From Barbara,
It was 44 degrees and windy when I took Colin out at 7:15.
I called the hospital this morning as soon as I got up. The unit nurse was not in Bob’s room but said he was sitting up in a chair. She said he was coughing and breathing deep but fine.

Great news, here’s hoping for continued and rapid improvement.

    That’s very good news.

  4. Dave says:

Thanks for sharing the good news.

  5. Harold says:

So glad to hear of his progress.
    Prayers are being answered.

That said, tell him to hurry up and get his lazy ass back home and on-line.
    Hospital vacations are frowned upon.

  6. Dave says:

I won’t go as far as Harold. I will say that when I was in the hospital for two days, I wanted to go home because the TV viewing options sucked. That, and the best meal while I was in the hospital was the meal I missed. Noodles and Company Mac and Cheese beats hospital food.

  7. Clayton W. says:

The worst thing about hospitals is all the sick people!

  8. DadCooks says:

Thanks a bazzillion @Barbara, more prayers and best wishes coming your and Robert’s way.

Sitting up coughing are very very important at this stage, but probably very uncomfortable. He probably has a “drip” going of the “good stuff”. Don’t let him allow the pain to get ahead of him, you cannot catch up.

    Go Dr. Bob!!!

Temps here in Houston are gradually rising. Started this am in the low 70s and now it’s 78F and rising. Partly sunny, and 81%RH. Not bad, but a bit moist.

Took almost 450 pounds of scrap aluminum and transformers to the scrapper yesterday. I haven’t been keeping track, but I think I’m well over a ton for the year. The money isn’t great but it beats paying to dispose of the stuff, and it doesn’t count the parts I keep for sale. I’ve got a bunch more to go thru in my driveway alone. It is one of the downsides of buying in bulk at auctions that I have stuff left over after I get the stuff I want for sale. Still, the hourly rate is much better than minimum, and the stuff has to go anyway…

I swung thru a couple of my favorite thrift stores while running errands. It was one of those days when I didn’t find anything much. There are a lot of those days. I did grab a pair of pants (lightweight, zip off legs, fishing or hiking type- which I like to keep in the trucks), and two books. Wilderness Medical Society Practice Guidelines, and a cookbook.

    https://www.amazon.com/Wilderness-Medical-Practice-Guidelines-Emergency/dp/0762741023

Which is a recommended text for prepper medical reference.

The cookbook was written by a Canadian woman on a (mostly) off grid farm. It’s modern, with fairly simple recipes, but I bought it for the chapters on cheesemaking, and cooking on a wood stove. I’ll add it to the reference library.

Coincidentally, there was a woodburning stove for auction in the Houston area. Couldn’t tell how much work it really needs in the photos, but if I had a cabin, I’d of been a bidder. You don’t see them like this often.

Got kid stuff to do today, and more scrapping….

New installations of wood burning stoves, fireplaces, etc. were banned where we lived in WA State and I would see the used ones from time to time on Craigslist.

Unfortunately, Vantucky is a solid three days from Houston, but with the big paper mill shutting down 2/3 of the operations in town next year, there might be enough deal potential to justify the road trip/flight and return U-Haul rental.

Watch the Clark County, WA listings on the Portland Craigslist after the first of the year. Considering how long the mill has been there and the 30+% real unemployment on the WA side of the river, you may see some interesting items posted.

    http://www.chron.com/neighborhood/fortbend/news/article/Sheriff-s-warning-to-F-TRUMP-truck-owner-12360280.php

I have not seen the truck myself but she apparently lives five miles north of me. I see this as sitting squarely on the line between free speech and being a public nuisance. The woman driving this truck is not civil.

Is it too much to ask that we be civil in public ?

This is excellent news ! We were not designed to lay in a bed but to be vertical. That way all of the fluids drain properly.

  14. SteveF says:

No, not at all. Civil discourse and behavior are easily obtained by Trump, Trump voters, and all other Republican racist hater Nazis shutting up and letting the decent people say whatever they want. What’s so hard to understand about this simple rule?

  15. Greg Norton says:

I’m willing to bet that you will see worse in Portland/Vantucky.

I still see “Stand With Wendy” stickers on cars around Austin.

“More than 130,000 people have fled the island since the hurricane, with many seeking jobs and shelter on the U.S. mainland.”

“Prior to Wednesday’s blackout, the power company said 21 municipalities still had no power at all, and portions of Puerto Rico’s 57 other municipalities had seen electricity restored.”

“The island’s power outage was the worst in U.S. history.”

Maintenance is important. Too bad they reputedly don’t do maintenance.

Puerto Rico isn’t part of the US except in narrow, legalistic terms. They don’t have the same culture or work ethic.

  18. Nick Flandrey says:

Hmm, my daily FEMA brief didn’t have any PR or USVI summary…

  20. Mat Lemmings says:

Excellent news to come home to. Keep on the road to recovery, Bob. And the same to you, OFD.

  21. OFD says:

Good news about Witch Doctor Bob! Bettah news when he is given a clean bill of health, goes home, and writes up any lessons learned. I also recommend taking it nice and easy for a while; sit by the fire in a comfortable chair, light up the pipe (maybe), listen to decent music and read. So says Doctor Dave.

Days here just chock-full of activities, and I had to make it known that scheduling me for a full hour of PT at the end of the day pretty much wears me out almost immediately, with not much accomplished. They are jiggering my schedule accordingly. Lots of ideas also for how to work things back at our nearly 200-year-old house built for hobbits, not bloody orcs like us.

I have a long road ahead but am making slow and steady progress each day, and it is well to recall that I got here on an ambulance stretcher after major back surgery where I got carved like a T-Day turkey, just two weeks ago.

I also continue to try to make friends and influence peeps, mainly by just listening to them and showing an interest; one finds out all kinds of neat chit. Discussed war and veteran issues earlier this afternoon with two PTs and just talked about guns and hunting with the RN kid on duty.

Tentative discharge date is probably gonna be 12/2 when wife gets back from Orlando; that gives me some extra days to focus on what I’ll need most going home after more than a month in hospital and acute rehab. PT and OT will continue at home and on an outpatient basis for many moons after that anyway.

I hope I’m functioning well enough for returning to school in January, but if not, I”ll take online classes offered in my department and go back for the intensive weekend courses next summah.

Any word on Mrs. Lemmings, Mat?

And hats off for Barbara and Mrs. OFD taking on characters like RBT and me.

  22. Mat Lemmings says:

“Any word on Mrs. Lemmings, Mat?”

Kind of you to ask, Sir. The morning tests proved inconclusive but with symptoms getting no better (in fact the regional abdominal pain was worse, with a healthy sickness bug now along for the ride), they started to treat for Diverticulitis. Cue arrival of mainline antibiotics (I don’t know what, yet) and stronger opiates to take the edge off.

So poor Ali gets another night in the joint and we look forward to round 3 of the diagnosis game tomorrow. On the plus side, the food’s pretty good in there (North Devon district hospital, Devon, UK) and I get the home bed to myself ;-). The biggest bug bear for this old grouch is the hospital parking costs a bloody fortune, but hey the treatment is free. Long live the NHS!

  23. SteveF says:

Please note that I have refrained from commenting on how Mrs Lemmings followed OFD and RBT into the hospital. I should be commended on my thoughtfulness, discretion, and willpower.

  24. Mat Lemmings says:

    Commendation duly conferred.

  25. MrAtoz says:

Down with Mr. SteveF! Er, again, down with the Klintons!

  26. MrAtoz says:

Glad to see you are recuperating, Old Old Farmer Dave. Hang in there and no more ass over teakettle off the back porch.

  27. SteveF says:

Ya know, if the loose nut — er, peanut — gallery is going to be shouting “Down with SteveF” even when I’m being nice, there’s not really any point to my continuing to be nice.

  28. Vince says:

Glad to hear the good news from Bob and Mr. OFD. Continued prayers and good wishes.

  29. Dave says:

Puerto Rico isn’t part of the US except in narrow, legalistic terms. They don’t have the same culture or work ethic.

The guy I know who went to Puerto Rico after Maria reported that he wound up saying several times to Puerto Ricans that he was here to help because they were real Americans.

  30. Dave says:

Hoping and praying that RBT and OFD continue their recovery. Also hoping and praying Ali will start on the road to health as well.

  31. SteveF says:

he was here to help because they were real Americans.

-shrug- I am not responsible for the delusions of others.

  32. Nick Flandrey says:

But will you accept responsibility for deluding others????

  33. Nick Flandrey says:

This from Barbara on her site:

“he has been in a chair all day. He did wake up when I came in and we talked a little. He has tubes all over the place and is very much out of it mentally. His nurse is very pleased with his progress. They may try to dial back the Impella which I think is at a 7 right now. They had just done a echo when I got there. He is on medicine for his heart but on very little pain medicine or oxygen.”

@Lynn — I put a new WD Black in my primary desktop this week. The noise and heat from this line are still scary to me, especially the wind-down whine when the PC goes to sleep. If you find any drive series you like better, be sure to share.

I have a Barracuda Pro in my home server, but most of the files on the main disk out there are video. Since the server sits in our guest room, the primary concern is noise/heat.

My Intel SSD is very quiet. But you can now get a WD SSD 500 GB for $140. 1 TB SSD for $290.

We are running WD Blacks in the file servers for massive online data storage. They just run day and day out. BTW, never shut them down, they might not start back up.

For a video server, you might want to look at this 8 TB drive for $255.

We are seeing 150 MB/s out of them.

I wonder when the civil war will start ? Or does this forestall the civil war ?
