08:42 – I wasn’t feeling very well yesterday, so I took the afternoon off. Among other things, I decided to watch Supervolcano with Shaun Johnston (Grandpa Jack from Heartland) on Netflix streaming. I was expecting it to be pretty cheesy, but it was surprisingly well done. I’m not a geologist, let alone a volcanologist, but there weren’t any big scientific clangers that I noticed. Unusually for such a film, it looks like they tried hard to get the science right, or at least right enough not to be intrusive.
I’m always amused by people who think they’re preparing for such an event. A VEI 8 or 9? Give me a break. In the first place, the probability of such an event is probably less than 0.00001 in any given year. In the second place, how does one go about preparing for an extinction event? The last such event, about 73,000 years ago, almost wiped out H. sapiens. By some credible estimates, the surviving human population was only a few thousand in Iberian caves. A VEI 8 or 9 occurring today would kill billions of people in the first year after the eruption. Even a VEI 7 event like Tambora 200 years ago would kill hundreds of millions of people from starvation resulting from crop failures.
More science kit stuff today.
That little Repub/RINO clown car is getting pretty crowded now; Huckster Huckabee just announced. I wonder how Carly feels squeezed in among all them fat old carny barkers.
Meanwhile the Dems are marching lockstep with Field Marshal Rodham.
Everyone see where this is going?
Any questions?
I’ve been driving around IA and IL for the last two days. Thingking about swinging by Chicago to pay homage to Obummer.
Off to Sterling, IL in a bit. My wife’s Mom and Pop immigrated there and lived in a box car for 7 years. Five of the family were born there while Pop Castillo worked in the mills.
The “2012” movie has a fairly realistic five minute segment of Yellowstone erupting. Of course, the cause is totally hokie but the result is fairly impressive.

Even if you survive in a cave, I’m not sure what you eat. I wonder how long that you would have to stay in the cave? And how long it would take for the ash to disperse or turn into soil?
I was watching Netflix last night with my daughter. Netflix does have a fairly impressive inventory of movies and shows (we were watching season 2 of “Wolfblood”). But the search mechanism kinda sucks.
“Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista” by Matthew Bracken:
http://www.amazon.com/Domestic-Enemies-Reconquista-Matthew-Bracken/dp/0972831029/
Book number two of a three book series. I thought that this was a POD (print on demand) series but it is not, the book that I purchased is in its sixth printing. The book is a 544 page trade paperback so it is heavy enough to be used as a weapon in the future if needful.
This is a series about a possible dystopian future of the USA due to financial failure of the dollar. The attempt to reboot the dollar has failed and the USA is splintering into various regions. The book is specifically about the California to Texas region which is transitioning into the country of Aztlan.
The author is a fairly heavy handed on shoving things in the readers face but, this is the book for that approach. The reader of this book should not be surprised to see anything presented here.
My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars (417 reviews)
@Lynn,
when the agent is tracking the fugitive by logging into a comprehensive camera network…sounds a little far fetched, no?
Whelp, I just watched NOVA, the Hunt for the Boston Bomber (not exact title), and they extensively profile the camera system in NYC and how it is linked to their “Domain Awareness Center”. ~4000 cameras most of them privately owned accessible and searchable in real time, and back 30 days. This means that the private owners opened their networks, and their DVRs (technically NVRs) to the NYCPD. The system can “show me every red jacket in the last 7 days”, can recognize an abandon bag, and various other spooky things. Go to PBS.org and watch it. Bracken was a friggin’ prophet.

I am totally amazed how Bracken could get so many things right in books published in 2003 and 2006. Social Justice, race riots, electronic surveillance, etc. Of course, he totally missed the fracking renaissance which has rebooted the oil and gas industry in the USA. In fact, I believe that the fracking industry actually saved the USA and saved the dollar (for now). And he believes that the feddies will start to seize guns at some point which I do not think has a prayer of happening.
I must admit that I am fairly unnerved by the Aztlan thing. I do not believe that could happen in central and east Texas. But south and west Texas all the way to California, oh man!
But the search mechanism kinda sucks.
Have you tried http://instantwatcher.com/
@Lynn,
don’t you remember all the “Si Se Puede!” signs around here? That’s a proxy for the number of politically active illegals.
And we have a radio station called “La Raza”– the Race, as in the slogan “La Raza, Rising UP!”
Imagine a country station with that slogan…. nope can’t. The SJWs have won, for the moment.
We better wake up soon. Already the numbers are against us. Too much longer and it will be too late.
If NZ and AUS had any kind of gun rights, I’d have bought my way in before now…

Nope, not out here in the exurbs of the Land of Sugar. I try to stay out of Houston, too much crazy stuff going on over there.
“My wife’s Mom and Pop immigrated there and lived in a box car for 7 years. Five of the family were born there while Pop Castillo worked in the mills.”
Wow. Is Senor Castillo still around? People do what they gotta do.
I read the entire Bracken trilogy and some of his nonfiction essays; “prophet” would be a pretty good term for him at this point, though he’s not 100%; who could be? His timeline may also be a tad off; some of his scenarios are likely to play out within the next five to ten years, tops. Look who we’re gonna have in the WH, taking orders from the actual rulers? The globalist elites’ game plan is all pretty much right on schedule so far.
Just back from minor eye surgery; cancerous lesion removed (biopsy) from lower left eyelid. Now swollen, leaking, and with stitches, which will come out next week. A fine job by the opthamalogist hottie doctor and once again, thanks to my eye doc at the VA, free of charge! Except to the taxpayers, of course, which includes me all these years, plus the eight years of mil-spec servitude.
Next up, hopefully, major dental work/rehab. And meanwhile getting Mrs. OFD taken care of ASAP. She’s in Wichita Falls this week and Stockton, CA, next week. Then she wants at least two or three weeks off.
No Cinco de Mayo for you Gringo…
http://www.mediaite.com/online/pc-police-lose-all-sanity-with-proper-celebration-rules-for-cinco-de-mayo/
I just wish somebody would tell all these neo-Puritan killjoy assholes to go piss up a rope, fuck off and fucking die.
My Irish-American wife and all her clan consider St. Patrick’s Day yet another Amateur Night, like New Year’s Eve. It’s spent at mass and family dinner at home. And we eat Mexican or Tex-Mex cuisine pretty frequently all year anyway, no need for the stupid holiday. I’d say our biggest holiday of the year is Thanksgiving, again, to mass and family dinner.
Those holidays of drinking and carousing all over the place are long gone here.
According to the several 1st generation Hispanics that work with my wife, Cinco de Mayo is really not that big of a deal in Mexico it is just another occasion to get some extra cash out of the Gringos. In fact, around here Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on the Saturday closest to May 5. A festival for the Gringos put on by the local Hispanics dutifully playing their stereotypical roles. I must say though that they have some magnificent horses and silver tack.
Every Tuesday is “Taco Tuesday” at our house so any appearance of us celebrating Cinco de Mayo is just coincidental this year.

Perhaps it’s for CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN. See http://www.amazon.com/Atrocity-Archives-Laundry-Files-Novel/dp/0441016685/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430875851&sr=8-1&keywords=atrocity+archives
Fight conventionality! Make every Wednesday “Taco Tuesday”!
I don’t care for most of Stross’s books (his socialism gets in the way of the plot) but the Laundry Files books are solid gold. Recommended for anyone who likes science fiction with a massive helping of absurdist bureaucracy.
“(his socialism gets in the way of the plot)”
Strike One.
“science fiction”
Strike Two.
“a massive helping of absurdist bureaucracy”
Strike Three!
He’s outta here!
Yes, ladies and germs; the minor league baseball season is soon upon us here; OFD will be attending Vermont Lake Monsters games this summuh. As he attended Paw Sox games down in beeyooteeful Pawtucket, Row-die-lun once upon a time.
And I wish they’d sell friggin’ tacos instead of hot dogs at these places but what can ya do way up here in the north-land?
Huh, getting great DX this am. Currently listening to Australia, 14,300 km on 9.560Mhz.
Pretty clean signal.
DX was pretty good last night too.
Unfortunately, now that the news is over, I have no interest in iraqi folk music….

<Wow. Is Senor Castillo still around? People do what they gotta do.
Mom and Pop Castillo passed many years ago. We visited their grave in Lardeo a couple of times over the years. I never met them.
