The problem was, attempting to connect via Wi-Fi to our D-Link DIR-615 WAP\/router reproducibly crashed the router. Not just the Wi-Fi, you understand, but the whole router. The only fix was to turn off the Kindle and power-reset the router. As it turned out, the fix was easy. The WAP had been set to support 802.11b\/g\/n. Simply turning off the support for 802.11n fixed the problem.
