time feels short, but it’s hard to keep up the pace all the time. Stack while you can, but live too.

Thur. Mar. 14, 2024 – birthday of a good friend, who I’m estranged from

Warm and moist at the BOL today, maybe even stormy. Or it could be we end up missing it all. Sometimes the stuff swirls right past us here. Weather prediction seems to be one of two jobs where you can be wrong every day and people will still keep asking for your opinion. Stock picker/financial pundit being the other…

Yesterday started grey and warm, but cleared later. I even ran the A/C in the evening to cool the house and dry it out. Humidity was more uncomfortable than the heat. We’ve managed with screens and fans so far this week, but I like it a bit dryer.

I did get a couple of things done. I put the trim around the entry door, added a deadbolt, and that project would be done if I could have installed the threshold. Couldn’t find the right fasteners, which I KNOW I have somewhere. I’ll look one last place today, then install it anyway with some less appropriate screws. Gotta make due if you want to make progress, when a hardware store run is a 2 hours round trip. Being well stacked helps minimize that of course. Being able to FIND what you stacked, priceless.

I started laying out this year’s temporary sprinkler system. There was a bit more freeze damage than I thought. One of the hose connections split. I didn’t think to drain them, I just disconnected them from the feed. There must have been a loop trapping some water. I found another spot where the splice in the 1 1/2″ “trunk” line popped apart too. There might be more when I reconnect the pump and fire it up. I’ll continue working on that today if it’s not raining.

I did some sorting and organizing and putting away too. There will be a lot more of that today if it’s stormy.

I can find something to do, I’m sure.

Post title refers to my best friend from high school and college. I got caught in the middle of his marriage drama and lost him, and his wife, as good friends. It’s been a couple decades, and I’ve reached out several times (they resolved their differences and have a son together and are still married). They have not resolved their issues with me, much to my regret.

Stacking doesn’t replace friendship, and new relationships don’t heal the broken ones, but life goes on.

Get out in your neighborhood and meet some people. Inventory your existing relationships and spend some time on maintaining them. Stuff will be very helpful, but the right people will be critical for what’s coming.

Stack the right kind of friends.

Wed. Mar. 13, 2024 – was nice yesterday, hoping for more of the same

Cool and partly cloudy, with a chance of rain later, but who really knows? Yesterday started a bit warmer, got to be very nice, and stayed warm until about 1 am. Then the wind which was gusting and variable got a chill to it.

I started the day by finishing up the starlink install. I dressed the cable and ran it into the house. We put the base station on a little shelf in the main part of the house. I’ll move it to an equipment closet later, when I put the rest of the stuff in place. Works good enough where it is, and is out of the way. It’s all planes and angles, like the cybertruck, and each piece runs hot to the touch.

I spent the rest of the afternoon installing the door between the garage and the house. It was just 1/8 th inch too big, but that made the job a lot harder. While I was there anyway, I added a bunch of reinforcement to the jamb. Got it installed and tuned up, but need to get the threshold and trim back in place.

Had a nice dinner, played several games, and had a fire on the dock to end the day. Not much activity on the bands, and the sky was black but mostly cloudy, so we just enjoyed roasting some Peeps ™ over the fire.

Wife, kids, dog, and inlaws head home later today. I’ll be here for a while working the list. I’ll admit that I miss the quiet time when the house is full. Which is dumb, because the whole point of how I’ve organized my life is to be with the kids and family. Adding the inlaws changes the dynamic and it’s a lot more noisy and a lot less fun.

I’ll be finishing the door, and working on the list for the rest of today. Which things get addressed depends on my mood, and the weather.

Always be working to improve your situation, and stack. Whatever you need, stack it.

Tues. Mar. 12, 2024 – not the 13th…

Cold and wet to start, chance of rain later. Hopefully warming up too. It was nice yesterday, getting too hot for long sleeves and long pants. I was pouring sweat while tending the burn pile.

I got a bunch of things started, but nothing done. Today I’ll wrap up several of the projects, hopefully. I’ll certainly start some too.

Springtime chores were not even on my list but have to be addressed. Stuff like clearing debris from planting beds while everything is still dead will be much harder if I wait. There are a bunch of things that need pruning too. And the normal everyday maintenance like painting and cleaning should be happening… but might not this trip. There’s always something. And always something more when that’s done.

I took the time out to chat with several of my neighbors anyway. Meatspace is IMPORTANT. I got more comments about working hard from a guy I have barely met, which is gratifying. People are watching and forming opinions. I’m working hard to make them good ones. My wife has been more in contact with a different group of people up here, so I’m hoping were covering all the bases. So far, all the guys I’ve talked to have been very like minded, but then this is Trump country, and a country boy will survive.

The inlaws are hopeless though. Grandma blamed Trump for not building the wall, FFS. Hinted that the girls need to get out of Texas for college “so they’re not indoctrinated”. And she’s pushing her nonsense diet advice “you need more carbs for energy” on the girls. When pressed last night she did the typical thing of first blaming Trump, then jumping to another issue when I refuted anything. Grampa just keeps his mouth shut now. He must see it, but can’t admit it. They are born and bred, east coast kennedy liberals.

I’m trying mightily to maintain my civility, but it’s a good thing they are going home mid week.

If it’s not raining today, I’ll keep working on stuff. Always keep improving. At least try.

And stack of course, that can’t hurt.

Mon. Mar. 11, 2024 – live via satellite… not just for sports anymore

Cool and clear. Yesterday ended up being cool to start, warm in the afternoon, and cold at the end. Today should be similar.

I had a leisurely morning, but worked hard on the grounds all afternoon. Grass/clover/weeds grew enough I had to mow on the highest setting and in most places I could only cut half the width of the mower deck without bogging down. So that took twice as long as usual. I also cut about a third of the common area. The neighbor on the other side cut the other 2/3.

That was followed up with trimming and blowing the debris off of hard surfaces.

When I finally got done, I had a bit of daylight left so I went to see the progress in my shared garden. Stuff was sprouting! Far better result so far than pretty much any gardening I’ve done on my own. With the 1″ of rain a couple of days ago, it was well watered and the plants were putting that to good use. Now, if we can keep the deer from eating it, maybe we’ll get some veg in a few weeks.

Dinner was a pot roast in the slow cooker. Small potatoes, celery, onion, and turnips made a very nice sauce. I used the McCormick packets for seasoning, and I like them better than what I was using. I’ll have to stack some more.

Played a card game with the kids and in-laws, and then had a small fire down on the dock. It as pretty dang cold by then, so I didn’t stay too long past midnight. Shortwave doesn’t have a lot of general interest stuff Sunday night, but I heard New Zealand on 17.500mhz pretty well. Florida was only moderately loud.

There was a woman talking about central bank digital currencies on the same frequency that carries Alex Jones and she had some very interesting stuff to say, based on press releases and other battlespace prep that TPTB have been releasing for the past year. It’s more control and more tracking, and it’s probably coming sooner than we think. I missed her name, but she has a substack. I’ll try to find her later and see if the talk is online somewhere.

Sky was black but there were patchy clouds, so I didn’t see much. No meteors.

One of the other neighbors I don’t see very often was driving around on his side by side, and we had an interesting chat about gardens, and prepping. He’s in Houston most of the time, and considers this his BOL. He was headed to his deer lease to see if he could get some hogs. I mentioned I had freezer space and a bone saw. We’ll see if any pig comes my way. It would be nice to get some, and put the smoker to good use.

FWIW, he thinks the lake would only feed about half the people on it. He hadn’t thought about how many of those people are dependent on insulin and other drugs that would stop flowing in a real collapse, and what that would mean wrt the number of mouths to feed. It’ll be interesting to see if he gives it more thought the next time I see him. It was also interesting that he commented about how much work I was doing, and how hard I was working at it. People do pay attention, and they are making judgements. Hopefully, I’m making the right impression. Being seen as a hard worker can’t be a bad thing.

Today will be more work, stuff that I didn’t get to with all the lawn care yesterday. Family is headed into town to see what there is to see on a Monday, when there isn’t a Christmas festival going on. I’m betting on “not much”.

Stack. Make connections to a community, whatever that means for your area and your life. I’m as convinced as ever that where you are, and who you are with, is going to be critical for whatever comes…

Sun. Mar. 10, 2024 – work, work, work, fish, work

Cold and dreary? Maybe cold and clear. Probably cold though. It was chilly in Houston yesterday, I changed from shorts to long pants before I left the house.

Had a good hobby meeting. My website design and work was approved as was my plan to continue. So there’s no dodging it now. I’m learning stuff, which is good, but it’s another project and a time sink at that.

Picked up my wind generator on the way to the BOL, and I’ll at least take a look in the box today. It’s not huge, but I don’t know the wattage yet. Looks like it was designed for a boat…

I’ve got a list of projects, as usual. It’ll be pick and choose based on weather, mood, and timing. And if I got all the parts together. Setting up starlink should be at least a little bit interesting.

We’ve got the in-laws up for the first half of the week, so that will add a layer of complexity and angst. Good for the kids though, in small doses.

And apparently the garden has sprouted. So I’ll probably do some weeding over the week. And I might get some seeds in the ground in my plot too. We’ll see. Meanwhile I brought up more meat for the freezers, and two cans of freeze dried for the shelf. My thumbs are not green. So I stack.

So how does your garden grow? If not, better add some canned veg to your stacks.
