I figured she was just calling to let me know their plans for the day before she headed home. If only.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she was calling to let me know that Bonnie had died in the early morning hours. The last we&#8217;d heard, yesterday morning, was that Bonnie had been admitted to the hospital, they&#8217;d put her on IV fluids, and that she had low magnesium\u00a0levels but was otherwise okay. They wanted to keep her in the hospital for a few days to let her regain strength before sending her home.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara said the doctors and nurses were shocked that she&#8217;d died. They expected her to recover, but with an 89-year-old patient, expectations aren&#8217;t always met.<\/p>\n<p>This will be particularly hard for Barbara. I visited Bonnie for half an hour or an hour maybe two or three times a month, when Barbara couldn&#8217;t go for some reason. Barbara visited her several times a week. Bonnie was a nice old lady, of our parents&#8217; generation, so for Barbara it was almost like being able to visit her own mother again.
