Thur. Dec. 11, 2025 – countdown to Christmas continues

Cool and clear, sunny and warmer later. Nice, for cooler values of nice. Yesterday was very comfortable from about 10am to 6pm. Too cool before and after. Today and tomorrow should be the same.

I didn’t do a run from storage to my shop, but I did get a bunch of domestic bliss done. I cut my hair, washed and folded laundry. Cleaned some stuff up. Got out some more Christmas decorations.

I’ve been cutting my hair since the wuflu lockdowns, but I dropped my clippers and they haven’t been the same since. The last couple of times were very slow, and the result wasn’t up to previous times. My backup clippers were at the BOL, so I had a chance to bring them home this week. What a difference. Wahl Pro are smooth and quiet compared to the cheaper Wahl clippers. Don’t know why I kept the basic ones here and put the nice ones in the closet at the BOL, but they won’t be going back there. I have another set of basic clippers there anyway.

Clipper cuts might not be your choice, but having specialist tools for the specialist jobs makes them easier. At least have a set of good hair cutting scissors and combs. A couple of safety or straight razors and a styptic stick and strop would be a nice deep prep. Nail care tools are essentials too. Remember that infections used to be deadly and could be again. Taking care of fingernails, and especially toenails, is critical for good health.

Even if you usually have someone to do certain things for you, having the tools and some practice doing it yourself is valuable, whether it’s hygiene or auto repair.

Stack the stuff you need to do the common jobs you normally outsource. The day might come where it saves your bacon.

Wed. Dec. 10, 2025 – Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong… all the Louis

Cool, like jazz. But moist, like cake. And clear, if I get my way. Dunno if the universe will feel like it though. It got into the 60sF yesterday and I took off my jacket and overshirt when I started sweating… but only in the sun. Shaded areas were still cold.

I did auction stuff in the morning, then a pickup in the afternoon. I took one load of stuff from storage to shop, but I’ve got a half dozen more to do, and nowhere in the shop to put the stuff. I have been just dumping stuff in, but will need to organize it a bit better to make room for the rest of it. Crazy.

Took the truck to the mechanic but he begged off until Thursday afternoon. He had some emergency work to do on two cars and his bays were full. I’m ok, it’s running and driving ok. I can wait.

When I got home I put out some more decorations.

Today I’ll do more of the same. I can put out some inflatables, and hang some lights. I can also move the stuff at the shop, and take another load there. It would be nice to get my shopping done for the non-prepping hobby potluck, and get my white elephant gifts wrapped too. Kids both have other commitments so it’s just me and the wife. They kids usually enjoy the dinner and gifts. The guys look forward to seeing them, as they’ve grown up attending, and they work the yearly show with me.

Oh, well, time passes and kids grow.

And stacks age out, so go through your stuff and start replacing the breakage. The good stuff isn’t gonna stack itself.

Tues. Dec. 9, 2025 – ain’t nobody here but us … fluffy butts…

Cool and clear, warming later. I hope. It was nice at the BOL this morning, a bit chilly but the sun was beating down. I was sweating while hanging Christmas lights. I’m hoping for similar here in Houston today.

Got up reasonably early. Did stuff. Little stuff, but mostly stuff that needed to be done. The extra Christmas lights on the dock went up when the mower didn’t start… no idea why, no time to troubleshoot or recharge the battery. Eventually drove home and did the thing I needed to do here.

Today I’m taking the truck in for a look-see at the drive line and rear end. I noticed a small visible wobble, really small, in the rear wheel that was hit, and there is a slight pull to the right. Getting it checked out is probably prudent.

Before that though, I’ve got a pickup to do, or maybe more than one, and some stuff that needs to be moved to the shop. I’ll have to leave the truck at the repair shop overnight, so I need to do some stuff today.

Other than that it is another normal day here at Casa de Nick.

Stack!

Mon. Dec. 8, 2025 – still at the BOL, headed home later today

Cool and wet, but the forecast calls for clear sky. We’ll see about that. It never cleared yesterday, and the breeze was chilly when the bright overcast was less bright. I think we’ll get the same today. Maybe mid 60sF.

I had a leisurely day yesterday but did get a lot of small things done. The biggest thing was getting the Christmas stuff up, which might not sound important, but demonstrates that we are here and consider this place important, and treat it like a home. I did get a chance to catch up with my fisherman buddy. He’s been tired and run down, the followup to the chemo is kicking his @ss. They’re gonna pause that for a month and let him get caught up. I haven’t been up in a while so it was good to see him.

Today I’ll do some more small things, maybe even mow the lawn. It looks ok but would look better mowed. I’ve still got lots to sort and put away.

And I’m making a list of stuff that I somehow missed, like jelly for toast. Time to bulk up the TP stash too. Too many women in this house this year…

Stack stuff, but don’t forget to stack some good times and to maintain real life relationships. The holidays are a perfect excuse to touch base with someone you might have not talked to in a while. These are the good ol days.

Sun. Dec. 7, 2025 – A day that lives in infamy, and as an example of stunningly bad judgement.

Cool and damp. Starting in the 50sF and warming, only to end up back in the chilly and damp area. If we get clear sky and sun, it will be great though, like yesterday.

I arose late, got a big (for me) breakfast and enjoyed my coffee and chatting with my wife. When I finally got around to working, I banged out a couple of quick little things, then got started unloading and sorting, as well as converting the garage from cooling to heating. I got most of that done, and decided to get some Christmas decorations out. We didn’t get to the tree, but maybe that was because I fell asleep after dinner for a while.

Today I’ll finish the decorations, do more sorting and putting away, and whatever else I can do without starting a big project. I’ve have decided to stay until Monday afternoon, mainly because I like it up here and haven’t been up in a while. Too many little things are piling up. Of course the same is true at home.

I’ll play it by ear.

And I’m making a list of things to add to the stacks here. I can’t believe I don’t have jelly and jam for toast, except one jar…

Stack. Check. Re-stack…

Sat. Dec. 6, 2025 – Lists, I’ve got ’em. Plans too.

Cold, damp, but maybe just overcast and not raining. That is the hope anyway. Plenty of overcast and misty damp yesterday, although no actual rain on my windshield.

I did my pickups, and stopped by my auctioneer. No date for when I can get more stuff listed. Got some stuff for the house, and some stuff for the BOL. Loaded up the truck and eventually got to the lake.

Today I’ll sleep in a bit, then start on one of the lists. Probably I’ll start with getting the heat set up in the garage and down on the dock. Then moving, sorting, unpacking, etc. Maybe some electrical in the attic? Or something else. No idea which will move to the top of the list of need and motivation. Something will though.

Something always does. Even if it’s just “I hurt so I’m not doing much.”

Stacking is so much easier.

Fri. Dec. 5, 2025 – time flies when you’re havin’ fun

Cold again, and probably overcast too. Maybe even some misty moisture from the sky, because that’s how yesterday ended up. I expect more of the same.

I did my pickups and chatted with a couple of my auction guys. The generator I picked up is worn but they are usually straightforward to fix. More than once it’s just been low oil cutoff that was the problem. The guys are amazed that new players keep joining the auction resale business. It’s tough, even for established players. New guys don’t stand a chance in this environment.

Hope springs eternal and reselling looks like easy money from the outside. We’ll see if they learn as they go and make the changes they need to make. I doubt it, based on what I’ve seen over the last few years.

I got a couple of decorations out last night, before full dark. I’ll try to get a few more out today, but my main goal will be pickups, and if the rain holds off, loading the truck for a trip to the BOL. I scored a couple of auto darkening welding helmets for $5 each from one of the new auctions. One was a Harbor Freight model, but the other was Lincoln Electric (ie. real welding company). They tried to not include them on the invoice, but I called them on it. They sent a new invoice with the helmets included, and the oscillating tool that they also took off the original invoice.

Sometimes stuff doesn’t sell for what it should, especially for a new auction house. That’s how auctions work. It could have been a mistake, but that’s a whole lot less likely than they just didn’t want to give it away. Sorry but the business doesn’t work that way. It will be interesting to talk with them today and see where their heads are at.

If the weather is good, we might head to the BOL tonight. If not, then tomorrow. I haven’t been up in too long, and I’d like to get the Christmas decorations and lights set up there too. It looks good to be part of the community, and it lets us have two trees. The tree at the lake is entirely decorated with glass ornaments that we don’t have an emotional attachment to. The one at home has all our fun and precious ornaments.

Taking the time to build the memories and find joy is important.

It’s just as important as stacking up stuff.

Thur. Dec. 4, 2025 – and the beat goes on

Raining or not, it’ll be chilly. It was raining when I went to bed. I really hope it dries out today, I’ve got a ton of stuff to move around with the pickup truck. Yesterday stayed grey all nay, with a bit of mist later in the afternoon. It didn’t get much into the 60sF without the sun, and was mid 50sF for most of the day and night.

I did several pickups yesterday, and did a bunch more moving, cleaning, and organizing at home. It’s slow going but it is going. Even something like unboxing the 3d printer and putting it in place doesn’t seem like much, but it means getting the box off the floor, and unlocking the potential of having the dang thing in the first place. No point in spending the money and never using it. Plus, if it was set up, and I was even a little familiar with designing a part and then printing it, I’d have been able to print a mounting plate for the cam I hung last week.

The original metal mounting plate got separated from the cam and disappeared. I ended up drilling holes in the cam body and running screws directly through it and into the house soffit. Not ideal for a couple of reasons. Printing a plate probably wouldn’t have taken as long as figuring out where to drill, getting set up, and actually drilling into the camera. AND it wouldn’t have risked the guts of the camera. Custom one-off manufacturing is the perfect use for a 3d printer.

Anyhow, today I’ll do a couple of pickups, mainly the inverter generator, and at least one run to my shop. You’ll notice I didn’t get the truck to the mechanic yet… that’s still on the list but since it seems to be running and driving fine, it’s farther down.

Work avoidance, I’m a past master.

Stack something, or do something, or learn something. Or embrace the power of ‘and’…

Wed. Dec. 3, 2025 – more stuff to do, less time to do it.

Cold again. Mid 40sF and not getting much warmer during the day. Add in grey sky and possible rain, and today could be cold and teh sux. Yesterday was a clear, sunny day, and with long pants and long sleeves, I got by without a jacket for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Probably won’t be that way today.

I did my pickups, after some computer stuff in the morning. I’ve got more to do today. I also hit the HEB for some veg. I did get 10 pounds of pork shoulder for carnitas and pulled pork. Beef is crazy expensive. Choice tenderloin steaks (filet mignon) were $23/pound. Hamburger was $5.50 for 73/27. Other than the shoulder, I am eating meat out of the freezers.

Today I’ve got stuff to do around the house, of course. I’ve got a choice of doing a couple of pickups too. I don’t want to forget about the generator I need to make a special trip to get either. W was thinking of going to the BOL this weekend so I might finally get some stuff out of the house and my shop. It would be nice to have the room ready for the tree tonight…

We’ll see what we get to and what gets done. There’s always something. Stack.

Tues. Dec. 2, 2025 – stuff to do, will I?

Cold again. It never got warmer yesterday. It stayed within a degree of 44F all day. The precipitation did change, going to very light mist in the afternoon. Chill and wet. Fun times.

I did mostly small things around the house as I couldn’t use the truck for anything in the rain. Cleaning and sorting is a never ending job.

As part of that I sorted some of the various pouches of seasoning I have in the cabinet. I couldn’t find any of my stewed chicken slow cooker sauce. I had already thawed and put the chicken in the cooker, so I had to find something. Settled on some mexican flavoring, which ended up being pretty good and will probably go into the dinner rotation. I did throw out about 10 pouches of stuff that were hard inside or old. I suspect that someone else may have thrown out the pouches I was looking for…

Anyway, today we are supposed to be clear, so I’ve got some pickups to do and maybe some shopping. And I’ll be moving more stuff because we need to get the room clear for the Christmas tree. Part of the stuff in the room is waiting to go to the BOL, and wouldn’t be there if we’d gone the last couple of times we were supposed to go. Ah well. Next time.

There is always something that needs to be done, and always new things added to the list. Swapping out the DVD drive on my main pc means more office cleaning… and that means having somewhere to put stuff while I clean, and somewhere to put it when I’m done. A whole stack of tasks to do one simple thing… but that’s the way it is.

We’ll see when I get to that.

Meanwhile, if you still need presents, get your shopping done early. Don’t forget, you might need a present for yourself. You deserve it.

Stack what you need.
